Great demonstration! I just bought the S&W 686+. Tried all the double action triggers in the store and I thought the Colt had about a 1% better trigger in terms of double action than the S&W and about 80% better than the ruger. But for 1% better trigger it wasn't worth another $500 to me. I'm really happy with the 686.

@@aideningram434 Sure, This was back in 2012. I was working armored car cash deliveries at the time. I was at a customer drop making my way to the door with a large some of cash when a man rushed me from behind firing. He had a Glock 17 9mm (FMJ thankfully) and had both hands fully extended firing as fast as he could pull the trigger. My left hand was on the handtruck and my right was already on the grip of my S&W 686. The first thing I heard was two pops and him yelling "Give me the F###### money! you gonna give me the f##### money!". As I spun around in place the first thing my eyes caught was the muzzle of his gun and again Flash Flash! My eyes carried past the muzzle to the center of his chest and I began to fall away at an angle as I was rotating to try and "get off the X" even though my feet were twisted. As I did I fired three shots on the draw, first from the hip, second at half extension and third at full extension. To be honest I wasn't even aware I was firing until I saw the third shot break. I saw him recoil inwards so I knew I made contact. I hit the wall next to me with my back on the way down and he faceplanted in the concreate right around the corner of the building (door I was going to was right at the corner). I sat up and scanned for any other threats and seeing none immediately did a quick self check for injuries. I had taken one round thru my left hand and one thru my left shoulder near my spine. After a second or two I determined that my left hand was the only thing not working so I got up to make my way back to the safety of the armored truck. As I cut the corner I saw his feet first that were not moving and his arms under him holding his wounds. I covered him the last couple steps back to the truck and let my partner handle the threat from that point while I continued to check for more injuries. Keep in mind this all happened at about 3 feet in under 3 seconds. He fired 7 rounds and I fired 3. All of mine landed in his chest and one must have hit his spine because nothing on him moved below his shoulders. One round had entered his right wrist and gone down his arm blowing out the entire forearm before entering his chest. Trauma Dr. said any of the 3 were fatal wounds. None of my rounds exited his chest. I was loaded with Hornady critical defense. I was fortunate enough to leave the hospital that afternoon. He died on scene. I share this with the hope that it helps somebody. I hope it encourages people to train to the point of reflex. I have permanent nerve damage in my left hand that is a 24/7 reminder. But it still works and there was no major damage on the shoulder so I count myself lucky. Love your friends, Love your family and train for the worst.

I had a Reeves Jungkind-tuned Python set up for double-action-only shooting many years ago. My gun had the Python Royal Blue finish, a six-inch barrel and a bobbed hammer. It was the sweetest-shooting handgun I have ever fired. Despite the fact they didn't have the lock on the ejector rod, Colt revolvers were famous for having the tightest lockup of any double-action revolver. Their frames (which were forged) were also quite robust. An Official Police .38 from the 1960s has no trouble with .38 Special +P loads. I have had a bunch of Smith & Wessons from .22 to .45 and they are great guns and there are still a few in my collection. But I like the Colts.

I've got a speed six in the 3" barrel. Put Hogue rubber grips on it and a bit of spring and trigger work and it becomes a nice shooting, excellent carry gun. Smaller and lighter than the GP-100, and unlike the SP-101 it still holds a full 6 shots of any .357 ammo that you care to run. Rugers are indestructible tanks, but they do need a bit of polishing to really make them shine.

