@Darth Cameron just because the clone wars retconned the EU does not make it responsible for it's decanonization. lucasfilm could have easily said that TCW was non canon and that they were going to treat the clone wars multimedia project as canon going forward. did clone wars retconn alot of things from the EU like mandalorians, clones personalities, and greivous? yes, absolutely. but that doesn't make it responsible for what happened

Did you ever hear the tragedy of darth maul the lost... i didnt think you would its not a story nor jedi or sith would teach. Darth maul was a powerful dark lord of the sith so skilled in the dueling capabilities he even dueled two jedi at once. Maul was a strong warrior raised as a sith from a young age under darth sidious. Maul had suffered a loss in battle against a jedi padawan named obi wan kenobi, only to survive by his pure emotion of the darkside. He devoted his life to avenging his honor by only wanting to destroy the jedi who took his legs aswell as even trying to kill his old master who left him behind. Maul had confronted the jedi year on but never exacted his revenge fully. Maul had found his end to the hand of kenobi releasing his hate as he drew his last breath...

Even after all the pain Maul had caused Obi wan. Kenobi still held darth maul when he died. Obi-wan is a true good guy.
@ZebsAlleyOriginalMusic5 жыл бұрын
This is what I like about this edit, it hits all the main points, Obi understands that Maul didnt choose the dark side, it was chosen for him, so despite all the misdeeds he did he had an understanding for the person he could have been. And respect for him as a Warrior. The "He will avenge us" part kinda hits that home too, Maul despite opposing Obi and Hating him immensely, didnt view himself as all that different, both are steadfast in their ideals and respectable combatants. One could make an argument that Maul had attempted to turn Obi-Wan to the Darkside but had failed, similarly to how Obi-Wan attempted to turn Maul to the light. TCW and I guess Rebels did a good job establishing a duality between them, kind of like yin and yang.

Because obi wan knows somewhat what maul has been through, he was forced to be a Sith, tortured and brutalized to “train” him, the angry, cruel person that came out of that process was just what happens, he went through so much in his life, and the choices that lead him to that pain weren’t even his own, obi wan understood this and feels for the man in front of him, what he is, and what he could’ve been

The fact that Maul made peace with Kenobi right before dying is truly sad. The two go as far back as 10 years before the Clone Wars, meeting time after time again and clashing, both surviving. But in the end, at the golden age of the Galactic Empire, they both had become old and weak warriors. Though they’re enemies, they know of each other’s backstory and past life, they somehow have a mutual understanding between them. Simply amazing.

This guy loved a woman he could never be with, his master died, the woman he loved died, his friends were all killed or betrayed him and in the end he ended up alone on a desert. And after all this, he has risen above it. There on a desert, alone, old and destroyed by stress, he came through. He truly has the high ground.

The way Obi-Wan so *perfectly* countered Maul's attack tells me he rewatched Qui-Gon's death over and over in his head for years
@brettzforeman2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. He even changed his stance a few times to goad Maul into his mistake. He began with his usual opening stance, both out of habit and so his enemy would remember it and grow angry and reckless. Then he switched to the form IV defensive stance he began using after Jinn's death, appearing to raise his defenses. Then he appeared to rethink this and switch to Jinn's old stance, which was highly offensive with the weapon held off to the side in preparation for slashing. He first provoked Maul's emotions, then put him on guard with his most defensive stance, then switched to one he knew would bring Maul back to the origin of his revenge. He also knew exactly what attack Maul would use against his master's old stance. This is a signature Kenobi trick, to stay calm and try to goad your opponent into making decisions you can anticipate and outmaneuver. By making Maul repeat his old pattern, Kenobi lured him into a fight he had already been rehearsing for decades.

Not that I didn't appreciate Maul's end at first, but I appreciate it a lot more now because of the Clone Wars ending. I feel as if when Maul says "Look what has become of you. A rat in the desert" he's not saying that because that's how he sees Obi-wan at that point but because that's how expected Obi-wan to be. When they met again in the Clone Wars, Maul said he wanted Obi-wan to feel the same pain that he did. Maul has taken away Obi-wan's master and love at this point and because of Order 66, he's lost the Jedi Order and all of his friends. Plus with the ending of Clone Wars, we now know that Maulk knew about Anakin and how Obi-wan lost him in the worst possible way. From Maul's perspective, Obi-wan should have nothing which is why he so desperately set out to find him on Tatooine. He believed that Obi-wan would be in despair over all of his losses and wanted to see him "festering in your squander" just like Maul was after his loss on Naboo. The problem for Maul is when he sees Obi-wan, he sees he hasn't lost hope at all and has grown stronger which pisses him off. Maul learns this when Obi-wan tells him that he has nothing basically hinting that despite all his losses, Obi-wan still has something important that keeps him together. When Maul figures out that Obi-wan still has one thing left that's important, he becomes filled with hope that he can still throw Obi-wan into despair. Once Maul makes it clear that Obi-wan is protecting someone, Obi-wan knows that he has to stop Maul right there and now. He knows how obsessive Maul is with revenge and how he would either hurt Luke or try to turn him like he tried with Ezra just to hurt Obi-wan, but if Maul were to succeed, he wouldn't just hurt Obi-wan but also risk putting the entire galaxy in danger. Obi-wan couldn't let that happen and he couldn't go about the peaceful way the Jedi prefer and let Maul live. Maul HAD to die at this moment because he was being controlled and led by his own despair that would've only caused more despair. Maul's story is by far one of the most interesting things in Star Wars history.

