I first heard that song while watching Valley Girl. So captivated was I that my 12 year-old mind made a vow that I would grow up to have a new-wave life that was kind of like a stylish early 80's movie. So...yeah....Sun Prairie Wisconsin. It's totally like if that song was an actual place.

I used to perform this song with my band in the 80's and when I sang the chorus it literally sent chills up my spine. It was the harmony with the other singer/guitar player and damn that solo is AWESOME!

Back in the day, I had a cool job performing stage security at San Diego State University and saw a ton of new 80’s bands pass through. I had the pleasure of seeing the Plimsouls perform several times. They were super tight, wrote great tunes and would really whip the crowd into a frenzy. Boy, was I wrong about these guys....... I thought they were going to be huge commercial success.

Around the same time on the other coast, another really talented band was equally prepared to shoot straight up into stardom. The SMITHEREENS. Catchy lyrics driven by a strong Rickenbacker lead guitar and a solid rhythm section, these guys rocked. While I never got to see the Plimsouls in person, I did see the Smithereens. Both bands should have done better. That's the enigma of life, no? Peter Case was really good.

@chriscoughlin92893 жыл бұрын
Roger McGuinn is the Roger McGuinn of power pop. There's a reason he figures prominently on Pete's debut album. Pretty sure no less of an authority than, say, Cyril Jordan (Flamin' Groovies) would back me up on this one. Both he and Petty - among countless others - were pretty fond of covering 'So You Wanna Be...' live over the years.

Do you really think the name was the reason the Plimsouls never reached a higher plateau? People said the same thing about a bunch of English rowdies during the British Invasion. The Rolling Stones seemed to have made a mark for themselves. I thought the Wall of Voo Doo would be in the same vein. Only they broke up much too soon. Names are rarely the reason with one notable exception: The ASS PONIES. WTF were they thinking?

@John Gerson I don't think McGuinn ever shied away from turning it up to 11 in his heyday - particularly during the Clarence White/Skip Battin/Gene Parsons incarnation of the Byrds. If you needed any - here's a much earlier piece of evidence of that - circa '66. .kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIWUhXd7ncSgftU Unless you're talking about, say, The Kinks, Them, maybe the Nashville Teens (Tobacco Road) - this was about as heavy as it got two full years before Cream, Tull and Sabbath.