Back when I was one of the boys behind the badge (Sheriff's Deputy) I was lucky enough to have the privilege of carrying anything that I could qualify with! Believe me, I went through a long list making certain that I could switch to whatever I preferred at my own discretion. I spent a lot of time with a 4 inch L-frame, 586 that I went completely through and setup for speed, reliability and FAST reloading. I left single action capability in that gun but bobbed the hammer and used it in D/A mode 98% of the time. I once attended a course through LFI and Mas himself compared his Colt Python action job that cost him $300.00 bucks (1987) to my L-frame which I had tuned myself. Mas was amazed to find that my work was superior to the "name" gunsmith that had done his Python! I considered that about as good a compliment as a mans likely to get..... I used that L-frame for duty, competition and carried it often off duty....always loaded with my personally crafted hand-loads for the work intended and always in .357 Magnum power levels. That load would defeat 12 layers of kevlar in 2 shots and zip right through the steel rim of an old 1976 Ford LTD at 7 yards. I always qualified at Master level with that pistol and my best score was a 597/600. I kind of went on a "ramble" here, but in recalling one of my best d/a revolvers brought back some fond memories..... I've been a fan and sincere admirer of Jerry Miculek from before my LE career and still enjoy watching the "Masters Master" do what he does best! God Bless you and the family Jerry. You, among a few select others played key roles in my life when it came to developing mu shooting skills. The S&W is a masterpiece of weight, handling, function, feel and function ability is superb. The beauty is in the group on the target. The fit and feel and function put that group up there. The trigger is the best going and much easier to get perfect. The Colt is very difficult to get as smooth and as light as the S&W. My S&W Trigger is just fantastic. The trigger is like butter smooth. Lighter than grease and not as sticky. Clean. Smooth. Crisp. The break is less than a piece of glass but totally complete. The return is by far the best going. That is why the S&W is the most beautiful. Even though the Colt looks great. Look at the Colt shoot the S & W

I love Jerry and respect him greatly. I own Smiths and Rugers. Never had a Colt. But this is an infomercial. Comparing tuned S&W's to an obsolete NIB Colt and a small, old short-barreled Ruger is a setup. I'd respect the comparison more if his income wasn't from S&W.
@bcaffrey98
@bcaffrey98 10 жыл бұрын
Of course Jerry is biased. I am too after 40 years of shooting and owning all three brands. He's right about the ease of S&W's to be tinkered with compared to the Colt and Ruger. The S&W action is superior to the others simply because of its simplicity and ability to be easily modified. The problem with most Colts was the way you run the trigger. With an S&W the major effort exists getting the hammer started and turning the cylinder. After that, the trigger pull eases up all the way through release. On the Colt, it was easier to get the hammer & cylinder moving at first, but the trigger "stacked up" and became progressively heavier as you neared the release point. This meant you were exerting more pressure just before the release which could cause some jittering of the sights as muscular effort increased. And the trigger return on Colts was less robust than S&W's due to the design. You could lighten the effort on the Colt only so far but not eliminate it. If you ever handle a Colt and can dry fire it watch how the cylinder locking bolt falls into the cylinder notch only when the hammer is about 1/16" from releasing. That fine timing leaves a small window for "tuning" a Colt. Also, the plow-share styled grip was not really a good shape for combat shooting. Rugers can be tuned up pretty well, but it takes someone with a lot of experience to smooth out the factory-grittiness and give you a buttery smooth trigger. One thing used to be popular on the shooting circuit were "Smolts." A Smith & Wesson frame with a Colt Python barrel. These, as Jerry said, shot the .38 wadcutters better and the Python's bore diameter was a touch tighter (.3561 vs .3568).

Most of us don't plan to shoot very weak .38 specials as fast as our fingers can go, in a defensive situation, with a revolver. No doubt Jerry is an incredible shooter, but I consider the ability of the gun to handle magnum loads important. He is comparing current S&W to 40+ year old Colt and Ruger. That's an infomercial for S&W. The Ruger GP100 has 3 lockup points. I'm not sure if a ball detent should count as a locking point on those newer Smiths?

Thank you Jerry for sharing the differences about the lock up & forcing cones, it really steered me towards S&W & away from the Python, which you have to admit is a beautiful gun, but if you can't shoot it without worrying about the long term durability after spending so much money what's the point.

Here's my two cents, for what it's worth. (Probably a penny.) The first handgun I ever bought was a Colt Python. I thought it was the Cadillac of handguns. Handsome guns indeed. But then someone told me, "The sights are too small". I never realized this until I started shooting Smiths. Yep, the Colt sights are too small. Then another person said, "The Colts only lock-up in one place." Mr. Miculek mentions this fact in this video. So that's another downside to the Colts. Anther *problem* that I had with a Colt Diamondback was light hammer strikes and failures to fire. The problem was a result of the Colt using a "V-shaped leaf spring" in their action. Those V-shaped leaf springs will weaken over time. I could go on and on here, but let me finally say that the bright nickel finish on a handgun makes them very hard to shoot on a bright sunny day; the sun reflects off of the mirror finish - like a mirror...right into your eyes. In summary,..buy yourself a S&W L frame. Then spend the money to have a professional gun smith smooth-up the action, change the springs and further customize the gun. Even if you spend $1,000 on the stock L-frame and another $1,000 on customizing it, it will still be cheaper than a "classic" Python.

