The coil is actually 6v not 12v. The resistor steps down the voltage to 6v. You can run 12v to the coil but it will burn out quickly. This is why the wire directly from the starter bypasses the resistor for easier starting. After your done cranking, the coil will get 6v while running.

@@imabass77 ok, because mine is electronic ignition 12v now, and I bought the kit for it but I was little bit confused about this ballast resistor wiring I call the kit seller about my question and hope everything is ok now 😁

Thanks a bunch just bought a 3020 gas and there was no information to get the panels off, so thank you also for the reply to the someones elses comment... mine started slow and didn't charge after watching this video I know why. I hope you do more videos about the 3020 because they are needed and the manual doesn't do as much justice as you made in this video. What are your 4 fuses?

I have a 3020 gas that recently had a wire meltdown and I'm looking to redo the wires too, so this is a great video! Although a schematic would even be better, I'm wondering what circuits you fused as well? Thanks!

Thank you for this, thumbing through the service manual and looking at your video it doesn't look so daunting anymore haha. Any tricks for getting the panels off? The manual I have doesn't really show me much.

There are only a few bolts to take the panels off. The screens are held on with springs and a lever. The rear panels just have a spring loaded pin. The cowl is held on with 4 bolts. There are only a few bolts that hold the floor pan down. Worst part is lifting off the hood by yourself. Less than 15 minutes to strip the panels off to give you all the access you need.

I have a question what gage wire did you use for this project I have a john deere 2020 I want to rewire?

I dont recall. Most is likely only 16-18 ga except for the wiring from the alternator to battery. That was likely 8 ga.

what number or letter on the alternator (1 or 2 and F & R ) does small wire that goes to the ignition switch on?

If you are using the GM style alternator, the small white wire on the 2 plug clip goes to the ignition switch. It technically goes through the alternator light on the dash then to the switch.

@@imabass77I have a 2040 johndeere so I got the wiring from the alternator to the starter now I got that jumper wire from the alternator to the top one I guess I should switch it to the bottom plug and now the question I have is I run a wire from the top plug to the ignition switch like what part of the switch?? If I do that will the alternator be continuously charging the battery and over charge it? Or would it be ok and is there a voltage regulator or is it really that simple? Just the top plug to the ignition switch? Hahaha sorry for the long response

@@creightonlee5468 if it's a modern gm style it has a voltage regulator built in the alt. It should not over charge unless the alt is bad but the typically don't charge at all when the alt goes bad. The large wire on the 2 wire clip goes to the battery or simply connect to the main battery lug on the alt. This lug should go directly to the battery. The small white wire goes to ignition switch that is +12 volts when ignition us on. This wire starts the charging by exciting a coil in the alt. The alt charging light on the dash is connected inline to this small wire. So small wire to dash light then the other side of the light to the ignition switch. It does not matter which way that light is hooked up. So when you turn on you ignition that light should come on. After you start the tractor and the alt starts charging the light will go out. If that light is dim or does not go out, your alt is not charging.

No kit. Just need a few wire colors and wire loom material.
