My maternal grandfather was one of the earliest batches of Railway drivers (now loco pilots) who were selected for ALCO WDM2 conversion from steam back in early 1960s. He liked the transition from steam (incredibly taxing physical job) to diesel, but he used to say there was nothing to beat a fully charged up steam loco, it was also much more heavy and stable on the axles.He would have loved to see the new cab design of this WDP4

@@vish3161 My grandfather wasn't an engineer, but his words were borne out of hard toil, grease, sweat and sometimes blood. So, I'd take his word for it .He survived sabotage blasts on train tracks on occasions and used to say the steam locos took the impacts quite well . If it were a more modern diesel (WDM2) it would have surely derailed.

@@theacechip I respect your grandfather and I grew up in the Steam era and Iam an engineer by profession. Steam locomotives are nostalgic yes, but to compare their stability with today's locomotives is simply not correct. Steam engines have heavy reciprocating parts ( pistons , connecting rods etc ) and these create unbalanced vibrations that limit their stability. The faster they go, the more they vibrate and have more of a tendency to derail and wear out the tracks. Diesel and Electric locomotives are driven by rotary electric motors whose torque is uniform and there are no reciprocating masses ( the diesel loco does have a diesel engine, but that runs at a constant speed and it is easier to balance it for that speed and also the engine is above the suspension which damp out any vibration unlike steamers whose vibrations were at wheel level and so directly transferred to the tracks. The most stable locomotive in the IR is the diminutive WAP-5 that weighs around 78 tons . It has a two stage suspension and even the traction motors are partly suspended, making it highly track friendly and stable. Little surprise that it hauls India's fastest locomotives. Stability being dependant on weight is a very faulty belief of 99% of Indians. It is the ratio of sprung to unsprung mass that determines stability ..

And let me tell you, I'm also dissatisfied by all Indian Airlines and the worst of all is Air India (you must've already guessed). Poor service, often late flights (it feels like India is one of the very few countries where planes are late), really bad waiting rooms and the worst fellow passengers of all, that's the experience I've had flying in India. I've been in Argentina, the UK and Australia but never have I ever suffered such a drastic low standard of travel. And I don't think I need to comment on bumpy and potholed Indian roads filled with reckless Indian driver.

We must really thank the loco pilots. That much noise can cause serious damage to the ear lobe. Their working conditions are not that great imagine you have to sit inside a hot iron box next to a giant diesel generator a full day in India s heat and with no air con and rest room.
