I saw Robert as King Arthur in Camelot in the late '90s. He was fabulous, but of course, when it came time for this song, I so wanted to hear him sing it instead of the fellow who was playing Lancelot. I was delighted when, after the play was finished, Robert came out onstage and sang "If Ever I Would Leave You." What a thrill!! I'll never forget it.

True story. My folks went to see Camelot in Boston. After the performance, they ran into then Senator John F. Kennedy in the hallway of their hotel. Never a shrinking violet, my Mom, while talking with the Senator in the elevator, told him how handsome he was - "but could never hold a candle to Robert Goulet - or sing as well." The Senator chuckled and agreed (he had seen Camelot). My Dad just tried to become part of the wallpaper. : )

His voice was unbelievable and hearing this brings tears to my eyes. In 1977 I was 18 and stopped in Las Vegas with my friends. We bought tickets to see Robert Goulet and they sat us at a table up front. You can't imagine my joy when he picked me out and sang "If Ever I Would Leave You" to me! I was brought up on the Camelot Broadway Cast Album and I used to play it while doing my chores when I was growing up. That song is still my favorite from that album. Oh, and he kissed my hand! My friends still make fun of me because I was so shy and embarrassed, I almost fainted on the spot! Thank you for posting this.

I had a friend who set up a bubble bath in the back of his house in the black ghetto of Boston, a small table on either side of the tub, on them, a .38 and a .45. In the windows of his house, he had "If ever I would leave you" playing on a 900 watt stereo with the speakers aimed out into the ghetto as he relaxed naked in the tub, the ghetto reverberating with Lerner and Lowe.... He was waiting, just to find out who would go back there and tell him to turn the music down!

If ever I would leave you It wouldn't be in summer. Seeing you in summer I never would go. Your hair streaked with sunlight, Your lips red as flame, Your face with a lustre That puts gold to shame! But if I'd ever leave you, It couldn't be in autumn. How I'd leave in autumn I never will know. I've seen how you sparkle When fall nips the air. I know you in autumn And I must be there. And could I leave you Running merrily through the snow? Or on a wintry evening When you catch the fire's glow? If ever I would leave you, How could it be in springtime? Knowing how in spring I'm bewitched by you so? Oh, no! not in springtime! Summer, winter or fall! No, never could I leave you at all!

March 27, 1967 my twin sister and I received front row seats to see Robert Goulet--we were seniors in high school and in LOVE with this guy. I bet we listened to the Broadway musical album “Camelot” a thousand times. At one point he came to the edge of the stage, sat down in front of us and sang..to us. We were in HEAVEN! That voice, those blue eyes!

I have loved Robert Goulet's voice since I was a teen-ager in the 1960's. Living in the Deep South, I heard a lot of Country music, rock'n'roll and bluegrass, but the power and the purity of his delivery could not be denied. He made the lyrics come alive! And what a song! The words bring tears to my eyes and make my heart swell with emotion because they are so real and so true for me. I would not want to live without my wonderful wife of 46 years.

Thank you for posting this, Vera. Few people would know from this how difficult this song is to sing. Believe me, as a baritone who had to sing this at a wedding reception in the 70's it's full of pitfalls for the singer. Robert negotiates each phrase with his usual aplomb.

By some quirk, I decided to listen to the original cast of "Camelot" at work today. When "If Ever I Would Leave You" played, I hoped that there would be no intrusion that would require me to remove my earbuds and stop listening. I was overcome with emotion and brought to tears hearing Mr. Goulet sing this again. A flood of memories hit me: the purity of his voice, and the yearning he expressed; the time in the early '60's during which musicals of this type were well received; the hopes for the future, as my generation looked forward to the "new frontier." It is amazing what music can evoke, and this performance never fails to stir my feelings and quicken my heartbeat. Thank you so very much for making this video accessible to those who never had the chance to see Robert perform, as well as those of us who cherish his talents.

