Wish they would break down cost. I read an article today about MENLO Park police saying their three Teslas ended up too expensive compared to an explorer. 112k per Tesla comparewd to 77k for the Explorer. The article stated 25K for safety outfitting, 7.5k for ballistic panels, 5k for communications equipment. Am curious how these stack up. The article also mentioned difficulties with rear seating for prisoners, and police having trouble with the Automated tesla features such as walk away door lock, light dimming at night in the cabin, and their sidearm hitting the center console. I believe several of these issues have already been identified in this series such as lowering the center console so that's good progress. I think over time the cost would balance out or be significantly cheaper with maintenance...

Really nice work by Upfit on these... I've seen a lot of high speed pursuit videos and it's crazy officers need to keep one hand on radio to report speeds, traffic, heading, etc. Why can't the folks at dispatch or wherever tap into the police cam live and use the vehicle's GPS to track heading, speed, etc. so officers can focus on driving... ?
@cgamiga2 ай бұрын
Great idea... Tesla needs some fleet API/software management for this, if I can track my own Tesla in the app & ABRP/TeslaFi etc down to speed/heading etc, surely PD dispatch can do the same thing?

Thanks once again sandy for showing us very interesting content and very indepth as always but One thing that came to my mind was 1. Have they added more batteries 🔋 to compensate for all that added electronic equipment? 2. How much has all this added equipment had an impacts on Range ? 3. How much is the average cost on conversion? Edit(also the battery degradation after having all that weight added and the strain and stress that will be put on the motors as well as the battery, I feel in just 5 years a loss of 15/20% battery degradation because of the more aggressive use of vehicle aka chases aggressive accelerating and brake and more factors to include)

@realulli but you did just watch the video right ? , the amount of extra equipment added inside the vehicle and then the replacement of plastic to steel bumbers it all adds up so that also will lower the mileage then factor in the extra power consumption which said in video "vehicle left sitting fir a week with every added electronic device on for 1 week consumed 10% so let's try factor this in amour door planes , added many police equipment , plastic bumpers replaced with steel ones I'd say they have lost atleast 100 miles in range and the 0-60 time gained another 1/2 seconds to get to 60 and I wonder how the motors will far up to all this added weight thing is more like near to end of 2 to see if not 3 tons 😐
@alanlight77402 ай бұрын
Just because we see car chases in movies doesn't mean that they are an everyday occurrence for the average police officer - and when they do occur the police can compensate for a lower range by calling in more cars and setting up roadblocks. And it would be more of an issue if these were State Police or even Sheriff's Deputies - but the towns these police cars are going to are only a few miles across. Range simply isn't a huge issue.
@realulli2 ай бұрын
@@GamMngitSssEmoTionaL5953 You were talking about compensating for the electronics, not the added weight and drag from the stuff they bolted on. Anyway, I expect them to have done their homework and know their usage pattern. I also expect the cars to be P spec cars that are mostly limited by the ability to put the power on the ground. Being heavier will cause a slightly higher consumption but only very little penalty in the acceleration numbers. I'd expect police cars to either drive around slowly, patrolling an area, incurring only little issues from drag or sitting still, hiding somewhere trying to catch speeders. When they get into a high speed chase, the point is not to chase the suspect hundreds of miles around the county, the point is to stop him as quickly as possible to minimize risk to innocent bystanders. If they get cars that can match the speed of a fleeing suspect before he is 100 yards down the street, I'm all for it. I also highly doubt they will leave the car sitting around for a week with everything turned on. Actually, with sentry mode active, the car will consume about 30% in 5 days, all on its own, so their electronics are definitely a non-issue.

@Shiftheads2 ай бұрын
This will most certainly pick up steam. How often do you think affluent suburbs are getting into firefight? They also have multiple cars instead of everyone sharing so there is plenty of time to park one car and take another. All it would take is a couple superchargers at the precinct if charging was actually an issue. Think about all the idle time etc. It's not like they are all driving 300 miles a shift. These will end up saving them a lot over the Ford explorers and Durango they have now. Lastly, parts are not hard to get anymore. Tesla has the whole catalog to order from on their site now.
@davidbeppler30322 ай бұрын
Cybertruck is bullet proof from the factory. Not sure where you developed such a poor understanding of police dynamics. An EV can sit for 40 hours with a full charge with AC/Heat on and still have 50% charge. Can recharge in 20 min between shifts. Saves 70% fuel cost per car per month. They pay for themselves in just 3 years.
@ButterfatFarms2 ай бұрын
Range through multiple patrolling shifts... many departments don't share cruisers but assign them to officers. The only one driving them will be themselves on their shift. They take their cruiser home with them. Which is what every cop would prefer when working for a department over sharing some nasty cruiser that the last guy left chicken bones on the floor of, the steering wheel is nasty, and the driver side window greasy from the last guys fro bumping into it all night. 😂 Not that I'm impressed with EV patrol vehicles for many other reasons but that isn't one of them. ICE patrol vehicles won't be going away anytime soon. Cities like Philadelphia have over 5,000 municipal vehicles and even with their plans to adopt cleaner vehicles they only have 250 EVs, and they don't expect to have phased out the purchase of new ICE vehicles until 2030. And that'd be a miracle if Philadelphia city government could stick to a plan like that anyway.
