I met Mr. Carnera in the early 60's when I was a little boy of 10 years. He was so kind to me and shook my little had as I gazed up looking at this behemoth of a man. Primo was one of the largest heavyweight champions in history, very few have been bigger before or since. His max championship weight was 270lb and in photos of the fight you can see it was all solid muscle. He was in fact the heaviest fighter to win the championship for several decades. Primo at his biggest would have made Anthony Joshua look undersized. He would look much bigger than Wilder and he would even outweigh Tyson Furry at his heaviest by a substantial margin and with a superior physique to boot. The Klitschkos both had shorter reaches and while they were a bit taller, again Primo averaged a higher weight. And young George Foreman? Primo would not only stand a few inches taller with a few inches in reach advantage, he would outweigh him by anywhere from 30 to 50lb. Primo was massive, he would be a specimen in any era.

For way, way too many years, sports writers were brutal in their reporting on Primo. Most of these critics had "never" climbed into the ring at all, but criticized the Italian Alp with fiendish delight. Primo was a large, very athletic man, that was quick to smile, courteous to the public, and had a very impressive win/loss fight record. He was the Heavyweight Champion of the World by way of a knockout of Champion, Jack Sharkey. I thought his fight and loss to Max Baer to be one of the most courageous fights ever fought by a fighter. Primo was knocked down numerous times, but climbed back up each time and fought back, giving it his all, the way a champion should. Primo actually won several rounds before the fight was stopped in the later rounds. Primo continued to fight several years longer and would finally retire to take up pro wrestling after the war (WW II). From what I understand, Primop had some dishonest people around him that fleeced this nice man of much of his earnings as a fighter.I recently saw a great movie on Primo and it was terrible that the ex-heavyweight champion did not have enough money to return home to his beloved Italy 1st Class on a ocean liner and had to go 2nd class. Primo was a much better fighter than he was ever given credit for. He was the Champion of the World and deserved better than what he got! He was a game, courageous fighter that never had anything in his fight record to say different. Carnera was a trusting man that was fleeced of much of his earnings by people he trusted around him. Primo was a hero to many Italians, who disregarded what the American media was saying about their Champion. May Primo Rest In Peace.

@willsmith57256 жыл бұрын
Nah. There just is a huge gap between the skill and ring iq when comparing Joe Louis sized boxers to the smaller divisions today. The 12 round fights compared to the 15+ round fights of old give the big, muscular heavyweights of today a huge advantage considering they just have to keep everything technically sound for 12. Smaller sized guys (5'11-6'3) have many advantages over a limited big mf like Joshua. All of these big guys almost get in their own way because of their size, along with having a smaller gas tank and ceiling for the volume of consistent snapping punches.

As a child my grandad used to show me pictures of him and tell me he was from Middlesbrough, and that one day I would be as big as him ha ha. His story is unique and incedible...from travelling with the circus and fighting for food, to becoming the first ever Italian Heavyweight Champion of the World. A truly awesome physique for his time and formidably strong, some overlook the raw fighting skill that he possessed. His association with The Mob has overshadowed his career, but one legacy that remains is what a generous and kind gentleman he was. Primo was a really good fighter and gets an awful rap from most people. He was that generation's Sonny Liston - people said he was a mob controlled bum with no heart, which couldn't be further from the truth. If you ever watch his fight against Max Baer, he gives it everything he has... He gets knocked down multiple times early from crushing shots (by one of the hardest punchers ever, probably hardest of that era behind Dempsey and Joe Louis), then goes on to have some good moments and win a few rounds before taking just an absurd amount of punishment causing the ref to waive it off). The guy ran into a motivated, prime Max Baer who maybe only 3 or 4 other guys in the 20s & 30s could have beaten... Doesn't make him a bum at all.

@Pedro_Le_Chef Жыл бұрын
@@andrewr62 Leon See is the main source for all the Carnera slander. The thing is, Carnera had some very important fights with the top fighters of his era and he seemed to come out on top. His first fights against non contenders seemed to have benefited from fixed but that was the case for everyone else so I don't see why Primo gets singled out here. He fought and legitimately beat Tommy Loughran, Paulino Uzcudun, King Levinsky, Art Lasky, Jim Maloey and Ernie Schaaf. He then knocked out Sharkey to win the title. Even in his losses, Carnera showed true fighting spirit. He went the distance with Sharkey the first time around even after Sharkey dropped him. Max Baer fouled repeatedly, Primo broke his ankle falling down early in the fight and he still fought on for 11 rounds, and was outpointing Baer before he had to quit. He also did much better against Joe Louis than many top fighters of the era managed to do. What Leon See says doesn't add up with who Carnera actually was. It's baseless slander and to single out Carnera for his mob ties when everyone and their mother had mob ties is disingenuous. He beat the top fighters, he beat the champ, he lost admirably, he was a good fighter. That's what we can say for certain about the man.

@JABARDELLI5 жыл бұрын
Primo Carnera is a much maligned fighter and champion and the subject of so much on-going libel and slander that wanna-be boxing historians fall for the falsehoods generated in the 1930’s without digging deep for the truth of the man and his career. That’s why lawsuits are commenced against those who commit libelous and slanderous publications and statements ... the fabrications live on and needlessly destroy reputations of worthy individuals. A shining example is Carnera’s fight against Max Baer in 1934. Carnera was stopped in the 11th round. How often have you read where Carnera is praised for his courage in fighting on a broken ankle suffered in the 1st round when Baer knocked him down? In fact, Carnera could put no weight on his foot, ankle, or leg throughout the duration of the fight and had significant balance problems, as well, and an inability to set to get punching leverage, yet, after the 10th round Carnera was leading in the fight where he showed resilience, guts, pride and determination to hold onto that Title. Disbursed film footage of the fight was altered deleting portions of the interior rounds when Carnera lodged a vicious attack on Baer to turn the fight to Carnera’s favor going into the 11th round. Alas, Carnera’s mobility was so hampered and Baer, to his credit, was able to land shots on a relatively defenseless Carnera and resume control of the fight to the point that Carnera asked it to be stopped as he limped about the ring seeking respite from the Baer come-back. Carnera was taken to the hospital following the fight where he remained while his fractured ankle was cared for and treated. The ankle fracture hampered him for the duration of his career. Read the BoxRec biographical coverage of Primo Carnera and you’ll see the continuation of a half a century plus of the on-going slights and denigrations against Carnera. For one example, there is no mention of Carnera persevering 11 rounds with a fractured ankle in fighting Baer yet the biographical sketch authors had the audacity to include, in its coverage of Carnera, a claim that Carnera stepped on and broke Tommy Loughran’s toes in a Carnera title defense ... still, yet, another denigrating untruth about Carnera alluding to allegations that Carnera was devoid of footwork. Keep in mind that boxing historian Bert Sugar left us revealing that Carnera would have beaten the Klitchko brothers. An assiduous study of his fight films reveals that Primo Carnera was a great fighter and one not given the respect owed to him as the great fighter he was and an unheralded knockout artist of the first order. Compare, for example, Jack Sharkey being knocked out by Dempsey, Louis and Carnera. Carnera rendered Sharkey totally unconscious with a single shot whereas neither Louis nor Dempsey exhibited that kind of firepower in their fights with Sharkey.

The best way to describe Primo Carnera is he was like a slower version of Marcos Maidana. I don't think people appreciate how good Carnera actually was he may not have been the greatest of heavyweights but he was still a top fighter nonetheless.

I don't think he's hated, I think it's more like he wasn't respected as a quality boxer/fighter.
