Revolution of the Daleks Scene Remake

Remade a scene from this year's Doctor Who special, Revolution of the Daleks, with my own spin on it! The VFX by DNEG in the show were really impressive, especially the aerial shots.
Modelled & animated in Blender 2.91, textured in Substance Painter, rendered in Eevee.

Agreed - I like Segun’s music, but his Dalek theme doesn’t really have the same horror as Gold’s. That music did a lot to help make them feel intimidating.

I like it in isolation but It does feel weirdly sparse for the show, especially in Series 11. He’s gotten a bit more bombastic lately, but seems to be going away from synth stuff at the same time which is a shame! Seems to be going for ambience like you say when Doctor Who really needs music that elevates it.

I don't hate Segun's work (although it is crap according to my parents) but what I *do* hate is his complete disregard of the previous 13 Years worth of musical ideas and identities attached to the show and it's characters. It either shows a complete lack of respect toward Murray Gold's work, a complete lack of skill to replicate Murray Gold's Work, or a massive Ego on the part of Segun. Now, maybe there are legal reasons as to why they cannot use the ideas from Gold (I've heard that Murray technically owns the rights to the ideas and not the BBC), but it's still removing a key part of what made the show as good as it was.

Goodness gracious, that was really, well done! Much more improved and better! And, I really liked that the Squad Enforcer Dalek Leader had a black dome and the every other panel on the skirt section was black. Really, well done! 😃

The alternating black skirt stripe goes back to the saucer commander Dalek in the Dalek invasion of earth in Billy Hartnell day. I always wished the new series had used some visual distinguishers of Daleks rank as the Classic series did.

This is absolutely brilliant, not only are the models so high quality but you've also got the shape right, unlike the BBC in the story, god those CGI Daleks looked out of proportion and yet its up to fans to make for their mistakes, well done!!

Very nice! This is so good! You should do shots of the Daleks fighting, I was so disappointed there was only like 7 seconds of footage in the show of that, a really missed opportunity I think! Btw, were you going to do a video about how you did the Dalek Emperor one?

I'm planning on doing that! 3ddoctorwho has shared their awesome security drone Dalek model with me so I'll be animating that at some point. I have a timelapse of the entire modelling/texturing process of the Emperor that I'll be sharing later, the files are huuuge though so I need to make some room on my hard drive before I can edit it properly!

I think the CG guys must have been given the 5" scale toys for reference. There are some inaccuracies to the model which are pretty much unique to those toys (like the ear lamps being rotated 45 degrees from what they should be)! Really bugged me.

@@BenJewer Yeah, the shape of the dome features like the eye stalk housing where all incorrect in resolution, But dalek inaccuracies go back ages. In the rusty episode they used 12" Character Options daleks for one of the scenes :p

In fairness it bugged me back then too! But it was mainly the stupid looped dome/eye movement of the RC toys that really took me out of it. I can understand using toys as a cost saving measure (and it worked really well when they used the 18” versions), but in CG there really shouldn’t be an excuse for getting them wrong!

How I have I only just seen this, this is incredible especially for Eevee! This is quite ironic as I am attempting to do a similar animation (as I really wanted to learn Blender) of some extra Dalek Battle Scenes. Just wanted to ask, do you have any advice for how to do the lighting and actual animation of the Dalek itself as this and your Dalek Emperor animation is just jaw dropping and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Lighting wise there isn’t a huge amount going on on the technical side, mostly just following basic lighting principles to give contrast and bring out the shape (rim lighting, backlighting etc) & I am still experimenting with the best way to light a Dalek! In terms of animation, a good trick I have learned is to turn on autokeying, press play and then live animate the Dalek. Then smooth the key frames slightly in the graph editor. Super quick to do (though it can take a few attempts) and if you’re subtle with it it makes quite a convincing simulation of someone operating the Dalek from the inside.

This is great work but I do prefer the original, the shot of the Daleks swarming around the TARDIS cannot be matched, but you've made an excellent imitation and the Dalek voice is on point. Maybe tone down the Daleks flexing their claw though, looks like they're thinking about squishing tiddies
