It is clearly not a British origin dish. You can say it is a sign of how much the British food culture has been influenced by the culture of the colony/country of India and it's people - that they ruled for 200 years. The mere fact that they have taken so much of the cuisine's influence on and they love the dish enough to call it the dish of their nation shows how tasty Indian food is. The very words tikka and masala are Indian words, not words of English origin.
