Very cool episode! Alas... ASL wasn't made in America. We actually went over to the U.K. to ask them if we could learn their sign language, but they wanted monetary compensation. A French representative was there and offered to teach us for free, thus American Sign Language is actually French in origin. 😁
@karazenonos34942 жыл бұрын
was looking for this comment 👏🤟
@Cynthiaaagghh2 жыл бұрын
In all fairness, FSL merged with indigenous sign languages and home signs in America to become the ASL of back then, and then it has drastically changed over the centuries to become uniquely ASL. ASL as we know it today IS distinctly *American.* Also slight correction, but sign languages did already exist in the US at the time. Gallaudet went to Europe to learn about how to educate deaf children. Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc mainly helped establish schools for the deaf in the US, which then “standardized” sign language more and naturally gave it heavy French influence bc of Clerc.
@derailhaskins20442 жыл бұрын
@@Cynthiaaagghh I appreciate the clarity!! My son is deaf, and his teacher explained it to me in very rough terms! I knew sign had already existed, but I know they wanted a more unified language to teach, even though "dialects" as we would equate it to still make signs differ depending on which area you're in.
