Rhodan Trolling Motor 16 Month Review Update & Tampa Bay Stone Crabs

A lot of people have asked on my Rhodan install video how the trolling motor and batteries are holding up. I wanted to give an update 16 months after install.

My fishing buddy got a Rhodan this year. Had a real rough time getting the thing to power drift us in the right direction with some pretty stiff cross winds. Basically didn't work well for flounder in those winds. Could have been operator error, but it seems like that little remote can only do so much. I'm considering a TM myself and it looks like the MinnKota, paired up with a Humminbird, can give you all kinds of track options. Does the Rhodan pair up with any mobile devices or screens, to set up tracks? The Minkota digital screen remote seems much more full featured. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the Rhodan. You've got a beautiful boat there.

Thank you very much. I believe the newer models pair with simrad. I really only use it to anchor and don’t do many tracks but I could see that being a big benefit if you were working a mangrove line or a jetty

Mine is about 3 years old, 3rd steering box (I've corrected their design flaws in my 3rd so wont have that issue again), and this last time i sent it off to a repair center and was 5 hours of labor and every part (acm, mcb, hcb) was changed except the motor and steering box to include the FOB. Works great when it does but its reliability when going offshore is crap.

So you think batteries with 98 amp hours would do the job? Rhodan suggested 100 but the difference in price from what i found is pretty substantial.

Yeah you should be fine with 98. Unless you are fishing all day in heavy current you likely won’t kill them. I actually killed my agms for the first time last tournament after running in heavy current and wind for 16 hours

The 108 is in. I have a 30 foot heavy WA. Debating on getting it vs the 96. Thoughts?

The 96 should be plenty for your hull. 108” can’t hurt, but is another 1’ worth $500 to you?

I run the same hull in the Northeast. Often I have tight 2-4's with better waves mixed in. I am looking at the 108" vs. the 96". how often does the 96" pop free of the water on you when it's a little snotty?

Hey Mike - I don’t believe anyone makes a 108” yet to my knowledge. The 96 does a pretty good job for us up to 3.5-4ft then it will pop out of the water a little. If it’s that snotty we usually are not bottom fishing and will troll or drift.

I got 3 12v group 31 AGM from Sam’s club. Some people went with lithium but I didn’t want to spend that much
