When Q*Bert fell off the pyramid there was an electric “thumper” inside that would create a brief sound and a sensation throughout the wooden frame that made it seem as if Q*Bert had hit the bottom of the box inside. My favorite as a kid back then was “Battle Zone” - it was a three dimensional tank battle that you had to fight by out maneuvering the A.I. opponents. “Karate Champ” was another iconic game. Running out of quarters was awful … so to delay the inevitable you would just watch other people play. The Arcades always had the smell of warm T.V. tubes and circuit boards .. that warm electronics smell from all those machines being pushed to their graphical limits daily. Great memories from the 80’s !!

I still hit up arcades whenever I can. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, a lot of arcades now charge the flat fee, and that's not so great if you only have a short time to drop in and play a few games. But it's good to see all the retro arcades doing pretty well these days, regardless of their business model. Favorite games of all time: Ms. Pac Man, Galaga, Terminator 2, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Though I do love me many of the "deep classics" you mentioned in the video.

Oh, I remember the arcades back in the day. I was 18 in 1980 when I went to my first arcade, which was old enough to still have pinballs and pool tables. When video games really took off in the early 80s, I saw machines in grocery stores and even drug stores (the drug store in Ashville OH was where I first played Donkey Kong), and back then, some of the arcades, particularly the one I remember just inside of Circleville OH allowed smoking; not good when you could see some of those old machines with burn marks where people parked their cigarette while they played. Games I would suggest for a possible future installment would include Taito's Jungle Hunt, Midway's Sinistar (an early game that featured digitized speech ("RUN, COWARD!"), Berzerk (two people playing this one died during play!), Konami's Gyruss, Nintendo's Mario Bros (which introduced Luigi, though I don't think he was called that initially), Atari's Battlezone (a very early FPS that was used to train tank crews as the Bradley Trainer), Sega's Space Harrier and Afterburner, and I could go on but won't :)

Dragon's Lair and Space ace were technically one of a kind as they both used regular animation on a Laserdisk that would be selected by the joystick input at certain key points in the game. Space Invaders was also technically impressive as it used a two way mirror to overlay the animation on the background. The arcade games achieved great performance because most of them used multiple processors for audio and video, something that wasn't the case for home computers and consoles. As for me, the best game was Space Harrier. If there was still an arcade opened around here, I'd still pop-in some tokens just to play this on the big motion-controlled cabinet that they had.

I loved growing up in the 80s and the arcades where one of the best parts. I remember getting dropped off at the local mall which at the time had the only arcade. It was huge and had all of the games listed in this video. All of my friends and I would play for hours with rolls of quarters. My favorites were Pac-Man, Frogger, Donkey Kong, and Centipede. Plus the sit down game Pole Position. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.😊👍🏾

Battle Zone is the one I miss the most. It was a unique immersive experience because of the way it went around the sides of your head. I have yet to find one of them in a retro arcade 😔

Major Havoc and Tailgunner. Could not get enough of those!

Oh man, the hours I spent playing those games! Two of my favourites you didn’t mention were GYRUS and The Mr. Do series, in particular Mr. Do’s Wild Ride. Eventually I got to a point on GYRUS I would typically get about an hour’s fun on one quarter. What a blast from the past this was. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

I well remember the first time that I saw Dragon's Lair when it popped up in the mall arcade. I was completely in awe of the graphics, it was truly innovative for that time! It was one of the more expensive to play, so I only tried it a few times, but boy, was it breathtaking compared to everything else available at the time!

Here's what stands out to me about Arcade games. The first popular game i remember was Space Invaders in 1978. In 79 you had Asteroids and Galaxians. But if you look at 1980 to 1982 you had so many incredible arcade games come out. Just look at the games that came out between 80 to 82. Pacman, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Mrs Pacman, Galaga, Moon Cresta, Defender, Scramble, Robotron, Frogger, Centipede, Millipede, Missile Command, Joust, Dig Dug, Vanguard, Zaxxon, Qbert, Pole Position, Jungle Hunt, Tempest, Moon Patrol, Moon Buggy, Cobra, Berzerk, Gorf, Phoenix, Burger Time, Battle Zone, Mr Do, Star Castle, Tron, Pleiads. On KZbin, i've found some amazing looking space games that i didn't play back in the early 80s, but these games look great. Just look up any of these games on KZbin. Space Cruiser, Condor, Space Firebird, Speak and Rescue, Astro Fantasia, Astro Blaster, Space Fury, Battle Cross

I'll be 55 this year in November, just the age of arcades back in the day. Holy hell the money I spent back then, luckily I had a high school friend that worked at Chuck -e cheese and would give me handfuls of tokens. I would play for hours! Thanks, Steve! haha

I used to love going to the arcade back then. I was pretty good at Centipede and Tempest. Also loved Galaxian, Galaga, Defender, Stargate and Star Castle. There was another Flying Shooter game I recall it was F-14 Tomcat or After burn ... something like that. That was really cool too!

