A Tale of Two Cities (1935) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #ATaleofTwoCities
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Charles Dickens' tale of love and tumult during the French Revolution comes to the screen in a sumptuous film version by the producer famed for nurturing sprawling literary works: David O. Selznick (David Copperfield, Anna Karenina, Gone with the Wind). Ronald Colman (The Prisoner of Zenda) stars as Sydney Carton - sardonic, dissolute, a wastrel.and destined to redeem himself in an act of courageous sacrifice. "It's a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done," Carton muses at that defining moment. This is far, far better filmmaking too: a Golden Era marvel of uncanny performances top to bottom, eye-filling crowd scenes (the storming of the Bastille, thronged courtrooms, an eerie festival of public execution) and lasting emotional power. Revolution is in the air!
Directed By Jack Conway, Robert Z. Leonard
Starring Ronald Colman, Elizabeth Allan, Edna May Oliver

The Bastille taken splendidly with the populace led by Madame Defarge (Blanche Yurka). Over 100 actresses had been seen for this role but Ms Yurka was determined to get the part which she knew would be career -defining !

It's funny that the opening scene shows people walking barefoot but the narrative written over the action says that "Footsteps are echoing" 🤔

There were approximately 7 prisoners in total in the Bastille....

I think the real prisoners were the people living outside the Bastille. You can be imprisoned more effectively by poverty than by a prison cell. At least one day the cell door may perhaps open but poverty in those days was usually a life sentence from which you couldn't escape.

I think the woman at 1:40 is the same woman who voiced the evil queen in Snow White two years later.

Close! That's Blanche Yurka who played Madame DeFarge. But the woman who voiced the evil queen is in the movie! She played the Vengeance, the large woman who hung out with Madame DeFarge. That actress' name was Lucille Laverne.

Also in this movie is Walter Catlett, AKA Mr. Honest John.

Yes, absolutely. She voiced the evil queen and the old hag. She just took her teeth out for the old hag part. Her voice and cackle are undeniable.

Right, why endure Democrats when we have those saintly Republicans making sure the rich people pay no taxes and poor people never have healthcare or safety net?

@@WillScarlet16 The Swamp is run by Dems and crony capitalists. Yes, includes Repubs. Trump is not Swamp, but a populist. America first, energy independence, jobs back to US, secure borders!

It would be better to ask "Why do we endure _Politicians?"_ --- left wing, right wing --- both part of the same bird.