The Smith felt much better than the Ruger, Taurus, and of course some other cheaper brands. After owning it for a year, I took it apart and mirror polished all of the internal parts, as well as the inside of the frame where they all sat. It feels amazing now. The stainless steel was very easy to polish. I own many guns, but that 686 is my favorite by far.

My dad bought me my first Ruger Security Six revolver in 1970 and taught me to shoot it. Later I bought a S&W model 686,19, 17, 28, 29, 25 and 60. When it comes to shooting I always have chosen my Rugers over my S&W and I have a number of Rugers. My two favorite Rugers are my GP 100 and my SP101. My Security Six , GP 100 and SP101 have shot lots of rounds with no problems and I like the triggers better than my S&Ws. Never noticed it be slow or without groves. I was disappointed that you didn't put a modern Ruger against your S&W 686. I guess I just don't like to win.

I agree with cathy308308 The ruger speed six/security six and GP100 seem to hold up under long term use with .357 mag better than the S&W revolvers as a general rule. The action on the S&W can be smoothed up the best with the N frame the most smooth of the brand. The Dan Wesson will run with a steady diet of .357 mag the longest and is the easiest to do action work on, it is to bad it was not included in the tests. The DW barrel system with the adjustable gap and dual threads front and rear is usually the most accurate for long range work on steel rams, etc.

Onace it has been sold from a FFL to a person or the like its no longer new regardless of its fired condition. Fact is it could be 13 yrs old and still be NEW. It could have never been shot and not be NEW. its all in the details. I have seen 30-40 yr old guns sell as new old stock as it was never sold by the FFL. The owner kept it in his stock for himself but never transferred it to them. You also have companies that mothball store things to be sold many years later to draw attention for marketing.

@@timw9919 When I first started pistol shooting years ago, my first centre fire was a S&W and I'm not sure of the model now. It was the same as the Mod29, but chambered in 357. Petty heavy thing, but what I couldn't wait to get was a Colt Python ! That was the gun I had to have. Later on when I started doing competitions, I finally managed to acquire one and it turned out to be the biggest disappointment ever. It was hard to get speed loaders, almost impossible to get a good trigger job done and it just wouldn't group. No matter what. I tried every combination of loads imaginable, shot from a ransom rest, and it was bloody hopeless. A mate had one too, and we had a big session together load testing, and HIS wouldn't group either. I couldn't wait to get rid of it. Luckily, there is always someone who wants a cool python. lol I went on to S&W 686's and 8 shot V comps, and in my opinion, there is nothing to compare with S&W for accuracy and reliability,

I like Rugers also, but only have one of their DA's (2.25" SP-101). Always wanted a Speed Six to match my 2.5" M-66, so it was nice to see one. I like the 3" GP as well. The return on Colt triggers has always felt vague and spongy to me, so i never bought one. I wish i could shoot as well as Jerry, but we can all say that☺. My 50 yd groups would probably barely be on the silhouettes, and at 25 my groups would be 2-3x the size of his 50 yard groups! Ah, well. Gives me something to strive for. Great videos

Jerry, your comments are spot-on and mirror my own experience. Having survived the Jurassic age (graduates HS in 73 in the Florida panhandle), I was much enamored with both Colt and S&W revolvers. I favored the 2" Colts for concealed carry because they held one more round than the S&W 36, while remaining smaller than the 2" six-shot S&W Model 10. I also found that in rapid fire shooting the mushy DA trigger pull of a stock Colt was easier to master than the S&W. However, the S&W was easier to manipulate in DA if I wanted to pause and predict where it would break just be firing. This made for slower, but more precise DA shooting (though perhaps not realistic for combat work). These were stock factory guns. When I was able to afford it, I had a well known gunsmith tune three of them, two S&W and a Colt. I learned the hard way that S&W revolvers were easier to tune, and I still own both of them, a 4" Model 19 and a 4" Model 29, with their glass smooth, light actions. The third wheel-gun was a Colt 6" Python. Unfortunately, despite the glassy smooth action, it had timing issues after I got it back from the Smith. I later sold it and all my other Colt revolvers, preferring to stick with a brand for which there are still many aftermarket and spare parts available, not to mention gunsmiths who know how to fit them. I don't regret the decision. Colts are beautiful works of art, but the S&Ws are made for shooting.

