Ethel is the one who cast the Mary show . She knew talent and chemistry and it’s apparent from her speech that she herself has that talent in being able to communicate love and gratitude. Went both ways .

This was so lovely. I have been watching interviews, and and in some she talked about seeing these actors and talking to the studio heads on their behalf. She was humble as she talked about it.

"...For God's sake, never let them see you cry..." -- imagine how necessary that was as one of the few female executives in the industry.

Ethel Winant, an Emmy and Peabody award-winning television producer.made history as the first woman to hold an executive position at a network. She fought for the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Without her, it wouldn't have happened.

Ethel was one of the CBS geniuses who decided to "humanize" Judy Garland for her 1963-4 TV series, surrounding her with goofball Jerry Van Dyke, 2nd-rate acts, and third-rate dialog, even at one point putting Judy in a football uniform to lure hillbillies away from Bonanza. Of course Ethel can't take full credit for torpedoing Garland's career, but she did her part.

Most of these people are in Heaven. After hearing Betty White's frail, squeaky voice in a recent NFL commercial I fear she will be next.
