"Non antagonistic side characters are just as much there to challenge the protagonist as the antagonists" is one of your most clarifying concepts that I always come back to.

Seeing Paddington and Tyler in the thumbnail reminds me of when he said “you can’t pit Paddington against Thanos” 😂🤣🤣

Another fantastic video! So much to dig into. I think I tend to overthink my characters. I like how Tyler said in this video that characters actually aren't all that complicated. Just give them: 1) a desire 2) a belief that relates to your story's theme 3) a consequence if they fail. Obviously this is easier said than done, but it helps me understand it. I'm still struggling to wrap my head around how I should decide on what the story's philosophical conflict will be. How do you know what kind of philosophical dilemma your script will explore? What if you can't figure out what that is? Do I just need to dig a little deeper, think a little harder?

Oooh, yes, create situations where the protagonist must make a choice related to their want and core belief! That's such good advice, thank you!!

Great stuff Tyler! One of your best videos yet! I'm a visual learner, and even though I already had a lot of this information and thought I understood the methods, this helped me apply them. I worked through a problem in my short film script today because of this video, and the way you break down ideas with diagrams!

One problem can be that the "costs" or eventual "benefits" to a protagonist (or antagonist or other characters) of an unusual or unexpected or ironic event that ambushes the protagonist may not play out for a long time, even with other people (not visible to the original protagonist) or in subsequent generations. Many movies handle this with an "epilogue", sometimes with explanatory text on the screen before the credits. Many stories based on real events are like this. I wonder how this should be handled. (I saw "House of Gucci" yesterday, the closing courtroom scene ["epilogue'] seemed like a copout after the climatic scene with the shooting.)

Great video. I have a question though. Is philosophical conflict the same thing as internal conflict?
@StoryGameArtist2 жыл бұрын
(Hi, big fan of Tyler here.) Effectively yes. Philosophical conflict is about how to live life. A character being conflicted internally is because they aren't sure of the best way to live their life.
@CarlosCastillo862 жыл бұрын
@@StoryGameArtist thank you for answering. That makes sense, So a philosophical conflict can be more overarching in the story, as in "people that hold this view VS people that hold that other view", while internal conflcit can only be for one character, if he is conflcited about something major. I guess a philosophical conflict can also be an internal conflct, such as in non-linear character arcs where the character is not sure of their philosophical stance. The philosophical conflcit is a great concept!
@TomEyeTheSFMguy2 жыл бұрын
I always consider internal conflict as your movie's metaphor for the philosophical conflict.

Manchester by the Sea gives us a great character with a flat arc. Lonergan actually makes the IDEA of a flat arc the theme of the story--sometimes we simply cannot overcome tragedy and effect change in our lives.

Tyler has no references he is a newbie and tries you to sell his own course. It is a making money strategy and you will learn crap from him. It works like a placebo you think you making progress but really you only learn techniques which are not worth to learn and also brings you up from learning your own style of creating new ideas and stories. He only made 1 script, he has not won any Filmfestival/Oscar etc. It is the same for most of the courses. You do not need any paid courses to get good in writing. Do not listen to this bullshit!!!
