Mastodon are one of modern metal's most prolific purveyors of the riff. The Atlanta band's eclectic catalog is packed with memorable, technical and physically crushing guitar passages that weave between sludge, prog, and classic heavy metal with a level of proficiency that few other bands have achieved. Their music can be jammy and tuneful, but guitarists Bill Kelliher and Brent Hinds always keep their songs grounded with massively heavy riffs. There're so many ten-ton guitar parts in their catalog to choose from, but we had the riff-meisters themselves pick - and play along with - what they deem the heaviest in their repertoire. See their picks above and let us know some of your favorite heavy Mastodon riffs in the comments below!

@@portal432 I know “Crack the Skye” and the “Cold Dark Place” EP were largely Brent’s work, but the more interviews and documentaries they put out the more apparent it is that Bill and Brann are largely responsible for most of the Mastodon material. @Luemm3l

one thing I appreciate about mastodon is that some of their riffs are relatively simple while others are not, but the way they combine them then is just songwriting mastery. whether that is the old stuff or their newer, love it all. I mean a song like more than i could chew is relatively heavy but has a way more melancholic vibe than the old stuff from "remission" which is more frantic crazy energy. some other songs I kinda had forgotten (shame on me) like circle of cysquatch also have incredible heavy riffs, yet I feel I never really heard or appreciated them as much. brb, gonna listen to Blood Mountain again, probably a record I did a little dirty since it was my least favorite from the "elements" records, but still the discography is obviously pretty stellar. my award would probably also go to intro from march of the fire ants, but also trainwreck is great, burning man, heck almost everything from remission, then we have the iconic blood and thunder, iron tusk, also stuff like more than I could chew is almost doom, really cool song too.

I love Bill and Brent's different approaches to this interview. Like Bill has It all figured out, he practiced the riffs again, he got his AxeFX all hooked up and gives a detailed rundown of each riff. Meanwhile Brent just exudes "hell yeah, man that's cool." And has no ranking or riff ideas of his own. He's just so laid back about it. I think it speaks to their different personalities, neither approaches are bad it's just funny to me.

Mastodon are my favorite band of all time. I would agree with the majority of this list and am very glad Circle of Cysquatch and Hand of Stone are getting the respect they deserve here. Wish Aqua Dementia's second to last riff (the repeating one) made it in here over Blood and Thunder's ending riff though. the main riff of High Road is also absurdly heavy.
