I’m from Panamá, born (88) and raised. My mom and both her parents worked at the canal. It paid so handsomely, especially back in that time in Panamá.

After helping the panamanian rebels US also screw them too by taking control of the canal zone for Indfinite time by the notorious Hay-Bunau-Varilla treaty which was written in very misleading way to favour US control over the canal

A unique feat of engineering. Yet very simple. Boats float on water, how to level each lock, flood each lock with water and it levels with the other locks and eventually with the other ocean. Reverse it if going in the other direction. A severe drought would be catastrophic, though.

It is my understanding that in order to pass through the canal way in either direction, you must coordinate and gain permission by working with a private firm that controls all the activities.
