Vanuatu's Way of Life Threatened Amid Rising Chinese Investment

Vanuatu has been the focus of Chinese investment in the Pacific for the past decade. Projects include infrastructure, sports arenas, and educational institutions. For locals, this growing Chinese presence is bringing increased anxieties over the future of their nation.
As locally-owned private businesses face stiff competition from Chinese-owned enterprises, and as a massive Chinese-sponsored residential area known as Rainbow City threatens to dwarf surrounding villages, many Ni-Vanuatu worry that they may lose their peaceful and unhurried way of life. In the backdrop of these developments, a recently implemented cash-for-passports scheme that allows foreigners to purchase citizenship has attracted mostly Chinese buyers.
China’s investment in Vanuatu--part of its massive One Belt One Road investment initiative which spans dozens of countries--has raised questions over how the small island nation will repay its debts. In the past when countries have been unable to pay off Chinese loans, they have made other kinds of concessions, such as leasing local ports to the Asian superpower. Now, observers wonder if Vanuatu could be on a similar trajectory.

A land that is full of resources and has the potential to be one of the best Pacific Island countries will attract more advanced nations to dig in. Government is in a better position on deciding what's best for their own country rather than letting another decide what's best for their own.

Heard about Vanuatu for the first time when my company's partner proposed that we start promoting Vanuatu's "Citizenship Investment". At first I thought the idea of selling citizenship of a faraway island is unheard of and nobody would be interested. Realized later that if they're putting citizenship up for sale, that means anyone with huge funds can eventually buy and own a lot of property there despite never going there in person. The islanders who live a simple life will be more and more constrained if this get out of hand.

Im so sad to watch this. The vanuatu people are the nicest people on earth. My husband and I got married in vanuatu in 2017 in Port villa and went back to visit again in January 2020 for our anniversary because we loved their country and way of life so much. The changes the country has endured in that time is crazy and also so sad. I hope the leaders put an end to it and let the vanuatu people live as they have always lived.

This comment section is disgusting. People saying how poor Vanuatu is and how bad the crime rate is... You flops obviously haven’t been there because they are literally the most kind and genuine people I have had the pleasure of being around. Them being poor but also being happy and respectable people makes you all look grubby and pathetic by saying that they’re fools for letting China take over and how the country will be under Indonesian control. You should be disgusted in yourselves. The Ni-vanuatu are people just like everyone other ethnic group in this world and they are good humans at that, they deserve to have their country to themselves without any outside influence. Leave them be.

8 The God of Israel is different from the god of the Arabs around Israel. And our God is different from the god of the churches which are around us. And these Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, and all those that you see around us, they are Iraqis, Jordanians, Lebanese, Syrians, Pakistanis and Arabs around us. Israel, it is the valley of the prophets and a son of God follows a living prophet because the prophet is the mouth of God on earth. The Bible is the book of the books of the prophets and a child of God cannot live outside of a living prophet. [Ed: The congregation says, “Amen!”]. [Kc.114v20] 9 Put these things into practice and I say that those spirits that you took from them in the past will be sent back to them. And in the Name of Jesus-Christ, it will be so! Have a mastery of this subject: "the transfer of spirits". Burn those false bibles and the devil will know that he has no portion with you. Let those men know that you are not in the same dimension. 6 During my last open-air preaching which goes back to early 2004, I was seized by the collars before that furious crowd, the board on which I noted the verses had been broken in small pieces, and they nearly threw us into the lagoon. At their head was a Baptist pastor. Several brethren were there. Brigands with earrings, some Catholics, some Protestants and evangelicals, others under the anointing… Even policemen who should spare us excited the crowd against us. My megaphone was taken for the third time but the Grace of God prevailed and we left alive. And it is always that way…

The will of God for your salvation is not what your family or everyone else does around you, but it is what the living prophet of your time tells you. You were born alone and be aware that one day, you will die alone and also, you will go to judgment before God alone. Neither your father nor an pastor , or anyone else will answer for you. But God who is just will send a prophet in your lifetime, to show you the way to heaven, just as before you, He also sent prophets to show the way to heaven to generations before you. #PropheteKacouPhilippe
