I think the slide rule is stupid. If QB’s were just treated like runners when they leave the pocket, they would protect themselves knowing that they will get tackled like everyone else. They aren’t even attempting to protect themselves because the NFL has made it the defense’s responsibility to keep them safe.

Sliding is like going out of bounds on your own. You are giving yourself up and aren’t trying to gain additional yardage. Running backs and WRs can do it too, but their job is to get those yards. They are easily replaceable. If the QB gets hurt the team is cooked

Exactly. The way QB's slide prioritize getting a meaningless extra 1 or 2 yds. They leave their heads completely out and exposed which makes the impacts worse when their brains are rattling inside their helmets. The entire technique needs to be scrapped. They can't expect Defenses to not accidentally kill them when they're literally putting their own heads on the butcher blocks

The slide rule was literally created because QBs weren't protecting themselves lol... You think they just created out the blue to fix a problem that didn't exist? They could do this to force QBs to stop faking it, then the defender 100% knows he is going down and can lay off. In this case though- TLaw was going for the first down or trying to get as much as he possibly could. You wanna go to the rest of your season games with the 4th string QB? There's a reason the rule was implemented. NFL is a business that needs viewers. Not all QB's are the size of Trevor Lawrence. These guys are getting destroyed inside the pocket when it breaks down... Imagine a open field full running hit from a DB..

@rogerc5645 Forearm shiver or swim is part of the defensive play in the NFL. The only reason it's an issue is because it was delivered to a sliding QB who after seeing an on rushing LB should have protected himself by sliding earlier or diving to the ground. But instinctively, be wanted to scrap extra yards, or take advantage of the rule to gain a penalty. I'm not defending dirty plays. But this wasn't one. The play was there to be made. Lawrence slid late. That's why we're even having this conversation.

Here is the problem. Before they started putting in rules to help protect qbs, qbs were getting knocked out at an alarming rate. Then we had a bunch of games with backup qbs that no one wanted to watch. This is why they started adding special rules in the first place. This goes back to the 80s. The league will not do anything that will cause more qbs to get hurt because no fans want to watch backup qbs play because they suck. So protecting qbs at any cost is always going to be first priority. Trust me, you would not want to watch NFL games if mostly the backups were playing. It would be horrible. And now with more running qbs than ever, the league is going to need special rules so that the qbs will not be treated like regular players. Fans are ok with running backs being knocked out, they will not be happy if their starting qbs get knocked out. And if qbs didn't run then 1/2 the qbs in the league wouldn't be good enough anymore so they don't want to stop the running. Basically, they need some rule to allow it while making sure qbs aren't getting knocked out left and right.

Defenders are taught to give the QB the chance to slide or get out of bounds. You can signal the QB that he will get hit if he tries to fight for more yards, but that's about it. If you don't honor that unwritten rule, the other team won't either and blast your QB every chance they get - and at some point he will go down and you can kiss your season goodbye! Everybody now knows that the Texans will go after your QB, so I wish CJ Stroud good luck for the rest of the season...

@NateDawg920
@NateDawg920 Ай бұрын
Yall explaining the basics..of course I understand how the rule is written, where the QB is marked down, etc. That's why I'm saying on THIS slide, because not all slides are the same. When you're both running at each other full speed and your intent as the defender is to tackle the guy..the later the QB goes into their slide the more dangerous it becomes. Defenders in football have a harder time than other sports. So many things are penalties and now there's fines every week as well, but at the same time your coaches all through out your time playing the game want you to get after it and make that tackle. When you're moving that fast it's easier said than done to pull up at the last tenth of a second. Rex and Dan are right. QB's are much better off making a head first dive once they've committed to running towards a Defender.
@ACE-Fast29

Die hard Jags fan 💯 percent agree with Rex. The game is now Qb runs, and scrambles. You can tackle them hard, they can throw the ball away , and slide while every other player has to take a hit like a man or dive foward. If you man enough to take off be man enough to take a hit. Weve seen the Josh Allens truck defenders and Pat Mahomes get missed on tackles because defenders pull up. Stop this mess NFL.

