She also reminds me of the Norse goddess Freja, another cat goddess, as well as the Hindu goddess Durga who also rides a lion! And of course the Egyptians had cat goddesses such as Bast and Sekhmet. It's amazing how the association between cats and Goddess seems to span so many different countries and cultures.

I really like how even the Olympians had respect for Rhea, because if she had obeyed her husband they all wouldn't exist. Even ZUES understood this. I also think she would have approved of Hades and Persephone (then known as Kore before her marriage to her husband) since Hades treats Persophone with love and respect, their relationship was a healthy and functioning one. No affairs (I'm pretty sure) and Persephone actually enjoyed being with her husband.

Possibly not considering Rhea knows what it's like to have your child taken away from you by force. Neither her nor Demter were very happy with that and considering she helped Leto give birth despite Hera forbidding it all we can assume she doesn't care what her children think(Zeus and Hades' being the ones who agreed to this in this situation) if she doesn't find it right personally.

It wasn't really a kidnapping since that implies he did it without anyone else knowing. He went to Zeus(who was Persephone's father) and got his permission, then he showed up to take her as part of the courtship(that was how it worked in ancient Greece). They just forgot to tell Demeter about it.

Sad Reya is always minimized in who she was and how she saved her children she risked her life and not so much as a thank you mom or giving her the respect I think she more than earned, in a high throne seat, instead forgotten like she was nothing, it's sad and this is they're loving mother who'd of died for these kids that were gods but she's now nothing. Maybe she should of let Cronus swallow Zeus, less troubles.

Stephanie Honeycutt Women seem to left out or written out of HISStory alot. Even in prays. Most people always say father God my father and always forget about their true mother. Who actually birth earth. People need to start recognizing their Mom start searching for her and find out why HISStory wrote her out of her great deeds. I think we agree I'm hoping, we're just wording it differently. I think we'd both love to know her entire story. I believe it's a sad loss of wonderful stories. To me she and Gaia began life, Gaia is respected, why not Reya to, she was a goddess as well. If you ever find her complete story or a more detailed one I'd appreciate it if you'd share it with me, I'm loving this mythology.

She really is a somewhat unique character in Greek Myth: A character with NO negative stories and only positive ones. It seems she is respected as the reason the Olympians exist at all, yet she doesn't feature in stories beyond that, happily fading into the shadows. So it's interesting that she still shows up once in a while- almost like fans asked "hey, what happened to Rhea?" and storytellers were like "oh, um, she helped out Leto this one time".

I think you confused Chronus with Cronus (a common mistake). Cronus: King of the titans, and a god of the harvest. Chronus: Primordial god of time.

From what I've read in the Titanomackia in the aftermath of the war between the tirans and olympians Rhea was given the chance to stay aling with Hecate and other titans that aided the olympians. I want Rhea was chosen because not only was she the carrying mother that saved Zeus but also the rest of the olympians and Hecate was described almost like an aunt or nanny that helped raise Zeus into adulthood.

I have a pretty crazy theory regarding both Rhea, and Ma - another Anatolian goddess, who was likened to Kybele. I see both Ma and Rhea as very much aspects of the same goddess, and so in a sense both embody the Warrior Queen archetype. Goddess names with the root “mar” seem to have spread all across the ancient Mediterranean - even the great Khemetic mother goddess Isis picked up the name Mari, at some point. So my theory, is that since just before the Bronze Age many cultures around the Mediterranean viewed close stellar objects - Venus and the moon in particular - as being symbolic of “Sanctuary”, among other perhaps similar things. There’s a tale shared among many of those cultures, of a figure - usually female, but sometimes male - travelling each night to that sanctuary. Some of these cultures eventually believed that the sanctuary was a real place - an island, such as Crete. So naturally from this, evolved the idea of seeing that the journey to the sanctuary was by sea - and this probably passed on through generations to link sanctuary and the sea, themselves as being almost one and the same. So this goddess - personally I call her MaRhea - was seen as a heavenly queen, then a holder of sanctuary, and then eventually equated with the sea; and this definitely makes sense, when you consider “Maris” as the Latin root word for “sea”, and very similar words for “sea” in older languages. But the sanctuary was often vulnerable, and subject to invasions, and the sea itself had been seen as a major front on which invaders could arrive - that had obviously been the case since the middle of the Bronze Age. So then naturally, any goddess with these as her domain, had to be a protector too. So they made her a warrior goddess! And then from the same region, curiously enough, we got male gods of protection and war being named Ares, Mares, and Mars - surely that can’t just be coincidence! I’m not saying that every goddess of sea and war in the ancient Mediterranean has a single intrinsic link. But I would theorise that their naming scheme certainly seems to follow from the same story, carried over and over, making the same things important enough to be considered divine, across those ancient cultures - Sea, sanctuary, protection.

The problem is some people take it as a primary source of Greek mythology(being their only one because they assume its enough) and basing all interactions or mentions of Greek mytholgy on the books. God of War fans are the same. So it's great as an introduction to Greek myths but some people need to realize it's not very accurate sometimes and is essentially an author's version of Greek myths.