He was an acolyte raised to believe he was a true Sith Lord because Sidious and Plagueis needed a patsy, someone to antagonize the Jedi and sow paranoia without either of them putting themselves on the line. Sidious actually planned on making Dooku his apprentice even before Maul "died" on Naboo. The fact that Maul was always an expendable pawn for Sidious makes his story even more tragic.

I think, in the end, Maul was never truly a Sith at heart. He had training under Sidious, yes, but the main goal of a Sith Lord was to amass as much power for themselves as possible, and that was never Maul's goal. When serving Sidious he was entirely loyal and never even considered betraying him, which is contrary to the Sith way. Afterwards he demonstrated genuine care for Savage. Even his ultimate goal of killing Kenobi had little to do with amassing his own power and instead little more than a personal vendetta, a very small scale goal in the grand scheme of things. Basically the main reasons he worked to increase his power were either for the sake of others or to kill one man, and those goals go directly against Sith teachings. I think, likely around the time Sidious killed Savage and made Maul his slave, he realized that. In Rebels it's clear he has no love for either the Jedi or Sith and in his final moments he finds a certain level of solidarity with Obi-wan, whom I imagine may have felt similarly, as he realized that in the end they had both been little more than puppets and both their lives had been ruined by one man. And in the end he found himself with... hope as both he and Obi-wan, even if they had different views of the prophecy, saw Luke as the next step to finally make things right. And then... he died at peace. Shit man... Star Wars can be so good when it wants to be.

You're right it wasn't his fault he joined the dark side, plus the suffering he's been through exemplifies it. But I think the whole star wars ethos of the force and how it protects people is an almost literal metaphor for our emotions... If we let your negative emotions control our actions and our life you will end up like Maul, in the desert with absolutely nothing on the verge of death driven by his anger, his sorrow and his need for revenge. Control your negative emotions *rise above them*, a life embracing the light is fuller and happier as it serves a greater purpose rather than serving yourself and your ego. *Edit: Let go of the past, live in the present and you will find purpose. ☮

This fight between them was deeper than a simple lightsaber duel. When Obi-wan "Look at what I have risen above." To me he is saying he has accepted his mistakes and hasn't let them consume him. For Maul he is so fixated on revenge that he has psychologically fallen in his ability to even think or fight. Because, all his mind is on is "I got to have my revenge. I must kill Kenobi." And when Obi-wan hears Maul mention Luke he knows he has no choice but, to fight. And it is like an old samurai film where the two fighters would switch stances and fake out their opponent. So to me this was one of the most emotional duels other than Obi-wan vs Anakin. Because, both have been through so much and they knew it had to end. And when Obi-wan ends it he still shows sympathy for Maul and Maul I feel realizes Obi-wan was the wrong person he was chasing and that the Emperor was really his enemy. R.I.P Maul 1999-2017

One joined the Jedi pridefully, while the other was sold to the sith. One who knew of love and comradery, while the other knew only of pain and loneliness. One betrayed by his apprentice, and the other by his master. Both lost everything only knowing true peace once they passed, and both avenged by Luke's purity and spirit. Two people so similar yet so different as if they were, each one side of a coin destined to never walk the same path. Wow. Seriously didn't think the creator themselves would have time to reply to me. ^_^'. Having kept up with the CW show when it was still airing, this really hit me hard with waves of nostalgia. You blend scenes and character speech beautifully, and I have to presume that you have a wonderful taste in music because it compliments this video exceptionally well. I didn't even know Maul survived after his confrontation with the Emperor in the CW show, as I don't watch Rebels, so I was more than a little surprised to see him facing off against an older Kenobi. Anyway, let me say, again, that you've done an incredible job with this video, and I believe all the time you spent on this did not go to waste. It's beautiful and a very touching tribute to one of the greatest rivalries in the series. Kudos, and I hope you keep kicking ass with your future videos! Honestly, I started to really like maul in the clone wars and rebels. Not just his badassery but simply... He had a kindness deep within that was sometimes crawling out of him but supressed by his sith teachings. I honestly think maul was kind deep inside and this was portrayed at the very end. He didn't show any hatred at the end and when he saw obi wan he acted more like meeting an old friend. In my opinion maul's character development simplt highlights what makes the clone wars so great, and to me him and ashoka were the only reasons to watch rebels.

