Rhapsody 490 vs Gforce VSM

Well, you like the 610 (VSM) and not the 490. The 610 is the one used by Tangerine Dream, Jarre (Equinoxe) and John Foxx (Metamatic) but many people wrongly think all the Rhapsodies sound the same and even buy the cheaper underfeatured 490 when they are after the 610 sound!

Still one of the greats but rather than the VSM lets see it go against the SOLINA. I'm an Elka boy myself but I'm sure that would be a clash of the Titans. lol

The comparison does not make sense. The Rhapsody of VSM is the 610, which can never sound the same to a 490. Different Rhapsodies contain different circuits resulting in different sound!

if you say so ... but if you look closely there are not even of elka 610 ... www.gforcesoftware.com/products/vsmexpansionpack/original_instrument_videos But Gforce program name call "Elka Rhapsody"... Where is the sense ? do not looking for.

just got a rhapsody, is its cellos supposed to sound as a filtered as opposed to the strings? i was expecting the cellos to be an 8’ identical copy to the 4’ strings. but really the cellos aren’t much of an addition being used with the strings; rather making the strings sound way filtered too!

Indeed, the Rhapsodies 490 are made like that, with filtered sounds. Only the 610 will allow you to get the violins and cellos at the same time with a different octave.

I do not think the VSM is great. The Virtual String Machine does not sound very close to the ELKA 490 or even the 610 model. I purchased VSM when it was released (because I have a thing for analog string ensembles). It was a dissapointment from the start. I even complained directly to Gforce. The idea was good, but the sonic result not. Listen to the Logan sounds and the Roland RS-202. VSM does not even come close to those lush sounds from the originals. There are free VSt's on the marked now doing a better job than the VSM. And Arturias Solina V does a good job, although it is for one instrument only. Then again, it was maybe the best and most important of all string machines ever made in the seventhies.

I don't get this video content. Comparing apples and oranges. VSM has all kind of stuff which sounds as good as your Elka model plus it's going far far far beyond that. It's a string machine designers wet dream universe in version 3. The ensemble and the phaser as well as the filters sound awesomely good for a plugin too. So yes. All the way VSM :)

I fear that you have not understood. I compare what is comparable, call the apples or orange as you like, but I compare here a real elka rhapsody with an elka rhapsody vst, because it is not me who announces it but VSM and I find that this point of view, the job is not well done. Finally, whether it's elka or VSM, they won't do the music for you, that's for sure. Now, if you take a roland vp330 and compare it to the XILS LAB 505, there yes, there is excellent work.
