Hahah, that's a pretty hilarious idea! You could do that with NFC tags, but then the person trying to read it would need to be only a few inches away. I don't think that there are genuinely many, if any, people out there trying to read your wallet, to be honest. Plus the chip is an EMV chip, which means they would need a specific type of EMV chip reader. The encryption level on credit cards, along with the complex algorithms makes it almost impossible to gain anything. The biggest problem would be hackers putting a fake credit card reader over a genuine one, like in this link below. www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-spot-and-avoid-credit-card-skimmers But, if it becomes possibly one day to encode a URL on an UHF RFID tag like that, I'll let you know for sure! Thanks for the comment! There are a few different ways to go about this, but it would begin with outfitting the shelves with RFID hardware like a reader and RFID antennas and tagging each product with an RFID tag. The amount of RFID hardware would simply depend on the amount of shelves you are looking to turn into smart shelves. Thanks for the question, can you be more specific? Are you asking about if you can have the same EPC code on two different tags? If so, that's completely possible, although it wouldn't help you identify one tagged item from another. If you are asking if you can rewrite an EPC number at any point, absolutely. You can easily rewrite an EPC number hundreds of times if the tag is unlocked. Let me know if this answers your question!

Brad, Haha, I wish I knew! My best guess is that they create a custom number or code and then lock the tag so no one can read it without that lock key. The lock key could be any number of digits so the possibilities are pretty endless. I'm sure since it's universal studios, they also have some sort of encryption for the code as well. Hi, yes labels can mostly be placed on almost any surface but its important to take the type of surface into consideration. Some labels will not be able to mount on metal or glass, while others are made specially to do so. Great question! So the amount of data that can be stored in an RFID tag all depends on the IC/Integrated Circuit/Chipset. Some IC's have 32-bits, some have 256-bits, etc., each one is a little different. A manufacturer chooses an IC and then chooses a tag antenna (which affects read range) to make a completed RFID tag. It's sort of like a computer setup, with a laptop and a connected monitor. There are hundreds of types of laptops and hundreds of types of monitors - so each combination will be a little different. An average tag memory bank size is 96 bits, which equates to 32 hexadecimal characters OR 12 ASCII characters. If you are confused here - this is a great article to walk you through that - www.atlasrfidstore.com/rfid-insider/encoding-rfid-tags-3-things-to-know . If you want to browse different sizes of the most common IC's - I have a comparison guide you can look at here - www.atlasrfidstore.com/chip-comparison-guide . In terms of range, I'm not sure if you mean the tag's antenna (tag read range) or the RFID antenna in the RFID system. Tags really vary in terms of tag read range, depending on the size of the tag's antenna. Larger the tag (tag antenna), longer the read range is a good principle. Some larger tags like Smartrac's Dogbone, can easily get 20+ feet, while small tags like Xerafy's Dash will only receive a few inches at best. If you mean the RFID antenna's read range, that's mostly based on the RFID reader used and the RFID tag used. How much range were you hoping to get with a system?

Ashok, Yes you absolutely can - depending on size of the box and size of the RFID tags. Reading multiple RFID tags all at once in a specific space is exactly what RFID is used for, especially in applications like Inventory Management and Asset Tracking. Niz, Seems like your applications would be best suited for NFC RFID so that your customers can use their smartphones (see eligible smartphones in this article: #9 - www.atlasrfidstore.com/rfid-insider/nfc-facts) to read the tags. For your application, I think the best way would be to have an NFC tag on the basket that is encoded with a specific URL that is password protected. Upon purchasing, each buyer receives a unique password, say XXXX, and when the buyer taps the NFC tag with their smartphone, the URL is opened. At that point, the buyer enters the password they received when they purchased and are able to login. Once the unique password is input by the buyer, perhaps you can setup your software to take some action (i.e. send an email, send a message) that the user with the password XXXX has received their basket. I suggest you read a lot about the ins and outs of NFC before purchasing anything so that you can completely understand what is possible with the technology. Maryem, Some tags can function in very cold temperatures - such as these tags that can be used in -50° C (www.atlasrfidstore.com/embeddable-rfid-wire-tag/), but generally most RFID tags are suggested to be in temperatures only as low as -40°C. There might be other available specialty tags that can operate at temperatures lower than -50°C, but they wouldn't be as thin as the labels in this video. They would most likely be larger with some sort of plastic encasing in order to survive in a freezer. Does that answer your question?

Bernardo, Great question! So all RFID readers can read the TID, but it depends on the reader and the software if it can display the TID number instead of the EPC number. For example, for the USB Pro Reader and the URA Demo Software you can read the TID on each tag if you read one at a time but you cannot read a handful or do inventory and only see the TID numbers and not the EPC numbers. Most demo software is like that. However, if you use an Impinj RFID Reader and the Speedway Connect software, you can change the settings so that when you read the tags, the software displays both the EPC and the TID numbers together. Impinj readers have a functionality called "FastID" which essentially helps Monza tags (Impinj's chipset) respond with their TID numbers faster than other tags. I am trying to program an RFID to tell me the distance between the receiver and the tag and then input the distance into an Arduino board, is that something possible. if it is what tag and reader should i use.

