Truly a master class of biking review. Awesome job, Spurgeon - walking the very tight line of not being over-geeky yet super-technical; and, on the other hand, not being over flashy but showing some serious chops on the curves. Definitely seems like someone who not only understands bikes, but is willing to spend 2 weeks with them just to create an informative review. Way to go!

+thepassionofthegoose My wife has a van, but I don't own a car. My bike is my transportation. Having said that, $18-25,000 for a bike is a lot of money to most of us. My dentist has two big BMW's, but he'd never think of riding them to work. I think those of us who really like to ride, ride whatever we got. Some of the folks who buy expensive bikes, just buy expensive bikes. Make what you will of that.

This is the best review I've seen to date! All the goods and the bads are right on the spot. My major complain has been the bars and I am considering replacing them with the ones from the R1200R. I also added the Cylinder Head Protection that is a must. It would be a very costly drop if that should happen and it can happen to any rider. Also, for an $18K bike the bags should be included. Awesome video with great scenes from my hometown!

REALLY enjoyed this review, Spurg. Superb production values, killer content and commentary. I have a new R12RS, and absolutely love it. GREAT bike. My only complaints: - Front fender is too short, allowing mud, rocks, debris to hit the front of the engine case - No rear fender/mudguard/hugger, allowing aforementioned road muck to fling onto my rear shock, and everything else back there...

Great review. Thanks! I've been considering parking one of these next to my Multistrada. I'm 6-4 and liked the less cramped peg position when I sat on the r1200rs at the dealer. And the leaned over posture isn't as aggressive as a full sport. I love my Multi but the top-heaviness is harder to manage in the corners.

You want crash bars? The bike will just slide on the cylinder heads, put covers on them if you must, or try not falling off! Bar risers are personal, it's supposed to be a sports tourer, not a tourer. The original R100RS, and I've had four, had sports type bars, as did the R1100S and RS. If you want to sit upright get an RT, or even an R1200R (which I have now) which is actually a more engaging ride, albeit you lose the fairing (and still no crash bars!). Otherwise a great balanced review, as always.

its all about marketing. this is a sport/TOURING bike. and it seems that BMW wants to accent the touring part of it. and on a touring bike, the speedometer is more important for the rider, since he will almost never redline his/her bike but on most superbikes, its the other way around thats just a personal guessing of course, not a rock solid fact ;)

Thanks for the review, Spurgeon. I was initially more excited for this bike's arrival, but your video (and article) have given me pause. I, too, dislike the fact that BMW provides superfluous accessories at the expense of panniers given the bike's intended functionality. While the RS is a personality match for me, I am skeptical as to whether or not it has a place in my garage.
@SpurgeonDunbar
@SpurgeonDunbar 9 жыл бұрын
+Sir Revzalot I'd say you should take it for a test ride. Even if you don't end up buying it, it's a hell of a machine and you won't regret at least taking it for a spin. What are you currently riding?
@sirrevzalot
@sirrevzalot 9 жыл бұрын
+Spurgeon Dunbar Thanks for the reply, dude. I'm riding a 2014 Street Triple R, and I love it. After sitting on the R 1200 RS, I recognize it has more relaxed ergos than my current ride. It's an impressive machine that gets me excited (Odd for a BMW, right?). Do you think the RS is a good next step?
@SpurgeonDunbar
@SpurgeonDunbar 9 жыл бұрын
+Sir Revzalot the R 1200 RS will be more relaxed than the your current ride. I love the Street Triple for what it is, a sport bike with handlebars instead of clip-ons. It spins up fast and frantic and allows for an aggressive ride. The RS is more refined. The Street Triple is a wild-eyed teenager in comparison. I'd say your next step is to test ride the RS and see if it meets your needs. What are you looking to tackle? Longer rides? Additional comfort? Available luggage? If so, you might prefer the RS. However, if you just like burning up backroads on the weekends you might find it better to stick with the Street Triple. We are lucky to live in a day and age where it is hard to find a "bad" motorcycle. It's all about finding the right motorcycle to meet our needs and budget. I wish you luck!
@sirrevzalot
@sirrevzalot 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply, Spurgeon. I am looking for a more touring-capable bike, so the R 1200 RS is definitely in the equation. There are other bikes that perform the touring function better for the price, however. This bike will have to fit like a glove to override my hesitation. Thank you for your time, dude.

Nice review - helped me a lot. It's worth noting that Gear Shift Assist Pro does nothing if you use the clutch. The mechanism works up and down the gearbox flawlessly and smoothly without the clutch as long as the throttle is kept shut on the down shifts and good acceleration - plenty of throttle - on the up shifts. If you're on a light throttle you need to use the clutch, otherwise it's messy. Get in in first for tight corners and junctions and enjoy the smooth acceleration all the way up the box.

Outstanding review! I'm with Spurgeon here as far as the boxer. Needs crash protection. Crash bars look fine on a GS but man, they'd look fugly on a sport bike. Also adds a good bit of weight to a bike they tried to keep light. Probably not a bike I'd be interested in but a helluva review for the folks looking to buy one. Now I have a request! Please oh please do a review on the KTM 1290 Super Adventure!! Thanks in advance. ;-)

Greg got away yes, ugly but for touring in a playful way the engine guard, with the low light add ones make it a balanced and tough looking machine with the bags on it. Sorta MadMax like in all grey. I got ultra long pro commutes (which I created) so love the safety, strength, and full package option and that makes it look awesome. That said Aprilia makes a super pretty 1100 v4 factory which I would really appreciate for a gorgeous day play sex toy. Ahahaha😚

