Awesome video! So I bought with cash a 17ft aluminum shell of a jonboat. It had no transom, no seats, couple of holes, and no floor covering the stringers. It really should have been scrapped. Stupid me endured and made it happen. I have many receipts and pictures of the rebuild. Will they give me a hard time about the existing old shell that I used to build it off of? It was given to me by a guy who was going to scrap the shell.

Just show FWC some picture of the build and you should be ok. I mean nobody builds a boat and doesn’t take any pics of the progress. They are just trying to weed out any possible stolen boats.

@LightningCapitalLivingАй бұрын
I’d call the DMV and see. There has to be some kind of registration. If it was a foreign boat you should be able to title it as long as there is proof it’s not stolen.

Great video - thank you for posting this. Getting ready to do my first service on my XTO450s and this will be super helpful. One quick comment... On the Yamaha video "Gearcase Lubricant Exchange System How It Works" they say that you should leave the air vent hose connected for 5 minutes after you tilt the motor down to allow the air to purge from the lower unit. Not sure what issues it might cause if you don't do that but thought it was worth mentioning. Thanks again for a great video!

Is there a pump that helps drain the water
@LightningCapitalLiving2 ай бұрын
No it is gravity fed. The drain is 3” lower than the livewell and if there is any residual water when the boat is on the trailer it drains out. Doesn’t take much of an angle.

Two questions... 1) Did you put motors in neutral or in gear before you pulled lower? Was it tough to get it to align?. I struggled on a F150, but that lower is 3 times the weight. 🙂 2) I usually work on lowers by myself, but that 425.... definitely a 2 person job?
@LightningCapitalLiving3 ай бұрын
So these motors automatically go to neutral when the key turns off, so they were in neutral. Also very easy to slide in and out . If you had a ratchet strap I thing you could get it off by yourself, but once that last bolt comes out it’s going down for sure. I’m a strong dude but I wasn’t turning down any help with this

My son found your build and is so ready to build one for his senior project. Before we started spending money I wanted to ask a few questions. The plans you order, do they come with complete step by step instructions or do you have to figure it out on your own? I looked for a complete video series from Salt Boatworks but just find short segments. Did the cart you have for the build have plans for it or is that something you came up with? There is so much different information and thoughts I just wanted to ask someone that has created something at the level of what we can strive to achieve. We are down in Corpus Christi, TX if anyone knows of someone that has completed one of these with success. I would like to see one in person and get some do's and don'ts.
@LightningCapitalLiving4 ай бұрын
The plans come with some notes at the bottom, but there is not a comprehensive list of directions. The short videos on salt Boatworks KZbin get you the general idea on how to put things together. I found them very useful as I had no idea what I was doing when I first started. The cart I built around the actual cradle that salt boatworks gives you a template for. In his videos you see the 5-7 boards that support the hull while you build it and there are plans for how to cut those boards out. I just went a step further and added some bracing and put it on some heavy duty casters so I was able to spin the boat around and move it to access some stuff in my garage. If you join the salt boatworks Facebook group there is a ton of info and several builds documented. Fishing with Hoang is another great channel and he built a 15’ from one of the original set of plans back in 2020. I know he is in south TX and loves to show off his boat. Post in the FB group and I’m sure someone could meet up so you can look over the boat. It does seem like you’re going to be drinking from a firehouse to start, but there is enough info and tips out there to really guide you through the process. I had no idea what I was getting into, but honestly I’d start to build another one tomorrow if I didn’t already have 2 boats.

Did you take the yatch channel accros Florida bay or where did tou cut across to Marathon? Im doing the trip from Tavernier to St. Pete Saturday.
@LightningCapitalLiving5 ай бұрын
We actually just ran right across from Marco to marathon. Straight heading to 7 mile bridge as it was 8-14’ the entire way. Had to do a lot of crab pot dodging, but never had depth issues. Once you make the turn kind of SE past Marco Island you shouldn’t have any depth issues unless you’re running something huge. Your chart should be marked pretty good on depth. The most shallow part of the run was the initial turn around marco to cape sable. The more south and wide you make that turn the better. From there we just sat on autopilot cruising
