For the past 15 years I’ve been putting graphite (pencil lead) in the nut slots before changing the strings. I do this with acoustics too and I NEVER HAVE TUNING ISSUES. Nut sauce is another option but it is expensive and it doesnt perform as good as graphite in my opinion. Tuning your G string up would also help like the video suggests. I’m just trying to help people.

If it,s just been restrung or the strings loosened for laying up in the case then the string could just be settling, that might just be me because i always wind my first turn over the string and then go under which solves any tuning problems other than a bad nut but can lead to string breakage.

I sent mine to Gibson and when I got it back it played like a different guitar. They redid the set up and said the action was too high causing intonation and tuning stability issues. The action is really low now as LP's are suppose to be... It's rock solid now and sounds so much better and plays like butter. I love it again when before I was about to sell it. They included a spec sheet with their recommendation set up and string gauge etc.

Another thing to check out is the angle of the groove on the nut. If it's straight parallel to the neck, it doesn't stay in tune as well. In contrast, having the slot cut at an angle towards the tuner can help. I replaced the brass zero fret on my 2015 LP Studio with a TUSQ zero fret with angled grooves from Graph Tech and my tuning stability massively improved.

Dang I've been winding up my entire life and I just assumed everyone did that. And amazingly my guitars always stayed in tune. And, when I'm tuning any given string, I tune UP to the note. If you go past the note, bring it back below and pick the note as you raise the pitch until it's dialed in.
@arthurblackhistoric
@arthurblackhistoric 3 жыл бұрын
And that exact issue is the whole problem with robot tuners. They tune down to pitch if the string is too sharp. We MUST allow for the contractile property of the string by lowering the pitch below correct tuning and then bring it back up.
@snap-off5383
@snap-off5383 2 жыл бұрын
and tune the LOUD part of the note, not the faded off parts, because strings go flat as they lose energy. That insight made my tuning sound so much better, tune the beginning of the note, play it as hard as you would at your max forte parts, and hit it over and over, tuning that part of the note each time. Crystalline perfect tuning.
@alabamahebrew
@alabamahebrew 3 жыл бұрын
All you have to do to permanently fix that issue is to take a small file and run in through the G string nut slot and put a slight angle on the outgoing side towards that tuner peg and you won't have the issue again.

Good pointer! Now....what if you have locking tuners? Try this......before restringing, take the D string (wound) and run it into the slot for the G string on the nut. Many nuts are cut too shallow or are just tight enough to cause the G to bind. Run it through a few times to just barely open the slot. Don’t use a file unless you know what you’re doing!! It’s very easy to cut too deep with a file and then you are going to need to replace the nut. Now.....because the binding issue is normally caused by the lateral break angle instead of a vertical one, you may need to pull that D string in the G slot while pulling it down at the same angle it tracks to the tuning peg. That will ease the opening edge of the nut where the G string meets the nut and then breaks at an angle to the post. Apply some nut lube.....restring.....and test it out. That has worked on my Gibsons and I rarely have tuning issues anymore.
@markpell8979

Ditto on all points, Christopher. I also have used the tricks for decades of using old wound strings as 'flexible rotary nut slot files' and lubing the slots with a little graphite. My Les Pauls and Specials stay in tune with absolutely no problems.

When I purchased it new in 2006, I found the truss rod nut to be almost maxed out. It's still my, 'go to' guitar so nothing has come of the issue. Either way as that's anecdotal, they did hit a rough patch in the 2010's with quality as many companies do. I think we've elevated the brand to god-like status so any human error is called out much more so than other brands. But after all these years, Gibson still remains the most affordable made in the USA brand(for mass production brands). I live not far from their factory so I purchased direct which saves me some cash. Keep rocking that Gibson loud!(with a British Marshall of course)

The other cool thing about my new Tele (Fender Ultra) is that it stays in tune very well...not used to that since I've played nothing but Les Pauls for the last 25 years lol.

I’ve always had that tuning problem with my Les Pauls, but I’d never part with any of them. Thank you so much for the tip, I’ll string G, B, and E up from now on! 😎👍

I have always wound the G string on Les Paul, ES and SG guitars above the tuning peg hole and this has helped tuning stability on that string. You can also replace the Nylon or Graphtec nut with a bone nut and get a good tech to file the slots at an angle to match the angle that the strings travel to the tuning peg.

Also, raise the stop bar (tailpiece) up so that the break angle is the minimum needed for a clear note. Or use the tailpiece in the wrap over style. I prefer to raise the tailpiece myself. It does NOT impact the tone in particularly bad way, but it does make it way easier to play in tune. My Gibson went from not getting through a song to playing whole sets without touching the tuners. I started making that adjustment the first thing I do setting up customer guitars and I’ve had great results and reports over the last 10 years. I was aware of it before that, but I really didn’t get how crucial it was till I went from all Fender and Ibanez to getting my first SG.