there's a video on his channel that shows his record. He didn't break McGiverns record because there is no way to accurately compare times since the timing apparatus was so antiquated for McGivern which he says in that video I think. Anyway, he used an 8 shot S&W for the two 8 shot records (8 on 1 target under 1 sec, 8 on 4 targets in around 1.02 I think) and I think it was a 6 shot S&W for the 6 shot, reload 6 shot record. He's unbelievably fast but it's hard to compare him to McGivern because of the time frame, modern revolvers are so much nicer compared to his although I think McGivern shot S&Ws as well for his records.

Daddy shot competition used a .38 spl colt python or its equivalent back in late fifties. At age 63 he was invited to a police match and won the match! Remember as a kid watching him dry snap training. only S&W we own is a k frame .38 spl target model. Smooth ! Other one was just like the one in video. 27-2 .357/38 nickle with 8 3/8". Sadly, a family mber stole it 😢. That 27-2 firearm was superb in every instant. Own 2 black Hawk rugers 357/38. They're okay firearms but not up to same standard as the S&W. Really enjoyed this video felt like listening to my dad & his team as a kid in the late 50s... 22:21

I have a few smith's and they're great pistols, however, I'd take a python over any of them any day. The quality and value are superior to any smith on the market. Beautiful pistols

Eh .... my 6" Royal Blue Python is hands down the most beautiful revolver I've ever seen, but my 4" butt ugly S&W Model 13 is the best shooter I've ever handled. A client of mine *gave* me his Model 13 after he saw how well I shot with it. Later, he managed to get the target I was using that day and framed it and gave it to me for my birthday. I keep my Python in my safe and take it out and shoot it once a year. I keep that old Model 13 by my LazyBoy recliner in case I have uninvited company.

I had a 6" royal blue python. After a day on the range i went home and cleaned it. I noticed there were chunks missing out of the rifleing(didnt seem to effect the rifling, it was a tack driver). I couldnt live with this. The very next gun show, i holstered it and walked through the show. A guy stoped me and asked if i was willing to trade it off. I told him and showed him what was wrong with it,he didnt care. He was hot on getting a python. He offered a straight across trade for a vector arms V-93(h&k 93 clone). I took it. I did a little reaserch before i let the python go. Turns out mine was built in the late 70s and colt had a batch of bad barrles. Mine wasnt the only python to have this problem. Owning the gun was cool. I got a lot of attention at my local indoor range, and it was a lot of fun to shoot. The problem was that i had payed 700 dollars for the gun in around 2005 and by 2010 i saw guns just like mine selling for 2500 dollars. Thats insanity, because truthfully it wouldnt really do much that my 6" 686 wont do. add to that chunks comming out of my rifleing and trading it away made a lot of sence. I wouldnt mind owning another python, but in my experience they are more status symbol than weapon. Just my 2 cents

@@diegos2594 well, the new colt wheel guns had some problems right out of the gate. Ive heard that the bugs have now been ironed out. I love smith wheel guns, i think they are the best bang for the buck. Rugers are very tough guns, if you screwed up with your reloads a ruger is definitely the gun to do it with. Rugers are usaly a little cheaper, but they dont spend much on fit and finish. If i was going to go out and buy a new wheel gun today, it would probably be a smith. Once again, just my 2 cents

Thanks for the video. I have quite a collection of S&W revolvers. I noticed you prefer the shiny stainless or nickle revolvers as I prefer the blued ones. Thanks for going over the different revolvers at the end of the video. We're not that far apart. I graduated from high school is 1973 but didn't get involved with guns till 2008.

I will not ever buy a Ruger again I got rid of mine on a trade my wife still has hers that gun was garbage I hate everything about it. ruger doesn't get another chance with me I will never buy a gun with the name ruger on it for principle. don't put out a piece of shit gun PERIOD.

