Rewind: Rob Morrow of "Northern Exposure" 1994 chat on early career, Johnny Depp, "Quiz Show" & more

I interviewed Rob Morrow during the 1994 press tour for "Quiz Show." We talked about that film, plus how "Grease" impacted his choice of career, his early acting gigs, shooting in New York and more.

Like many, I'm re-watching "Northern Exposure" after 30 years, now that it's finally streaming, on Prime. Such a gem of a series. Such a rarity to have intelligent TV like that, and with such gorgeous cinematography. Also enjoyed "Quiz Show". And...gotta love that gum chewing! So New York! 😂

In a recent Facebook comment on his group page Rob Morrow compared himself to Joel Fleischman. Both had similar backgrounds growing up, allegiances to anything NYC, and both signed bad contracts. Both real and fiction wanted out of their contractual obligations. With his producers scaling back his appearances in the show to somehow to quell the discontent for Morrow the writing was on the wall for his departure, it just was a matter when. Add to this the original producers Brand & Falsey departed after 66 episodes and in came David Chase who stated he accepted the job for the money and hated the snow and wanted to kill it.

@@cindywestlake6278 Yes I think he has remorse about what occurred with the demise of NX. He led the recent effort to revive the show but COVID shut down the idea apparently. I feel his actions or opposition for returning to the show after year 2 led to Universal eventually opting out as they were not going to back the expensive production anymore than they had to. Ratings were still very very high. When Brand/Falsey departed they hired David Chase and he admitted to hating the show and having a hand in killing it off. Josh Brand to this day blames David Chase more than anyone for the end of the successful series.

@@ericscottstevens Just my 2 cents, but the clips I've seen of Rob recently (in his early 60s) he's way more likeable than in this clip. I think he's mellowed out some (as we all do with age) and has come to appreciate Northern Exposure and what a great opportunity it was for him and the doors it opened for him - like Quiz Show. In this clip, he just comes across kind of arrogant and I always pegged him as someone who kind of got over their skis a bit - thought he was a bigger star than he was at that time. He has that air about him in this clip. I think he thought he was going to be a huge star - and acted that way - but in reality he never reached superstardom. But, he had a pretty good career. I'm about to finish up the series on Amazon Prime. The first 4 seasons were great. The last one is trash by comparison, so I think you're comment about David Chase is probably correct.
