I only ever saw Miss Paige in this role on Broadway. I remember securing a coveted seat in fifth-row orchestra while waiting in line to buy a seat, when I was approached by an attractive lady in a business suit who had to fly out of town that day. She sold it to me at a discount of $65. That's all the cash I had in my pocket. I watched her entrance on the stairs and gasped how much she looked like Gloria Swanson. Then she began to sing and I swooned and was mesmerized by her portrayal of Norma Desmond. I didn't know who she was at that point and later found out she was a huge star in England. A beautiful singer and actress. She was unforgettable for me that night.

We saw Elaine Paige in the London production on her last night in front of the LloydWebers and Michael Ball who was sitting behind me. Absolutely magical! We wondered if someone so tiny could command this show but the moment she walked on , she owned the theatre. Absolutely stunning and proving that seeing someone of Elaine’s stature live is absolutely the right thing to do. Nothing beats live Theatre.

Beautiful. She completely channels Gloria Swanson. Elaine Paige is so good at bringing that quiet desperation to a character. She sings this much the way she sang "Memory," both as a lament and as a plea for acceptance.

Elaine's version is so mesmerising and thus one of the most tragic because she sounds so childlike. In some interpretations you get the sense that Norma even in her narcissism knows deep down that the cameras stopped rolling for her long ago so there's a sense of almost false confidence and motivating herself in the song. Believing in the unreal like someone who knows Santa isn't real but keeps the milk and cookies out anyway. But Elaine's Norma genuinely believes that this is her moment the one she's longed for- her comeback but not a comeback cause she hates that word. It's such a sad state especially cause you are watching this woman in her 50s Norma is meant to be 50 right being just so..lost and she doesn't even know it.

It's amazing her eye movements and physicality mirror Gloria Swanson's almost to the T. If you didn't know the context of the song it'd be so amazing and uplifting but it's actually one of the saddest songs in a musical it's about someone who is so deluded and consumed by the fame monster that she really has nothing else to live for but the past and the career and world that has left her there

I ADORE Patti Lupone and credit her for really, originating the role. Glenn Close is lovely..dramatically and sometimes vocally...Betty Buckley does an AMAZING JOB in her portrayal. Brilliant voice and strong characterizations. FOR ME... Elaine Paige WINS.. SHE IS SOOOOO CLEVER in her brilliant mid boggling rendering of Ms. Desmond... When there is IMMENSE talent accented with expert craft, the result is Elaine Paige in SUNSET BOULEVARD

And credit to Gloria Swanson for her courage in the original film production. Surely some aspects of portraying Norma Desmond must have been too close to the bone and very painful for her. How could it be otherwise?

Elaine did a spectacular job of playing Norma Desmond for sure. But Glenn Close will always be my favourite hands down. I saw her on Broadway and the audience reaction to her was phenomenal. And then again in London in 2016 Glenn literally returned and blew my socks off at the Coliseum. I really hoped she would have got the film role but it never materialised. So a full round of applause to Elaine she undoubtedly brought a gentler Norma to life and I thoroughly loved it.

Bravo, Elaine! BRAVO. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I don't know why I'm frightened I know my way around here The cardboard trees, the painted seas, the sound here... Yes, a world to rediscover But I 'm not in any hurry And I need a moment The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways The atmosphere as thrilling here as always Feel the early morning madness Feel the magic in the making Why, everything's as if we never said goodbye I've spent so many mornings just trying to resist you I'm trembling now, you can't know how I've missed you Missed the fairy tale adventure In this ever spinning playground We were young together I'm coming out of make-up The lights already burning Not long until the cameras will start turning... And the early morning madness And the magic in the making Yes, everything's as if we never said goodbye I don't want to be alone That's all in the past This world's waited long enough I've come home at last! And this time will be bigger And brighter than we knew it So watch me fly, we all know I can do it... Could I stop my hand from shaking? Has there ever been a moment With so much to live for? The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways So much to say not just today but always... We'll have early morning madness We'll have magic in the making Yes, everything's as if we never said goodbye Yes, everything's as if we never said goodbye... We taught the world new ways to dream!

Such a powerful performance from the great Elaine Paige! ... I know in her book she suggests that "With One Look" is _Sunset Boulevard's_ equivalent to "Memory" (i.e. from CATS)... And maybe that's how she feels about it when she sings it... But IMHO the "Memory" of _Sunset_ is _this_ song.

❤❤ An absolutely all consuming performance in so many ways. When a singer can transport you to her reality in that moment, when you feel what she feels ...her thoughts ..her memories, the emotions of the character she's portraying. Well then she's done her job. This was a truly moving performance. And the individuals that put this scene together did a magnificent job as well. I could go on and on. It's just that great. And Ms Paige has the looks of of that time which added to it. It's time to watch (Sunset Boulevard) with a better appreciation for the life of the character in the movie. Thankyou for the video, one I will always keep on my phone.

I saw this with Patti Lupine in the very first West End run that closed as ALWAYS wanted to rewrite it, and then when it reopened with Betty Buckley. It was hard to remember what changes had been made but it went from being interesting but not thrilling to a hit show. I never saw Elaine Paige perform this role except on TV but I did see her in Chess, Anything Goes and Piaf. She’s an incredible singer but she’s also a terrific actress with total immersion in her character and full command of the stage. Her Piaf was extraordinary.
