Nonononono that is not pannukakku, that is a Finnish crepe called lettu. Pannukakku is made in the oven, even though pannukakku would translate to pancake if you were to just straight up translate it. It's confusing, but yeah that is not a Finnish pancake because those are made in the oven and they are thick, just like american pancakes. Pannukakku is made in an oven tray rather than a pan. You were right about us having pannukakku with that soup, but unfortunately that is not a pannukakku. Hernekeitto and pannukakku is a classic combo here that is also served every thursday in the Finnish military.

as a japanese school teacher...i'm confused about the japanese lunch. I have never been served just a bowl of konyaku like that....i don't think anyone eats just konyaku like that. I have been served many oden plates with konyaku mixed in but never just in a bowl of watery both alone.

I'm scotish and I've never seen salmon mayo on a menu in the country. We're not known for fruit and veg either. A Glasgow salad is chips and tomato sauce and is considered 2 of your 5 a day. A typical school lunch for me was a pizza crunch ( pizza battered and deep fried)., no joke.

Honestly, I love Konyaku. It's great in soups. I showed this to my partner is Japanese and I showed him this and he said "no, no, no. We don't just have a bowl of konyaku for lunch"

This thing served as dessert in the Finnish round is not pannukakku! This is lettu! Pannukakku is much thicker, like a pancake the size of an oven plate, and traditionally served as a dessert for pea soup, which you ate. Lettu is just crepes (but equally yummy)!

Agreed! They don't serve anything like that in Japan. What a disservice to Japan. I went to school in Japan, and NEVER once had I had anything like that in the cafeteria. They should have just served Japanese curry rice and daikon pickles on the side, which is a ubiquitous menu in Japanese schools. Also, konnyaku is a vegetable product, NOT made of tuna spine as Josh so confidently said. Disgusting!

Uuuuh Finn here. Hernekeitto does not have spinach in it, and that's a lettu, not a pannukakku. And we don't have carrots and beets with hernekeitto. If it's soup day it's basically the soup, some bread, and a glass of milk or water. Pannukakku is traditionally served with hernekeitto though, these dishes just didn't exactly match the real thing.