Great review and I'm so pleased it's not just me that noticed the "heavy" feel at lower speeds, needing opposite input in tight turns! I have had a fleet of boxers, this one breaks the mold completely..I can't wait until Spring to get out on some longer rides..One slight criticism of your review and that's the demographic, which seems to stop at 50! I'm 62, been riding since 16. Trust me my young friend, though 50 may seem a far off spec across the ocean right now, your time will come sooner than you think.. Awsome review as always! keep up the good work. I have some dirt bikes, a Husky and of course 300 Ktm. SP (Stillwell performance) has always helped me with after market stuff, shocks etc. In that regard, one of the first things dirt-bikers talk about is sag. Is sag considered after the purchase of a street bike? Wood be a fun video. Oh, and my sister appreciates her sun-glasses back. She approves of the new ones as well:), AND as always, shiny side up.
@joshb3929
@joshb3929 9 жыл бұрын
With electronic suspension like on this BMW, sag isn't an issue. The bike is setting everything up for you. On other bikes it's often over looked but since the suspension is no where near as soft as dirt bikes, unless you're in the extremes when it comes to weight, it's usually somewhere close. It would be great to see some Zilla setup videos but I'm not sure what would be in it for them. MC Garage with the 'On Two Wheels' guys has a lot of cool stuff like that.

My daily rider is '97 BMW R1100RS. It is an awesome bike, very stable and with a lot of torque. You can carry very heavy luggage on the highway and the bike still handles like a dream. I am still impressed on how well that old bike runs. I am a total boxer engine fan, it has a great feel and character. The new boxer engine has come a long way, and I hope that one day I can buy this one. I am sure that they new front suspension is great, but you forgot to point out that the RS doesn't have the telelever suspension. That is one feature that I enjoy a lot on the older version. Not having front brake dive inspires a lot of confidence and it is very comfortable for passengers. I think that the older RS didn't include the luggage as well. Lastly, the older RS also has that slightly leaned forward position, and there is a lot of mixed opinions as many people prefer a more straight forward position for the touring part. Personally I think is part of the sport side of the design and I am glad they kept it until today. Thanks for the detailed review!

Yes if value is what you are looking for then the GS is hard to beat in its all round capability. But will you really take your GS off road? The RS looks nicer , is lighter and has almost the all round abilities of a GS (minus off road). The RS is probably better on a freeway too.

That sound... One of the best together with the Triumph Thruxton, Speed Triple and Ducati Panigale. Amazing bike, I only don't like the front...

I like the concept of the bike. I'm almost 60, and looking for my first bike, and I'm looking for a long distance commuter/sport tourer. I agree with Spurg's assesment that the bike should come, as standard, with luggage. I also agree with him that some sort of a riser for the bars should be available, but I suspect that Helibars will be along shortly with something, if they don't already have it. Maybe Alt-Rider will come out with some crash bars, too, if they haven't already. But, here's my biggest complaint. At just a hair over $18K, with no luggage, a small windscreen, and an underwhelming display, around here, in the Seattle area, I can get a two to three year old K1600GT, with less than 10,000 miles (in some cases, less than 4,000 miles, for $18K. Okay, it's not a new bike, and I realize the demographics for BMW riders probably demands a 'new' bike, but for me, given that much money to spend on a bike, I certainly would be willing to purchase a gently used motorcycle like the K1600GT or GTL over the R1200RS. BMW does make an engine protection bar for the bike, as well as adjustable foot pegs and a host of other products. But, optioned with luggage, engine protection, windscreen, etc., the bike tops out at over $22K. I could build a very nice F800GT for less than $16K with more storage space! Still, I wouldn't complain too much if one found it's way into my parking spot. :)

+Gary C I understand your used argument. Almost all of the motorcycles I have ever owned have had someone else's miles on them first. There is nothing wrong with that. When you start pricing out the bikes with real world numbers there are a lot of options to choose from. Be careful with some of those early K1600GTs, they had some known bugs with them. An F800GT would be a great consideration. I would think you could probably find one of those used for a great price. You have a lot of great options out there, Gary. Congrats on getting into the sport. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you, aside from being able to get one of these into your parking spot!

Spurgeon, I can get a low mileage used F800GT, under 4,000 miles. They jacked the price $1,000 for the holidays to give me 10% off, but still in all, it wouldn't be a bad bike. www.peninsulamotorcyclestore.com/new_vehicle_detail.asp?veh=338470&pov=4485560 My problem, right now anyway, is lack of funds, and my credit rating took a dive due to being out of work for seven months. I'd need to get a set of bags for it, but I'm sure it would be a good commuter bike, and occasional weekend tourer.

sweet review. I've been looking and riding a bunch of BMWs. the rs is definitely a nice bike. what blows my mind is that BMW (rumor is) that '16 is the last year of the Kbike. However, it really does seem like BMW is making great success with the boxer/suspension platform. I'm hard pressed to make up my mind between the 4 boxers.

Great video for the most part, but this made it really hard for me to want to subscribe and come back for more: If you care to read thoughts as I humbly accept I may be the only one here... Background music too loud when talking. Noisy river as background noise when talking. Over excited, almost shouting into the helmet microphone makes it hard to sustain interest. Get better wind protection or something to help reduce the need to raise voice. Introduce a few more natural pauses. Seems like all dialog has nothing but commas in it.... 09:55 for example... Pause... dont replace a pause with... "Now". I'm not good at video editing (my videos are proof of that), but some feedback.

I'm considering a 2018 version of this bike that was dropped but brought back to OE by a BMW service outlet. Evidently the valve cover cracked by the valves themselves were not damaged. I'd love some feedback about this from folks who know the bike.

I don't like the colour options. Topcase is too small for most tourers too. The 49 litre topcase they offer the RT should have the same fittings so the rider can choose which to attach