When we listen to something like this we sometimes forget to give due credit to the composer, the lyricist and even the director, all of whom deserve a ton. No Broadway star who was showcased in a Lerner and Lowe vehicle, ever needed to make lemon-aide out of lemons. No, this was the nectar of the Gods, poured before them. Goulet, Andrews and Burton made the most of it, to be sure, but the material was sitting right on the pages they received. Andrews was twice blessed, of course.

I had to get my fix! Such a magnificent voice! He puts the rat pack to shame! My father had a lovely voice with a broad range, too. When he went into the marines, as service was mandated in those days, he was part of a barbershop quartet. He wanted to fight in Korea, but his commander refused. There was a competition and only my father could sing the bass! He joked about it later, but it probably saved his life. So now I say thank you to Robert , as he was such an inspiration. Yep, this song will always belong to Mr. Goulet. No one does it like him, and he'll also forever be the original Lancelot on stage. Just picked up a 1966 movie called "I Deal in Danger" starring Robert Goulet as an Allied spy in Nazi Germany during WWII. Pretty good. I found out it was the first four episodes of the TV series "Blue Light" which were strung together and released theatrically. They sometimes did that, such as with various "Man from UNCLE" episodes put together and released as a movie. Also, don't miss Mr. Goulet co-starring with fellow crooner Andy Williams in "I'd Rather Be Rich" (1964), which also starred Sandra Dee and Maurice Chevalier. Bob and Andy duet on the title tune, while Andy sings his hit "Almost There" to Sandra Dee while driving up to a mountain cabin. Typical fluff, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Hello Vera! I hope you are reading this. I'm a 19-year-old university student from the UK. I discovered your husband several months ago and he has become one of my favourite singers. Thank you ever so much for putting his music on KZbin for us all to enjoy. I can safely say that Robert Goulet is one of my heroes, and I would love to be as great a singer as he was one day. He was definitely one of the most underrated artists in history. I think he was in the same league as Tom Jones, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash and other 20th-century greats. Alone in my dorm room, feeling friendless, miserable and pining over an unrequited love for a girl, I spent much of my time listening obsessively to music - your husband's among them. I probably listen to this particular song more than I should, since it reminds me of the girl in question - but it's too good, I can't help it! I am so upset that he is no longer here with us today, as I would have loved to meet him in person and maybe even get an autograph! I hope you will continue to provide us with your husband's stunning work, and I would love to meet you one day and talk about this legend!

Loved watching this. They don't make musicals like this any more. I read that when Robert showed up for his audition, he showed up in blue jeans. The production staff was taken by his voice, youth & casual style & that landed him the role. And of course it afford him the opportunity to work with two greats...Julie Andrews & Richard Burton, not to mention former child star Roddy McDowell.

Beautiful rendition. If only humanity could produce more beautiful things like this than the hatred spewed by few but spread by the media.

Yes , Robert Goulet owns this song and made it a timeless work of art. Incredible voice but I still hold on to those memories of him doing comedy bits in the 60's and 70's and let me attest for those who didn't see them, he was equally adept at evoking a smile and a belly laugh because Robert had the innate ability of making you feel you were right there with him and in on it instead of viewing his performance from a distance . .

So, I was driving home from my yoga studio today after teaching. I had the 60's station on when a Robert Goulet song came on. He was singing parts of the song in Italian, so I thought when I got home I would google his name to see if he had an Italian ancestry. After his bio I went to you tube and found this song. Incredible! I listened to it here, I listened to him on Johnny Carson. I watched him sing it to Julie Andrews, then to Julie Garland. Truthfully I don't know how he could sing this song to any lady, and not have them fall in love with him immediately. I don't know how one could sing this song without crying. I never got to see him in Camelot, I'm sure this song stole the show. Vera, keep his flag flying! You're the passion behind the voice.

I worked with Robert Goulet and his voice was absolutely captivating . And this is coming from a person that is not into singers in general.

The very first song I ever sang publicly. It was well received and I have sung this song many many times since and I've loved singing it each time. But no one anywhere sings it like Robert Goulet