Omar, I don't think that is possible because the reader and tag are not able to calculate distance. However, the reader calculates an RSSI value each time it reads an RFID tag which could be used to roughly calculate distance if you assigned certain RSSI values (or ranges of values) a distance, based heavily on testing. For example, if you read an RFID tag with a reader and were able to get a value of -40 (very close range RSSI value) you could use software to assign a -40 value with '1 foot or less' based on your tag's position during testing when your reader received that RSSI value. So every time your reader received a tag RSSI value of -40, your software would show you that that tag is within '1 foot or less range'. It would take al ot of testing and software to assign distance values to those RSSI values, but that's the best way i can think of to try to calculate distance between the tag and the reader. If you had more than one RFID system or RFID antenna in the area, you could use triangulation between the RSSI values to try to more accurately determine the location of the tag. Achintha, RFID tags are not considered an effective way of measuring voltage differences on a material, but are primarily used for product identification and tracking. Daoud, A barcode printer could definitely be able to generate barcodes and you could set the printer software to generate different numbers. Are you saying that you want a label with integrated RFID tag but a barcode visually printed on the tag? You can definitely do this. Laurie, RFID tags typically do not blink because that would require a lot of energy. The only RFID tags that have a battery are Active RFID tags which are usually about half the size of a smartphone, but thicker. Tags are usually similar to this - www.atlasrfidstore.com/smartrac-r6-dogbone-rfid-wet-inlay-monza-r6/ - and are thin pieces of plastic that you could easily put in a wallet. Can you show me the tag you are looking at and tell me what problem you are trying to solve?

It really depends on the tag - below I've linked to an article specifically about the memory banks in tags and what you can expect. There are definitely high-memory tags that can be used to store more data than the typical 64 or 96 bit limit. Most of the time, people choose to use the low-memory tags and then associate any/all data on the back-end in a database. In a database you could have a table referencing the tag ID, and other tables capturing almost as much information as you care to capture (depending on software design, of course). For example, Tag 6854658961554 can be associated with "Steel Pipe number 45", which has been "recently inspected and cleaned on 6/20/2018". This pipe will be "due to be reinspected on 6/20/2019." Jensen, Technically, this can be done, however, it requires a more complex software and algorithms. It can be done by measuring the RSSI which is the Received Signal Strength Indicator, or done using multilateration between three antennas using RSSI or another indicator like possibly round trip time (RTT) or time of flight (TOF) for instance. Hang, I think that the answer to your question is binary bits, the RFID tag 'backscatters' bits to the RFID reader, which reads them, and translates that information typically in hexadecimal. Usually not, because if you look at what a sensor is defined as, it typically is something that detects and measures changes in the environment - so like motion, temperature, humidity, that sort of information. Question: I am looking at developing a system for my work where I can place a RFID chip (Preferably in say a 3D printed plastic chit or "tag") and need it to store some fields such as: Operator Name, Date, Time, Asset ID, and a couple more misc fields. I need to be able to write multiple times to these chips maybe once a month as the Operator performs maintenance. I would also need the operator to read the RFID unit to see when the unit was last serviced for instance. I'm very new to RFID's and would love a pointer as to what type of very entry level writer/reader would accomplish this. I'm self funding this as a side project for my work. thank you!

There are various different types of memory in UHF RFID tags, and each type of memory bank serves a different purpose. Please take a look at a blog post that discusses the types of memory in UHF Passive RFID tags: blog.atlasrfidstore.com/types-of-memory-in-gen-2-uhf-rfid-tags While it is possible to continually update and encode new information to an RFID tag, most applications use a database and reference number instead. Depending on the RFID tag that you are using, you might have enough memory space to encode the operator name, date, time, and asset ID to the RFID tag. However, most systems would simply encode a unique ID to the RFID tag and have that unique ID represent all of the needed information in an external database. For example, instead of encoding the RFID tag with the operator name, date, time, and asset ID, you could encode “00000001” to the RFID tag. Then, through software programming, you can perform an association between tag 00000001 and all of the needed information in your external database. However, there are high memory tags that can host over 1k bits of memory if your application requires that data is stored directly on the RFID tag. Almost all of our UHF Passive RFID readers have the ability to encode data to a UHF Passive RFID tag. For testing purposes, you’ll may want to start with a low-cost, USB reader and a sample pack of RFID tags. If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Gaargusha, this would be possible, but each doorway on a train would need to be outfitted with an RFID reader and antenna to scan those RFID tags or RFID badges upon entering the train. Each RFID badge that has priority seating would be specially encoded with a specific encoding scheme and when a number encoded that way is read by the RFID reader, the software would then tell the annunciator to sound. Does that make sense?

Never explains how to put tags in bulk of boxes, and read it..it must has failed reading..

We completely agree! We just rewatched this video (from 2018) the other day and it was WAY too long. We are going to add some short videos to the channel soon all about reading the writing. Any specific readers/tags you are wanting to learn about?
