Revvl 4+ Not Charging | Teardown and charge port replacement guide

Today I have the T-Mobile exclusive Revvl 4+, a phone not many people are likely to be familiar with unless you have T-Mobile. This one doesn't have a good charging port, and I'll be showing you how to replace the entire daughterboard. Links to parts and tools below:

A gambling man like myself! To be fair it's just a safety precaution, if the battery is dead or the phone is powered off it is very unlikely to cause an issue. Glad to hear another phone has been fixed and is staying out of the waste bin!

At :26 you mentioned the finger print reader. Can I get a replacement for that connection? Somehow I broke it as I was opening her phone. I purchased four of these phones and three of them the batteries have swelled up!😮 I hope you can answer my question. Thank you!!!

Yeah absolutely, you can order them separately from some vendors online. They aren't "paired" like an iPhone, so it should just be plug and play!

Thanks you helped me repair my phone! The charging board was actually sorta working but very infrequently. Bought a new board, slapped it in and now I'm cooking with fire! Side note, what exactly would I have needed to have done to fix that? Seems like a contact issue? Anywho thanks a bunch for being so damned helpful!

Intermittent working is usually one of two things, either the port got loose and some of the solder points broke, so it only charges when held at an angle. Or the port was packed with pocket lint and dust, preventing the charger from going all the way in. Glad I could help!

What was the point of taking apart the top part of the phone, if the charging port is in the bottom half of the phone? Do you have to undue all those components? Did it exactly as demonstrated, put it back together carefully with all components plugged back in, and now the phone won't even start up. Oh well, worth a shot. Glad it worked for others.

The top was removed to access the battery connector and safely disconnect it before swapping parts around.

What tool do you use to remove the back panel of the phone my charging port is starting to fail and want to change it before it is to late

I use a metal shim that is 0.1mm thick, mostly because it's reusable. You can achieve the same results with a card from a deck of playing cards (or a pokemon card if you're a monster). A bit of heat, a touch of alcohol and some patience and you should be all set!

Just a pry tool, iFixit calls them the iSesamo tool. Very durable, very good to have for many applications

Just used the amazon link to buy the charging port. I installed it as prescribed. My phone is charging perfectly now. But, Now I am having a network issue. I am having trouble going on the internet and making calls. (FYI the antenna cable is secure... i double checked by reopening it and making sure it wasn't a loose connection) Do you recommend any trusted source in order to get an OEM charging port?

Best place for OEM would be ebay in this case! Just make sure it's for one that matches your model number exactly as there can be quite a few variants

Absolutely no data loss! I always recommend doing a backup, because that's just a good idea any time, but there's almost no risk to your data during a screen, battery, or any other basic repair.

Hey I did a screen replacement and got the 'cannot charge right now ' error sitch. Guess I shouldn't have lifted off that connector cable, though I can't see the fault and it's not like the phone cheerily goads me that pin 13 is open 2" from the USB-C end just solder. Or maybe I bent the little pcb too much? Is there an easy way to scan other than getting lots of light on things, maybe a polarized light thing?

Very similar design, doesn't use the same parts but the process for disassembly is nearly identical

I am curious about the missing contact spring 1:09 because I don't see one on mine and the battery charges now but it doesn't turn on would the spring missing be reason ?

It shouldn't be, as far as I can tell that pin just connects to a redundant wifi antenna, it shouldn't hurt the charger

Question, is it necessary to remove the SIM card when repairing a phone?

I'd say with a majority of Android phones it's necessary since many repairs involve removing the board. On most Apple phones the only time you'd need to move the board is for a charge port replacement or a frame swap of sorts.

@@Cineenvenordquist I removed mine carefully and placed my SIM card in a tiny plastic bag to wait until repair. It went off great and my phone works perfectly now with the charger port replacement.

The inside of my revel 4+ looks different and I didn't have a clips my back had glue and I didn't have nine screws I had 5

Anonymous gaming 👍🏼 If you're still interested in repairing your device. This vid link shows how to remove frame. Once frame is removed, you'll have access to all the screws. My device has (16) screws. There's a plastic cover plate to access charge port board and another for battery terminals. A word to the wise! Not all of the screws are identical. Some are plastic tap screws and some are machine screws. Keep them straight when you remove them.

Yes batteries are completely replaceable, just gotta remove the back panel!

@@apollothedutchie547 it isn't as easy as it used to be which is why they say consumers can't replace it, but they are easy enough to open and get to if you have a small screwdriver. You would need the TLP038D1 battery, you can find them on Amazon

Typically shops charge about $60-$80, I don't offer mail in repairs just yet, I'd check some local shops!

Dude. Could NOT disassemble the back panel off. Could you maybe go into a MORE STEP by STEP video of HOW to do this? I had an Exacto knife and I could NOT see a point to insert it. I have watched FIVE videos about this problem, so far. Nothing has worked yet! I'm glad it's NOT MY PHONE! I, myself, have had a CHEAP Galaxy 5 Samsung for YEARS and have not had any problems with it... Trying to fix room mates phone..

There isn't a point made to insert a tool. You just need to find the seam/line that separates the back from the frame, and force a tool into it on any side.

You don't need to fully remove the battery, just disconnect it from the board. If the board is powered during the repair there is a high risk of bridging components with metal tools and shorting out the entire device. For the same reason it's a good idea to disconnect the breaker in your home before doing and electrical work like installing a new light fixture or outlet.

fwiw this particular phone makes og battery replacement easyish by permitting unwrapping an outer clear back wrap with tabs.

You don't have to, you could also solder a new port in to the existing board, but given how cheap the part is it might be more cost effective to just replace the board with one already installed.

I was confused because I didn’t see where you changed it (took out that part - the port). I don’t even know where I would begin to get whatever parts I need.

@@tammyc25 no worries! Because the part is already on a board it will be even easier. It's just plug and play! The hardest part of this repair will be getting the back panel off, from there it's just smooth sailing. I've updated the description with a link to Amazon for the part. BUT this is only for the T-mobile version, the Metro PCS phone uses a different port. There's also a link for a screwdriver set if you need one!

@@TapticDigital thank you so much. Yea that back panel, they told me it’s not the same as the older phones meaning you can’t take the back off to change the battery. So it looks like you use a box cutter blade, it’s ok then to open? And thanks for that Amazon link. Lastly, I got my phone when they became T-Mobile. Thank you, you’re very kind.

@@tammyc25 the back is made of plastic but has adhesive running around all the edges. Your best choice would be to heat it up a bit using a hair dryer, then using something thin, sturdy, but maybe not sharp for a first timer. A playing card out of a deck may be the safer choice. A few drops of isopropyl alcohol (don't use nail polish remover) dripped on to the card will help break through the tape.

my revvl 4+ can still charge but only at a specific angle, would i still need to replace the full board? also i noticed that you removed the rubber gasket(?) is there a reason for doing so?

Probably won't even need to replace the port at all, if it still works at certain angles your charge port is probably juste gummed up with pocket lint and dirt and needs a good cleaning. The rubber gasket is kind of optional, because this phone barely has any moisture resistance, it doesn't help a whole lot

@@eveningyoon most of the time it gets packed into a flat shape from the charger being inserted repeatedly, very hard to tell. Using some tweezers I'd scape a little bit of the side away from the pins to check.

Most people would say it's to make sure they are water resistant, but I disagree! The Galaxy S5 Active was water resistant and still had a removable cover.