The problem is that defenders are now taught to go extra low because otherwise they'll be flagged for helmet-to-helmet against a ball carrier dipping their head down. But now that also puts them at helmet level with someone who is sliding. Diving seems like a good idea until someone dives and hits someone's thigh and sustains a serious neck injury. I think it might just be best to just not give ball-carriers protection via sliding at all. It might just be better to just rely on defenders to hit people low. We'll end up with more knee injuries but less concussions.
@mr.brownmusic606

I think if QB starts to slide the play is over. If the QB fake slides they should be assessed 15 yard penalty and loss of down for unsportsmanlike conduct. They are trying to manipulate the rules to their benefit. The slide rule was initiated to protect the QB not to give the QB an unfair advantage to either fake slide or to trap opponents into commiting a penalty....it is unfair to defense that NFL allows the fake slide.

@ashs4022
@ashs4022 Ай бұрын
A feet first slide, is "exposing" the only part not supported by the ground, your head. In a league where they want to "protect defenseless hits" and yet teach the QB's to "slide feet first", is counterproductive. You running with the ball? you're a runner, run, act like one! Lower your shoulder and take the tackle, stiff-arm, juke or spin. Sliding makes ZERO sense and they should make it illegal to slide feet first by ANY player. The only reason why a QB "slides feet first" is because they are told that they are "special and a priority" by their team, GM and owners... NOT the person hitting them. Running backs do NOT slide feet first. Wide receivers do NOT slide feet first. TE's do NOT slide feel first. Fullbacks do NOT slide feet first. Defensive players who recover a turnover, fumble or interception do NOT slide feet first. So Quarterbacks slide feet first???? Because at full speed, a defender has laser focus on getting you and stopping you, they cannot change their vector mid tickle and will lead to more and more of this.

You don't understand this much. The league depends on the starting qbs to be playing. Fans will not be happy watching games started by backup qbs. That happened in the past, if you want to destroy NFL viewership, just let the starters get knocked out so backup qbs are playing all the time. TV sets will be clicked off. The NFL is a violent sport and players get hurt all the time. The league cannot afford to have the qbs get hurt. They don't have enough good ones for all the teams in the league, they can't afford them getting injured. This is business and no ones wants to watch backup qbs. They'll accept backups anywhere else, but not at qb. So the entire league doesn't want qbs hurt. They are practically ordering qbs to not get hurt. If they do anything to put themself at risk, they are told to stop it and protect themself. I doubt you would be happy if your starting qb was knocked out (if any good) and had to watch a lousy backup every week. The league will never allow qbs to put themselves in much danger.

Someone has to be honest: This is the QB's fault. The QB put the defender in a position where the defender has to try to make a play. They're both running full speed, they both initiate their slide/dive at the same time. The defender should/could have tried to avoid forearm contact, but there's also two factors here: 1) The defender has already committed to the dive, so he can't dive face first into the player or turf, hence his arms naturally move into that position, and 2) He sees an opportunity to make a play on the ball, so instincts kick in to try to dislodge the ball from the opponent. A defender with more awareness would have avoided forearm contact, but a QB with more awareness would have not put himself or the defender in that position.

@@raymondrembert6870 I'm not arguing that the defender isn't responsible for the hit, but the hit was just a few inches above the ball. Defenders are taught to try to knock the ball out. It's an art onto itself. Had they made contact a quarter-second earlier, the defender would have made contact with the QBs arm carrying the ball. And that's really the point. Two guys are sprinting at 15mph. Sliding at that short distance, the QB is asking the defender to do one of two things: 1) Make split-second calculations and acrobatic adjustments mid-stride or mid-air to avoid contact or, 2) Not do his job and just allow the QB to gain yards at will. If the league wants to avoid these types of situations, it needs to discourage QBs from forward sliding in potential contact situations.