Honestly, the fact that they decided to not compare the GP-100 is very telling. If the Smith would out-perform it, they would have shown it. Any serious gun-owner already knows this though.

Coulple of nomenclature differences between the Colt snd S&W. S&W “Cylinder Release” was a “Thumb Piece” on the Colt and the Yoke on the S&W was a Crane on the Colt. When doing orientations for USBP classes I used to “Mix and Match” the nomenclature to make the names more descriptive of their function. The Colt’s Hand indexes the cylinder counter-clockwise, thereby applying pressure on the extractor star in the “Closed” direction, thereby obviating the need for a front lockup. My absolute favorite handgun is a 6” Colt Python. I used an agency Colt Officers Model Match (Poor man’s Python) for IPSC competition. The only down side to the OMM 6” was that it was a .38 Special and therefore a “Minor” cartridge under IPSC rules. I heard about this fellow from the deep south who was doing very well on the circuit with a Model-27 S&W revolver. I really wanted to have a chance to shoot against this fellow (Jerry), but since we had 20+ classes per year at Glynco (FLECT) I was absolutely tied up with classes and never did get to shoot against him. Probably a good thing, bcause at that time I had always been High Revolver Shooter in any match I attended, including the IPSC Nationals, but I suspect that I just might have come in second had we met. ;)

I had respect for Jerry Miculek, but not after watching this video. I have been shooting Colts and Smith for nearly 50 years. When I was in my 20's I shot quarters at 25 yards with my 2.5 inch Python, I could never repeat that with any factory Smith. My father in-law who had been an excellent gunsmith since 1946 fired my Python and told me that was the best trigger he had ever pull. I have had my python 40 years now with not one single problem. I shoot hollow base waddcutters to make the gun last longer, but I have shot 6 hot rounds in a 1 inch circle at 25 yards when I was young and stupid. You are right about the trigger being slower to come back. Hitting what I want is more important to me than speed. You would be surprised how fast and accurate you can shoot single action. It does not take much time to pull the hammer back, at the same time getting the best sight picture. Pulling the hammer on a Python is so natural you don't even think about it. It is true if you run 1000's of hot rounds throw a Python the time may be off and it will have to be repaired. NO FACTORY UNTUNED SMITH WILL SHOOT AS WELL AS A PYTHON THAT IS A FACT.

As Mr. miculek is a revolver professional he certainly knows that the Colt doesn't need 3 locks since the cylinder rotates into the frame. And after 2,5 million rounds with SW triple locks he has certainly noticed that that triple lock locks up the gun when the ejector rod loosens after a lot of shooting! Nice SW commercial though, but not very informative. Anyway, if you need to shoot fast and can't shoot 2,5 million shots you take Colt 1911.

This commercial makes me unhappy. My Python is 40 years old and has never been work on. The Python is being compared to two guns that have been tuned. If he would slow down with the Python a few hundreds and pay attention to sight picture his pattern at 25 yards would be much better than the tuned up Smith. This would have been a better test if used a plain factory Smith. I own and like Smith's, but I hate this propaganda.

Only Jerry would take a fixed sight 2 1/2" out to 50 yards and shoot like that:) I was fortunate to have been trained by the absolute best LA County Sheriff armors back in the 70's. On the day families of new recruits were invited to the academy they were shown the pistol range. As a demonstration, trainer Don Calverlo collected everyone in one area and explained why their chosen S&W K frame model 15 4" was the one they issued to all deputies. One guy raised his hand and said a semi-auto 9 or .45 was a better police gun. Faster, more bullets etc. Don listened then picked a random cadet and asked for his new unmodified issued completely stock Mod. 15. Don had a lady put 6 rounds of .38 wad cutter range ammo in that unknown gun and close the cylinder. He then fired at the target 25 yards away. When done he asked the crowd how many rounds he had fired. Most said 4, one or two said 5. He opened the cylinder and all six were gone. And 6 holes were on the target. He then reloaded, turned the gun upside down and fired double action at a common playing card hung edgewise 5 or 7 yards away. The card was neatly split. That convinced me that I could not blame my shot placement on that S&W gun. Having owned a 6" Python all I can say is it was a beautiful thing like a collectible old Mercedes car, but not as good of an every day shooter like a Smith.