now THIS is incredible. it highlights the struggles, the pain, and the emotions that these two experienced when facing each other, thinking of each other, until finally coming to a head. one rose above their anger and hatred, the other was consumed by it. in the end, Maul had lost before the battle had begun. he lost himself in his rage against Obi-wan, and it shows with how quick the fight was. he had nothing left to live for, therefore I think a small part of him wanted to die by Kenobi, to end the pain and hatred he endured once and for all.

I've always considered Maul one of the most tragic characters in star wars. He was stolen as a child by Sidious. He then spent twenty hard years being hammered into a weapon by his master, only to be grievously wounded by Kenobi. He then survived 10 more awful years, his desire for revenge feeding his will to live. He was found by his brother, and made whole again. He allied himself with the death watch, only to be betrayed, then turn the tables of them again. Just as things begin to look up for him, his old master comes, kills his brother, and tortures him. Sidious then uses Maul to lure out his family, who he kills. Literally, his entire life was one hardship after another. I just wish he directed his rage against the one who was responsible for all this, rather then Kenobi. Palpatine.

Captain Rex Now that I think about it, almost all dark siders stories' are tragic except maybe Sidious. Ventress whole clan and almost everyone she knew and loved were killed, all because she wanted to come back to them. Savage was treated as monster and even though he was very powerful, he was pushed under the ranks and apprenticed to Maul. Dooku just lost faith in the Republic after the way they had treated the death of his apprentice. And we all know Vader's story. I'm not saying that they should not be held liable to the lives they have taken and the crimes they have committed, but they really had no guidance, no choice. When we all say "Oh just turn back to the light side" It's really not that easy as the dark side had already corrupted them. Dooku, Ventress, and Anakin were all great Jedi (But wait. That doesn't necessarily mean they are good. The Jedi in my opinion and Anakin's, had good intentions, but were corrupt and evil, as the force is evil.) and could've walked down a brighter path. This is one reason I love Star Wars. It only skims over a bigger picture that is to be explored in the minds of the fans.