That would have been a dirty hit, if the carrier was standing. The fact that he was on the ground made it much worse, which is why it's a suspension and not just 15 years. It really doesn't look dirty to me, guy is trying to tackle, not too high, not to low running full speed and the QB slide putting his head at the exact spot the guy was already heading. That is the QBs fault IMHO... the person trying to make the tackle can't read minds, he doesn't know, usually until he is already committed what you are going to do. You can't change at that point. Yet I saw a guy on threads pause the frame so it look like al Shair was upright and Tlaw was already on the ground and trying to argue his point that it was a dirty play. When I commented that I didn’t think it was dirty when I saw it live he said “I give visual proof and yet you still deny it it’s clear you’ll just say whatever to fit your narrative “ I mean this guy literally took one frame that was shot at 60 frames per second and made it look like he had time to not hit tlaw . Rex is 100% correct. The NFL has put QBs at greater risk teaching them to slide. QBs should fall forward just like RBs or WRs. That hit on Lawrence is on the league, not on the players. It was in closer quarters at full speed; Lawrence is doing what he is taught and the defender is trying to make a play. I feel for Lawrence but Rex is absolutely right in this case. The league, Jacksonville, and Lawrence should not be expecting the player to pull up at full speed in a split second. Especially when Lawrence has a tendency to run hard at times and not slide. If it's a 50/50 that Lawrence lowers his head or slides, the defender is going to play the former every time. The league also turns a blind eye to QBs faking avoiding contact and slides. It happens more often than most think and they always end up in huge plays. Defenders assume the QB is going to slide or run out of bounds, a little headfake or slight hip drop, and they keep going. If they want to minimize hits like this, they have to look at both sides of the plays equally.
@marklaplante8675

In this era of frame-by-frame slow motion playback, it's very easy to claim that this was a dirty hit. But put yourself in the shoes of the defensive player. The opposing Quarterback is running for a first down and you rush forward and throw yourself at the QB and he slides. You have a split second to react and not everybody has lightning reflexes. If they're going to slide, then have the QB stop and kneel. Look at how Mahomes will run for the sideline and if the defender hesitates to knock him out of bounds, he then tiptoes up along the sideline for an additional five yards. I get it, the owners don't want to see their most important and/or most expensive asset put in danger. But football is a contact sport and a running QB should be treated the same as any other running back at that point.

I see nothing malicious about the hit, it was bad timing and the QB was at fault. He wanted the extra yards and protection. The slide rule has to go or be modified to behind the line of scrimmage. If you want yardage gain you have to be willing to take a fair hit.

@BnMGarage

Think about momentum. If you dive head first, your head will be the first part of your body to clear the danger zone. Sliding back leaves your head and torso available to target for the longest period of time. If they are running 14ish mph, It would take .5 seconds to cover 9ft. If you lead with your head, it is nearly impossible to be hit square by a tackler within 5ft. Leaning back will almost assure a square hit because the tackler is closing the distance at the same rate, while having time to target you torso.

The slide was introduced so the QB could slide way before contact and declare himself down to protect them from taking hits. The slide was not introduced so QB’s can play a game of chicken with defenders and wait until the last second to get down suddenly. QB’s have been taking advantage and trying to get extra yards for first downs or fake slide and then juke past because the defender is in a no win situation. I hate the QB slide. Why? Every QB that slides does so at the last possible second to get every inch they can. EVERYTIME it draws a flag. They slide so late that the defender is already mid tackle when they start. Come on this game moves so fast. You aren't going to be able to stop a hit at 15 plus mph when he's running at you with the same speed. That's a 30 mph hit. I don't blame the defender. To me that wasn't a dirty hit. That was a guy doing his job. If it was a dirty hit then these hits would be rare. Yet they aren't rare it happens all the time. Then NFL if it's serious about safety needs to eliminate the slide rule. In an attempt to protect them they made it worse.

QB's should realize that when they are trying to extend the run at full speed, especially when attempting to get to a first down, the defense is also still trying to make a tackle. Rex is right. They have to learn to take the slide earlier. This is going on because NFL/College D's are frustrated by "running" pretending to slide and juking them to get extra yards.
