If you've got X3 Albion Prelude or possibly Terran Conflict, you should also have a free copy of X3 Farnham's Legend which improves a fair bit.

@@shelbyvillemusica X3FL seemed pretty good even at launch. I haven't noticed it being any buggier than X3AP... although my most recent game does seem to crash quite often, I think I it's a dependency issue that can be fixed.

Edit: For posterity: I bound my forward thumb mouse button to 'match speed' and my back thumb button to 'full stop'. Helps me a bunch. Tab for full speed, thumb forward to match, and thumb back to stop. Don't have to reach for backspace or any other keys. Used to be that slamming face-first into an asteroid at 10km/s would blow your ship up, and the AI aimed for asteroids. Now it only drains your shields fully. Not realistic in the slightest, but good change anyway imo. The autopilot is a lot better at avoiding roids.

Why is this not realistic? It's more unrealistic that your shield blocks lasers and missiles, but can't block a stationary asteroid... That's like you telling me that someone shooting you with a rifle is less damaging than you running at full speed into a wall.

​@@yunsha9986 It means that you cannot take hull damage from collisions, even if you slam into something at full speed without shields installed. I do appreciate the change, though. Autopilot does not handle 14 km/s travel speeds well. (Upgraded scout ships get silly)

Station building can seem daunting, but once you understand a few basic fundamentals it becomes a lot less perplexing

I recently bought the game. I played a lot and bought my first destroyer to than find out ships with more seats than one are really the fastest of them all since you can command your captain to fly somewhere and than sit somewhere that is not the pilot's seat and activate seta while he does travel mode. It's really nice.

@@fellen_ Hmm a bit of both imo, It adds more places, more ships and even some mechanics but what they add for newer player are different starting stories/characters, some of them are alot more tutorialized than the base game ones which can help a lot to new players.

I'm an old git too. 63!! Played Dave Brabens Frontier: Elite II back in the early 90's on my Amiga. Till I went to PC and found X2. And that was it. I was hooked on the X series. But as I'm old and there's a crap load of key binds to remember, I have an A4 idiot sheet in front of me with all the used keys and it's divided into sections. *Ship Controls. Weapons. Target management. Misc. Travel Modes. Camera Views* *_(And listed camera number pad movements!)._* *And Map Viewing.* I'll leave this game for a few months, November was my last time, but when I come back to it, I can't remember what any keys did. So my idiot sheet is a must for me.

I love this game. I kinda use it as a space truck simulator where I just have one freighter and just buy and sell goods. Not the smartest way to play though since the sandbox kind of relies on the player a bit and without their influence the Xenon or Khaak will at some point overrun multiple systems.

That sounds fun, like you have no interest in war, but you're happy to supply stations for their war effort. Its a noble thing to do!

I've found that the 7.0 update stabilizes things so that the other factions aren't instantly overran. You can now find a quiet corner of the universe and just space truck to your heart's content with only minor pirate interruptions. This is due to the redesigned teladi and argon capital ships. The new E variants are much more in line with the later DLC ships which were much stronger in comparison. I would also suggest the Wayward Scion start which is newly added to 7.0. It's similar to the Young Gun start except for your starting location which is Grand Exchange 3, your starting ship which is a Nova instead of an Elite, and the fact that the hatikva trade plot starts activated and marked so you have easy guidance to a free second ship. The devs lamented the fact that most of the DLC starts have more new player guidance than all of the foundations starts and they wanted to add a guided style start to foundations to assist new players. IMHO wayward scion IS the new young gun lol

As someone who's X series of games for the last 3 decades now _(A scary thought! 2000's 2010's and now the 2020's!),_ when ever I play X4 now, I always start with the full map revealed. But nothing in the sectors. Only the revealed sectors themselves. My reasoning behind this is simple. _And logical._ This game is set 968 years into the future. 2992 AD to be precise. And just like your cars satnav, I'm pretty confident that if you bought a ship 968 years into the future, it would already have an updated map and navigation system already installed. But there are so many ways to play this game. Not only that, but on which side to play. Argon, Teladi, Pirate. And if you get some of the mods which have new sectors, that opens up a huge area for exploring and taking over. But I'm about to jump back into the game in the next couple days, so now I'm plotting who, what and where. Who am I going to be? What race and what will I want to do. And where am I going to start? I've even played a game where only pirates will trade with me. Everyone else hated me. That was going Ok till a load of Xenon rolled into my sector and took out my main source of income. Being a drugs dealer making cheap spaceweed. And then the Teladi started to like me! 8-))...

@@Rhadamant True. But if you had started your game via the *Custom Game Editor* *_(Creative.),_* you could have started off in 100% vanilla. Just as you did. Then you could toggle on or off what sectors are already found. But your game start would have been exactly the same as the Val Selton one. However, you'd just start in space, not in the station. But with exactly everything in the young gun start. Though you'd most likely have to change your ship to the default one.

Hehe, when Timelines came out, downloaded it within five seconds. Haven't played it yet because of Silent Hunter 3 Grey Wolves Expansion itch that came two days before midsummer that will carry me over to the end of June, but soon after will be uncorking X4 for this year as Canada celebrates my bd at the beginning of July. However nice to see no DLC gameplay. Been playing the same Young Gun save for couple of years now.
