OMG - after struggling for days on end I was finally able to rewire my entire 3-terminal night light thanks to your excellent presentation here. The only real problem I ran into was getting the screw back into the base onto the fitting. For some reason the screw wouldn't fit down in the hole so I had to futz around to widen the opening. Now all 3 settings work perfectly. Thank you SO much for this. I still needed some help from other sites, like how to tell positive from negative wires, but everything works now and I am just thrilled!

Thank you very much. "Positive and negative wires" are terms that don't really apply to lamps and AC power. This is for DC systems and electronics.

Great video! What is the new wire you used for this lamp? Did you purchase it or make it? What words do I search for the wire with the light bulb at the bottom

Thank you very much. The nightlight socket is called a "pigtail socket". It comes with 18 inches of wire attached to it.

@ around 8:41 were you pushing wires for both the main bulb lamp portion and night light lamp? It wasn't explained.. Lot's of talk about the lamp itself lol example.. Here is the main cord for the lamp and here is the cord for the night light.. then show how the cords go through the lamp.. that part is the only part I needed to know.. but other than that good job. I think I can figure it out... it's not a gone with the wind lamp I have its a large mid century table lamp but has the same concept with the night light thanks

The lamp cord and the nightlight wires go on the pipe at the same time.

I just noticed the 3 terminal socket that is still in the lamp has portions of the wiring connected to the screws (3) (I cut them last year and threw the rest of the wiring in a drawer thinking I'll figure it out some day) so that gives me an idea what goes where ..I can match via the color with the bottoms I cut and put in drawer. thanks

What size bulb is the bottom night light bulb ?

The choices are limited. 4 watts is the usual choice.

Does the ribbed wire go on the black screw?

No. The ribbed wire always goes under the silver screw. The black screw the nightlight switch terminal.

Then what goes under the brass screw. Is it 2 ribbed ones under the silver screw. 1 smooth on brass screw 1smooth on black. Sorry I'm so confused.

Thanks for your help the problem is I have 2 lamps 2 different wiring. Where do wires from power cord go? Where do wires from the nite socket? go.

@@dianeellsworth The silver screw will have 2 wires, the ribbed cord wire and the white wire from the nightlight. The smooth cord wire goes to the brass screw. The black wire from the nightlight goes to the black screw.

Hickey sockets come in one way and 3way. It's up to the customer. The old 3way bulbs were large and needed a taller shade harp. LED bulbs are the same size.

@@BronZeage so what I am working on is a antique hanging Hurricane lamp. The previous owner converted it to candelabra sockets up top in the shade and in the socket underneath. I want to convert back and regain the control of either the top or bottom lights. What I need is a 3 terminal socket then right?

@@delta3garcia Yes. The top socket is a 2 circuit 3 terminal. I always use a hickey socket.
