@@economicprisoner Yeah when I used to hike in bad conditions we had a overlay type of garment. It used to not only go over the body, but covered the rucksack as well to stop water. It was really thin. It does not seem implausible to issue one in green/brown and one in white. They packed down to no larger a 6 inch sub from a sandwich shop. But hey, ruzzia, right???

Most likely the soldiers are taught to only do exactly as they are told. Thinking is something for officers. So in the soldiers head, taking off the issued gear isnt a possibility. Even when I was in the US Army we would get punished pretty harshly if we took off a piece of gear without being ordered to, even if that piece of gear was a problem for what we were supposed to be doing. Many times the gear is considered more important than the soldier by command

Shades of the Soviet Union. Every decision is made at the top by someone who's 500 miles away. That someone is very probably inept on a good day. In the 70s there was a good article in a US farm magazine on why the Soviet Union couldn't feed itself. Every activity was remote micromanaged from Moscow. They plowed when they were told, planted whatever they were told whether it made sense or not. The best part was the Moscow brain trust ordering machinery to the fields of mud and within minutes they'd be stuck up to the axles. But Moscow never learned a single lesson, that's why they had to buy grain from the USA until the late 80s. They had far more ag land than the US but no competence to make use of it.

Individual Russian soldiers likely don't know or care what is happening beyond a kilometer in any direction, they are too busy just trying to stay alive and avoid the drone swarm that is constantly overhead. It´s interesting how the change in the weather condition helped the Ukraines in fighting the colums of russian assaults. Black clothing in white winter situatios was bad for the Russians and by changing to white camouflage the weather changed and the Russians could then easily be spotted over the dark brown ground. Ruzzian warplanes not only shoot and drop bombs very well, but also shoot each other and have such amazing skill that an orc pilot shot down a top-secret protoype orc drone so that landed safely as a gift to the UAF, who graciously accepted it and carried it home to analyze how the electronic warfare system works.
