A lot of people are talking about who was to blame in the marriage, but I really think it was a dual doing. Both April and Frank were insecure and unhappy with their lives and took it out on each other. Couples who blame each other for their own internal demons instead of working together to fix the problems almost always end up falling to pieces. I must admit that whilst watching this movie I found myself siding with April, and then with Frank towards the end, but ultimately, the purpose of this film was not to make audience take sides, but give them insight into marriages like this and how they go wrong. I guess it is to show how fragile some relationships can be, and how what may seem perfect on the outside may be fractured and suffering greatly on the inside. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and so am I, so please don't hate me for my comment.

He didn't answer the question though :D I mean, Jesus, the guy has a nice job offer, he is afraid to tell his wife that he wouldn't become a writer anyway, he has no talent, and moving to Paris won't change that fact. I feel sorry for her as well: living in suburbs in 50s, having only one friend of your age, doing housework from dusk till dawn (it's not hard, it's monotone, she has nothing to do except that). She feels trapped and desperate, that's why the whole "let's leave for Paris" tirade has started. Frank and April promised to always tell the truth but for entire movie they either lie to each other or keep silent about how do they really feel about things. There wouldn't be a conflict if they *talked* to each other. If they haven't had children, it would be right to get divorced. But in their case, I think, they should've moved to a bigger city, where Frank would be able to work and April wouldn't going crazy in an empty suburban house with no past time options whatsoever. Leaving for Paris is a radical step, of course. I'm surprised April didn't suggest moving to another planet instead :D

This movie is not for the faint of heart as it really hits at the core of a lot of relationships. You have to put on your big boy/big girl pants for this one. The children are used symbolically in this film (It's not a dippy soap opera, so don't get all weepy "What about the children?!?!" about it.) They represent anchors - either keeping you safely rooted in a port; or weighing you down so you never experience freedom again. Winslet's character is coming to the realization of what she needs to function, but may be hampered by an anxiety disorder or mild depression that she doesn't have under control. De Caprio's character also came to the same realization, but had his faith shaken, and reverted back to the "just keep swimming" mentality. He responds to his wife's desperation with the only thing he knows to do - yell at her, call her crazy, and minimize her concerns. For a brief moment, they were in harmony, then they derailed and couldn't get back on track; or even uncouple their cars and get on different tracks. This is set back in the '50's so the traditional family was valued above all else and you were essentially trapped in it. And like any other animal in a trap, a human will either become delusional just to cope (the husband) or gnaw a limb off to get out (the wife).

The movie is very good, but I really don't like this scene. It pretends that April is a bad mother and Frank is the good guy. The novel by Richard Yates reveals that he doesn't want his children as well. The only reason he convinces her not to abort the third baby is to cancel the plan to go to Paris. It is also told that April never experienced love and attention as a child because her own parents didn't want her and she was taken from relative to relative. No wonder she had problems to embrace her children.

I can watch and listen to Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet act all day. It's so intriguing and intoxicating. 😍😎💯👍😏😩

Even Leo's character doesn't want the child, but in this desire to 'fit in the society rule,' he ignores what they both need as a couple. I know the movie is set in the '50s, but the sad fact is we still do this in various of our relationships. I am not taking sides in this 'relationship' presented. I was talking about the particularly above scene. In any relationship, sometimes, we stretch things to their breaking point instead of letting go gently.

This is the burden of women having children and running a household. Some women are not made for it. And now it's even worse with women in the workforce working just as hard as their partners and still having to maintain the household on their own. April is not in the wrong to feel how she feels.

I relate to Kate's character a lot more after having a kid, however I have to wonder, if it's just about escaping, how different does she think life is really going to be just because they move? You're still gonna have two kids to take care of, that's not gonna change no matter where you live. She also mentioned she would be the one working in pari while frank stayed at home figuring out what he wanted to do with his life. She'll be doing the exact thing she looks down on him for doing which is spending all her time working. How much excitement does she expect to find working all the time? I just find it a lot harder to relate to her character than I do to his. Especially being a single mom. I would love to be married to a good man who takes care of us while I get to stay at home with the kids.

There are many women in long-term relationships who are single parents. Sometimes it's better to be a single parent then one who takes care of all the kids, chores and still gets yelled at to find work on the side, school and maintain looks. Relationships can be a hindrance if you don't find the right man. Frank in this movie was gas lighting her by calling her crazy and forcing her to keep having kids control her and make her not achieve any of her dreams. Once she had 2 kids and they got older she wanted to move in a location that was near her dreams, but he consistently shut it down and belittled her. The perks of being a single mom is you aren't told what to do, cleaning up after a man could, and if you have enough support system you can focus on schooling or achieving a goal without being put down. Finding a man is cool if supportive but you still need go achieve something on the side incase something bad happens to him.

I like both of the actors here and the film overall is amazing but when kate winslet does American accents...I don't think she nails it..she's better when she plays scenes in her english accent! Just imo...☺✌

I agree. I’m sick of her American accents and want to see her act with her own voice. She’s way better.

I'll admit, I first only watched pieces of this movie because I wanted to see Leo and Kate and the pieces I watched I wasn't impressed by. But when I actually sat and watched the whole movie, I liked it. Maybe I was just older and could relate to feeling trapped and making excuses to stay comfortable in life.

😂 not at all! If fighting continues not a single life should be encouraged in this world! Giving a healthy environment will build kids mental health better!
