In a groundbreaking collaboration, intelligent automation specialist Dematic has successfully completed an installation of an innovative automated order fulfilment system for Kesko, Finland's second-largest grocery retailer. The cutting-edge solution is revolutionising the way groceries are handled and delivered at the K-Citymarket Ruoholahti superstore site.
The Dematic system is no ordinary solution; it's the first of its kind in Finland, bringing automation to the heart of a grocery store! It is based on a micro-fulfilment concept and has been strategically located below the store premises. It involves a store picking zone, two picking zones with pallets and shelves for fast-moving goods as well as two AutoStore™ subsystems (one for ambient products and another for chilled items). All of it is seamlessly coordinated by comprehensive warehouse management software.
What's the driving force behind this transformation? The recent global pandemic accelerated the demand for online grocery shopping and Kesko has been at the forefront of meeting this surge. K-Citymarket Ruoholahti, located in a bustling urban location, was selected as the perfect site for the pilot installation. It's among the busiest K Group stores for online grocery orders and the advanced system is anticipated to significantly enhance both online and in-store shopping experiences.