Tw25b military gun grease. Slots and saddles. My Gibson’s hold tune almost as well as my Floyd equipped guitars. I also use TP6 tailpiece. I don’t know how much the TP6 factors in. But the Tw25b is a miracle. Also, you could put a string tree through your top truss Rod cover hole. I put a graph tech string tree on my ESP just to experiment. Works great and creates a straight string pull. But it’s not necessary if you use the Tw25b. I discovered accidentally. I ran out of nut lube, so I looked around the house for other lubes. I remembered this killer lube a buddy gave me for firearms. It even comes in a syringe with a needle point applicator. It’s kind of expensive. But it’s a miracle. And it stays put too because it’s a grease. It’s a white grease and only takes a tiny bit. Your welcome 👊🏻 Put some on your KM Robert! Don’t over complicate it🤘🏻

I've been up winding for a while and it works. My less paul with a roller bridge and bone nut is always in tune unless it a massive temperature change and then I usually have to give each string a little bend and it's back in tune with a little stretch.

Very interesting. I have a 2019 Gibby LP Classic that I installed locking tuners on. I've notice its tuning stability has gotten worse. Upon examination, I noticed the new tuners lowered the breaking angle a bit. Probably the problem. After watching this, I'm going to put the original tuners back on and wind up and see what happens. I'm also thinking about having the nut replaced with a bone nut properly cut. Thanks for doing this video.

I put a rolling bridge, locking tuners and a string butler on my Tribute LP, which had very poor tuning stability, and now is olid as a rock. Not sure if it was the rolling bridge, the locking tuners or the string butler, or the combination of the 3, but the improvement is insane. From losing tuning after a couple of bends to keep it for even weeks.

I wanted to thank you. I just got a wonderful little Epi Nighthawk. I noticed it has the G string issue: not pinching in the nut, but still a slight issue. Then, I remembered what I watched the night before on this video. Loosened the G string and rewrapped it going up. Problem solved!

Something I found when tuning up: Let each tuner adjustment settle in. It can take a few seconds for the tension to even out on each side of the nut.

On my '74 LP Custom, same issue when I bought it in 85. Fixed the issue by winding up w 3 wraps on G, B,E ...AND putting Chapstick as a lube packed in the nut slots after stretching and in tune ( brass nut on mine). I've wailed on the strings - including extensive pulls above the nut all-night on stage without ill effects on tuning.

I make sure the nut is right. I install a roller bridge (mostly to reduce the string from binding on the tune-o-matic bridge and reducing string breakage). And I wind the strings on the first two tuning keys down, the two second row, farther away from the nut, half down and half above the tuning peg. And the two tuning keys farthest away from the nut above the hole, toward the top of the shaft to reduce the break angle and my Les Paul's always stay in tune unless there's a sharp temperature change. Now I see from your video that maybe just the unwound strings need to be wound above the insert hole. But hay, it's been working for me so far. The farther away from the nut you get, the stepper the break angle, this was my reasoning. The funny thing was, I figured this out on my own buy examining the possible reasons for my tuning issues. This is the first time that I've heard others discuss this method of adjusting for the Gibson break angle issue.

Lube in the nut makes a huge difference. I always switch to locking tuners but not because that helps tuning-it does not, but just for fast string changes.

I own my first Les Paul now with a GraphTec nut and its a massive improvement over older nuts. The G doesn't get caught in the nut and you never hear that "tink* anymore. When you showed that close up I noticed not only were the strings wound UP as you said but I could see the strings cross threaded a bit over itself... its been my experience that causing tuning issues as the string isn't solidly wrapped on and around the post itself

Robert, I can help you with your, let's call it "number of wraps consistency" on each peg. A tip also passed down by a bench tech so I'll happily share it here: When I put my new string through the nut slot and through the peg hole, I turn the tuner knob to align the hole almost, but not quite, straight with the nut slot. In other words, the string should only have enough side angle break so that it stays put when I pull it hand tight through the nut and peg hole. I test it by pulling the string's free end and letting go gently to see if the string stays put or retracts towards the bridge. If it retracts towards the bridge when I let go, I add SLIGHTLY more angle to the tuning peg until it will hold itself. From this point, I grab the string at the point where it passes through the nut slot and hold onto it with 2 fingers. Then use my other hand to "push back" enough string through the peg hole so that my grabbed position, which WAS directly over the nut, is NOW directly over the first fret. From here, I fold or crease the string's free end, where it exits the peg hole, so as to effectively set the maximum length the string can possibly go. Next, I wrap, stretch and tune the string as normal. Done. I always end up with 2-3 rounds on the wound strings on the bass side and 3-4 rounds on the unwound treble side every single time. I've restrung dozens of guitars for many years using this method and it ALWAYS works for me. Hope it helps you and maybe some of your viewers. Peace~

I use one wrap under then a few over. No issues on my LP. I think the nut is ore likely the problem for most tuning issues. As you say, by winding up you are making the break angle less steep so binding in the nut is less likely. I always put a little bit of graphite (use a sharp penicil) in each nut slot when I change strings for a bit of lube. Some great riffing there sir. I’ll be stealing some of that!