One thing about Q*Bert is that when he would jump off the playing field into the abyss, you would actually feel a thud from the cabinet when Q*Bert finally hit the ground.

Spent so many quarters on Dragons Lair, was so happy when I finally beat it. Then came Space Ace. I eventually beat that one as well. Played the heck out of Donkey Kong too. I remember if you took a plastic straw and stuck it all the way in between the top hinge of the coin door, then jiggled the straw up and down it would hit a switch and rack up free credits. We would always rack up the max 99 credits, sometimes we would leave the machine with over 50+ credits still on it.

You are right. I remember my father taking me and a couple of friends on a Saturday night and we would go arcade hopping. The three arcades I remember were "Infinity Video Games (it was rather small) Tomorrow's Game Room (slightly bigger than the former) then there was Hobby Oasis. This arcade was huge. It probably had over 200 stand-up cabinets, a designated area for the approximately 50 table tops, and another room just for Pinball. Those were the good ol' days. The years go by but the memories stay.

Cyberball was one of my faves. Came out in the late 80's. I was in college in my early 20's and would play at the arcade bar. I would buy a pitcher of beer and set it on the console and just have a blast. I would usually smoke a bowl before coming in. Fun times.

I was born in 1971 and I started playing arcades in '78 or '79. I would go to the arcades at Forum 303 Mall in Arlington, TX with my brother. We loved it. He was hooked on Space Invaders. I was hooked on either racing or Star Fire(a pre Star Wars arcade). In the 80's I played a lot of arcades you named. Here are my favorites: Pac Man, Mrs. Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Frogger, Q-Bert, Galaxian, Galaga, Zaxxon, Super Zaxxon, Rampage, Tron, Missile Command, Spy Hunter and Star Wars(followed by Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi).

Absolutely POWERFUL! Loved every minute of this! I have played almost all of the ones mentioned. Out of all the consoles I have owned, I would say I had the most fun with the Sega Master System. Shinobi and Joust were Arcade favorites!

I remember being able to walk up to a game cabinet and watch a stranger play a game. Sometimes, they would invite you to play doubles. Now you get that close to a stranger, and you get a dirty look.

My family had a vending business and video games were the natural extension back in the day. I was lucky enough to spend countless hours playing these games for free while they were on our shop floor. Many of them immediately after their release before anyone else had the chance to play them.

I never quite had a roll of quarters, but I dug up as many as I could every week! It was crushing, when your last 'guy' died, and you were out of quarters!

I went through a 5 gallon bucket of change a while back. I noticed that there were a lack of quarters from 1979-1986 once I was done separating them all. Looking into it, I learned that there are still millions of quarters from that time frame missing from circulation, probably still sitting in the guts of old arcade games, collecting dust in someone's garage.

7:46 Dragon's Lair had such incredible graphics because it was recorded on a laser disc, the first ever game to do this. The game play was simplistic because the movement of the joystick or press of a button would determine which scene came up next in the laser disc, similar to a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book (another great 80's artifact).

MAN I miss the 80’s. The music, the malls and all these video games. Our local one in SoCal was Pudgies, I’d spend my life there until dinner or when I ran out of money. Ms Pac Man and Galaga were my top 2. I still play them when I go to this retro game/bar to relive my childhood.

I remember some of these. Never played tempest, star wars or dragon’s lair, zaxxon or tron. I dropped a lot of quarters in those days. A few arcades i loved playing that weren’t mentioned were Kung Fu, Tarzan, Mighty Bomb Jack, Punch Out, Spy Hunter, Mario Bros (no not super Mario bros, the original one with the POW block on the center of the screen) and of course, who can forget street fighter. Great days indeed. Thx for the throwback.

@9:27 Zaxxon's photo is from Cedar Point Amusement Park's Main Arcade. It had a Nintendo (Donkey Kong) joystick put on it which for a Donkey Kong player like myself actually made it easier to play although I was already good at Zaxxon. It's shown in my video "Zaxxon Classic 1980's Arcade Machine Actual Gameplay & Cabinet | amusement420" I have a playlist of some of the 80's arcade games they had in 2007-08. They auctioned off those and the pinball machines to turn the arcade into primarily modern redemption ticket games and a small bowling alley.
