I always called it "the grooviest nightmare you will ever hear" Had it on 7 inch 45, was also the first to digitize it and upload to Napster way back in 1999

Bought it played it once and never played it again. Great musicianship and compelling vocal but disturbing as hell. I can't think of any other song that ever unsettled me so much as this and I still can't listen to it even now 30 years later.

I agree. There is an instrumental version which I love.

I never understood the point this track was trying to make, I listened to it once, just like someone said in the comments below, and couldn't bring myself to listen again until today... and it's still just as disturbing.

The story is of date rape, which unfortunately is all too common. The producer of the record, Jerry Dammers, himself called it a listen only once record. It was also released at a time when some judges were making some very disturbing comments about rape victims such as 'you shouldn't have been wearing that (dress)'.

@shack7631 Must have been hard and very triggering for Terry Hall to listen to Rhoda perform this song on stage every night on tour. It never would have accoured to Jerry that one of his own bandmates might be a rape survivor which tells it's own unfortunate story about the ignorance around rape at the time (and still now) even today it's still defined by most as something that women experience.

Great track, but electronic drums ruin it and the vocals are too high in the mix. Prefer the instrumental version.
