From cold, neglected dumping ground to cosy attic work space - it's been four weeks in the making but my budget attic room makeover is finally finished!

The Backstory:
I've been stuck in rut for the past couple of years - both my parents passed away at the end of 2022 and since then I've been navigating grief, burnout and just being scared to make a change. I decided that 2024 was going to be the year I set my life on fire, because life is too short to spend all of it wondering just what the point is. So I quit my job, sold my house in the suburbs and bought a 150yr old cottage in the middle of the Scottish countryside. Follow along as I attempt to renovate this little stone house, build a backyard homestead and hopefully fall in love with life, all over again.
Spoiler alert - I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so almost anything could happen.

He’s definitely getting more confident! I found him sitting on the sofa the other night - which is very unusual! (If I’m not in the room, he’s usually under the furniture!) I’m hoping he’ll continue to get braver 🤞

You should be wonderfully proud of your office. All you need now is a great leather chair, a pipe, a smoking jacket, and an ascot to complete things as a proper Gentleman's Library, lol! All kidding aside, though...you WILL need a low stool near your chair with something cozy on top or Sven to lounge on. Otherwise, he will take up residence on your lap or desktop as you try to get things done! Apparently, all cats are convinced that they are excellent Office Assistants, but they definitely are not. (Don't ask me how I know!) 😊😊😊

Your videos are the highlight of my week. Thanks to you, I now like Sunday evenings. Before, it was just dull and unpleasant knowing that Monday is coming. I was also the first to hit the like button this time-the things that make me happy! LOL! I wish you a lovely week ahead. Every victory is worth celebrating. You are an amazing human being. I like that you are so real and your good heart shines through in every video.

It really does! The fact I sketched out a little plan and then eventually ended up with what I’d drawn out - is so satisfying! Blankets-wise, I made the first two I roll up in this video - the pink and cream one my mum made! I have a pretty big collection of handmade blankets - about half were made by me, and half by her! (The blanket collection was the best bit of the inheritance for sure!)

Jude, I love how you are willing to jump in and try things and truly appreciate that you leave in some of the oops! Most DIY shows erase those moments leaving people think they have to be perfect. If I edited out all the mistakes, I think some videos would be about 3 mins long! Especially last weeks! 😂😂 I think there’s definitely value in seeing people make mistakes, because none of us know everything from the first attempt at something! Sven is such a good boy - his favourite game is sitting on the keyboard while I’m trying to edit, so I’m hoping the desk stops this… (it probably won’t 😂)

What a result Jude you are justifiably pleased , those crocheted throws are to die for❤ A stroke of genius to paint all the same colour made things so much easier as regards time and effort ( I detest painting ) and works so well . I would glue some felt stickers on the bottom of those storage crates so they don’t scratch your paint work. I think you can definitely call this a result. By the way I love how Sven is working his powers on you to become his human 🐈 x

Jude, it really looks lovely, and amazing to think you did it all yourself. So many people these days are put off by the very thought of DIY because everything has to be “instagrammable” and thus perfect and permanent - you prove that it doesn’t, it merely has to be PRACTICAL, and suitable for the moment. Nothing needs to last forever, it just needs to last for as long as you need it, so much better to do it on a budget. I so admire your “get on with it” attitude, well done!
@rewildingjude
@rewildingjude 16 сағат бұрын
Yes! You’re totally right - and yet I feel like a lot of the people with those instagrammable houses, probably have a lot of mistakes / bits that aren’t finished or painted as well as they could be etc, they just don’t show those bits! I think we tend to be afraid at being bad at something - because when you try anything for the first time, it’s probably not going to be great - but the more you do it, the easier it gets - even if you’re not actively seeking out skills and learning, just doing stuff again and again, it gets easier - and DIY is just like that! (At least, that’s how it’s been for me, so far!)

Yours is my favorite vlog that i watch….seems like once a channel takes off, the authenticity wears off…and the vlogs are over produced, and many people become actors of their own made for KZbin show, where everything is edited so much that the person seems too perfect. You are a breath of fresh air. You are genuine and have an honesty about you. I do hope your channel grows, but I also hope you dont lose, what brought is all here…Just Jude, being Jude, and letting us visit and cheer you on as you go about your day. …The room is awesome, by the way. But now I see the benefit of it. Not only is it going to be a place you enjoy spending time, but you learned new skills that you can use moving forward, and next time you tackle something similar, you will do an even better job. Terrific job on the peel & stick stuff. I would have gotten so many wrinkles. 😂❤

I think installing that peel and stick might’ve been the hardest part of the whole project!! I didn’t manage to get it on straight either but I won’t tell if you don’t 😂

Your custom built-ins are so impressive! The roofline makes this look like such a tricky project. They turned out beautifully!

You made a wonderful office out of that room. And it could easily be a permanent place. Very well done, Jude!! I am proud of you too. The lining of the desktop looks very near aswell. And all of this for that small amount of money. You are blowing everyone's mind. Lots of love, Marieke

Jude, you are an amazing, talented young man. As a cat mom to six cats, I can tell you that speaking baby talk to Sven is the only way to talk to cats. I recently discovered your channel, and it is amazing how much you have accomplished since moving into your house. I look forward to seeing your next project. You are so inspiring, and you should feel proud of how far you have come. Keep up the good work!

When you're watching and Jude uses your Amazon gift! I wondered what you were going to use that wood effect vinyl for. Superb content as ever Jude. We love you Jude!

I have the same exact room, Jude, the same exact room. I never would have thought to do built-in bookshelves.But I absolutely love it.And I never would have thought to paint those bookshelves the same color as the walls but it looks beautiful!!! I think you did a great job.And I can't wait to see everything you're going to do to this cottage.

Well done Jude. Hey, you don't need to put acoustic panels on the walls. You can buy three-sided folding panels that will sit on your desktop, for when you're during recording. When you don't need them you can fold them up and put them somewhere else.

Love your afghans. My mom crocheted a lot of afghans. I’ve had the ones she made for me for along time and I just recently gave them to a young 1st cousin (once removed) to give to her daughters so they wouldn’t wind up in a estate sale. My daughter, son & grandkids all have great grandma’s afghans also. I’m 76 so it’s time to pass along some of these handmade items. Look forward to seeing your cottage renovation.

OMG. The office looks wonderful. I knew the shelves would look great once painted. To have accomplished all on such a tiny budget is impressive ( the new tools shouldn’t be counted as they will continue to be used). Bravo Jude. 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦

Invest in a bag of latex/vinyl gloves for all your staining/ paint projects. It will save a lot of scrubbing on your hands. Since you have somewhat of a skylight hang a mirror above the desk. It will bounce light around the room and allow sightlines behind you. Put cork boards on the vertical sides above your desk. You should be extremely proud of yourself for the progress in your skills. Bravo!
