It also means that there is no garauntee of safety as a POW if returning to Russia would result in an execution. As such potentially the safest thing to do would be to volunteer to fight for the other side.

When you’re fighting a war, and you’re willing to take the most egregious criminals with the worst crimes as your soldiers, in the agreement that those criminals get to return to society with a clean record after six months…you’re not fighting for the longevity of your nation. It was the soldiers that started running away. Now back to answer your question like for like. Ukraine use conscript as fodders. This was evident and I heard some captured conscript tell their story. Some had a limited 4 days training while others had within a week to a month. The assault brigades attack a Russian formation, storms and secures it and hands over the secured positions to these conscripts to defend. Russians assault group will storm it again and retake it