Then you have nothing. R Maul: [igniting his lightsaber] And what do you have? Why come to this place, not simply to hide?... Oh, you have a purpose here. Perhaps you are "protecting" something? No... protecting *Someone*. R Kenobi: [ignites lightsber and gets into stance] R Maul: [ignites his dual lightsaber and gets into stance] R Young Kenobi: A new hope will emerge. CW Maul: Your noble flaw is a weakness shared by you... [lifts Satine into the air with a force choke] ... And your Duchess. You should have chosen the dark side, master Jedi. Your emotions betray you. Your fear, and yesss... your anger! Let your anger deepen your hatred! CW Kenobi: You can kill me, but you will never destroy me. It takes strength to resist the dark side. Only the weak embrace it. CW Maul: It is more powerful than you know.... CW Kenobi: And those who oppose it are more powerful than you'll ever be. I know where you're from, I've been to your village. I know the decision to join the dark side wasn't yours. The Nightsisters made it for you... CW Maul: SILENCE! You think you know me? It was I who languished for years thinking of nothing but you. Nothing.... Rebels: [fights ensues and Kenobi cuts Maul's lightsaber in half, and as Maul falls to Kenobi's arms] R Maul: [Dying] Tell me... is it the chosen one? R Kenobi: He is. After watching this for the 20th time I noticed how Maul‘s eyes are changing their color right at the end. Maul was a broken man by the time of Rebels. First he got cut in half, then after years of festering his hatred for Kenobi, he finally gets new legs, only to be beaten by Kenobi multiple times, he then takes over Mandalore for a few days until his old master comes, kills his brother and then takes maul away. He then escapes (via deathwatch) and then he runs to Dathomir, only to have mother talzin die. He then travels the galaxy and the next time we see him is on Malachor, a broken aging sith.. and the last time he fights Kenobi, he is clearly outmatched and he gets cut down by him again, only this time he doesn't survive and he dies in his rivals arms, declaring that "The Chosen One" will avenge us
@PeterTheMightyPygmyPuff7 жыл бұрын
What if that was the result Maul wanted? He was so broken and drained of hope that he went into the fight with the intent of losing? Him saying "he will avenge us" shows to me that at that point, his quarrel with Kenobi was done. It had finished and Maul finally understood that he and Kenobi were both tricked by Sidious. I don't think Maul was stuck in the past as much as he just knew that Kenobi would be able to defeat that same move.
@Zooka1287 жыл бұрын
On top of that, a lot of Maul's fighting ability relied on him using the force to amplify his abilities. I would guess that he cannot manage to enhance himself anymore as well due to the fact he probably hadn't been as focused or as much in love with the dark side of the force as he once was.
@kyleerickson47417 жыл бұрын
I love this video. This rivalry (though that might not be the best word) is definitely one of the better stories to come from Star Wars. And when I watch this video, I actually imagine one more element being added to their final meeting. I imagine Obi-Wan trying one more time to extend an olive branch to Maul, one last chance to sit down and be, well, just human. I see Obi-Wan having let go of any hatred he might have had for Maul for killing Qui-Gon and Satine, and almost pleading with Maul to let go of his hatred for just a moment. And here's something like how I think the dialogue would go. Maul would likely be too blinded by hatred to consider doing this, but the idea of watching these two long-time rivals who are now getting old and tired just talk is something I'd like to see. Starting from Maul, "I have come here to kill you. But perhaps it's worse to leave you here, festering in your squalor." Obi-Wan, "We both know you won't just leave me here. Your hatred of me has been your driving force for all these years. One of us will die tonight... But if this is in fact our last meeting, then I'd like to offer you something." Maul, "And what could you possibly offer me?" Obi-Wan, "A chance to be at peace. To just talk; not as adversaries, but as friends would. To let go of the hate and the pain, if only for a moment. And I can think of no better place then sitting by a fire. No better place to have fellowship." Maul, "Kenobi, you can't be serious. Has this desert heat and your exile driven you mad? I finally have you here, right in front of me! There is no fellowship between us. Only my hatred for you." Obi-Wan, "Haven't you ever wondered what it would feel like? Has anyone you've ever known asked you what you dreams were when you were young? What inspires you? What would truly make you happy?" Obi-Wan looks at Maul with an empathetic, almost pleading expression. Maul's expression changes from being angry to perplexed. Obi-Wan, "You have known nothing but hate your whole life. Even when your brother Savage found you, your actions were still driven by that hate. But look around you, Maul. There's no reason to hold onto that hate anymore. What will you do after you've killed me? You are just like me; an old relic, forgotten by the galaxy and forced into hiding." Maul, "I am nothing like you! You and I share nothing! I won't have you speak to me as if I am some lost soul. I know my purpose, and that purpose is to kill you!" But Maul's eyes betray him, and his voice has less control. Obi-Wan, "I don't expect you to change your mind about fighting. But I sense a part of you yearns to know what it's like to be shown compassion. Please.... sit. We both deserve one last chance to feel compassion, to forget about our pain and hardships. And through it all, maybe even learn to understand each other." Obi-Wan sits. Maul, rather begrudgingly, also sits. Honestly I could watch an entire episode of Rebels where Obi-Wan and Maul are sitting by this fire telling stories, talking man to man, with it ending with their short but important duel. While their upbringings were very different, their current situation is very much the same.

Kyle Erickson I gotta admit rebels did actually do a good bit of using the old show to add to the story, but I still feel as if until the ending of the old stories there isn’t much there, plus they could’ve maybe relied a little bit less on some things from the old show, that one about the geonosians didn’t really need to be included. The whole original concept of the show was rather lack luster, and in the second season it wasn’t much of an improvement. Maybe I’m biased because I stayed up every night at 8:00 with my dad to go watch Clone Wars, but I just don’t feel the same for this show. Plus I feel the animation style got a bit too cartoony, and then we have the whole fact of it being a Disney XD show.
@Champsr0ck22477 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I felt that Obi-Wan would at least try to settle things peacefully. But I think judging from Obi-Wan's demeanor in Maul (treating him as an annoyance) he knows that Maul wants.....to die. He wants to be put out of his misery. Why after all these years, does he find him now? What purpose does it serve to Maul if he beats a slightly untrained Obi-Wan? He's not extending the olive branch because Maul already makes it clear that only 1 of them is walking away from that campfire.
@Camaroni10006 жыл бұрын
Kyle Erickson I love that, but does your version still end with them fighting? If so then it reminds me a lot of the first duel in the princess bride. One guy helps the other from falling to death, then waits for him to be ready before dueling him.
