During the bush war in Rhodesia, when given a choice, many of us preferred the FN (FAL) to the AK. An enemy hiding behind a tree or a wall was not safe from the FN, it would go right through. Not so with the AK.

The FAL (L1A1 in the UK) was also the standard UK army rifle at that time. I was 4 in 1977 and my Action Man toy had a FAL!😄 Fantastic looking rifle. My wife's uncle was an armourer in the Rhodesian Army for years. I mentioned to him the other day how sought after these rifles were and he just could not believe it. He had quite a collection when he lived in SA but had to sell them when he moved to the UK. He was gutted as he was so attached to them. He told me a funny story once. He got a job as an assistant in a camera shop in Durban through his network of army friends. He would be allowed to wear his pistol on his belt in the shop. The pay was cash in hand. When he was told the lousy daily pay rate he was shocked, but the manager said 'well there's always the chance you'll get to shoot somebody!'

Sir I'm so sorry that my country (USA), (along with many other nations) failed you and yours in your time of need. The actions of the U.K. in particular was deplorable in the extreme. Even now when it should be obvious and undeniable that the lives of all within your borders would have been quantifiably better had your side prevailed not one nation has put forth a formal apology. Not that it would be enough nor restore your Homeland but at least it'd be something. However what with the culture of white guilt and critical race theory running rampant I suppose it'll never come to pass. So as a single American let me personally say how sorry I am. I hope you found a safe place for you and yours as everything around you fell and I pray that I'm not right now witnessing my own Homeland falling to a very similar dark fate.

Yes we (Rhodesians) are all devastated that a mad dictator was allowed to destroy our homeland, a gift from the UK government but we have learned to start new lives in new countries, still connected with our brethren from that era. I hope and I pray that your country can withstand the turmoil that you guys are going through. Modern day WOKE societies and multi cultural growth in western countries are destroying history and our heritages. United we stand, divided we fall. God bless you, and god bless America. :)

@@WhiteIkiryo-yt2it The SAS did keep using them in certain situations I believe - like the Gulf war when operating out of vehicles - more fire power over long open distances. Although that may have been G3s - but basically they did use a 7.62 battle rifle sometimes in the desert. Larry Vickers mentions it in one of his videos because he worked with the SAS in that war. His Delta unit was using M4 carbines, and he was thinking "why are we using these 5.56 carbines in the dessert, when the SAS with lots of dessert experience are using FALs/G3s?"

It was for the South African R1 rifles, the later IMBELs exported to the newly formed nation of Zimbabwe would however, retain their carry handles since field modifications like that are generally prohibited in most armies. I just haven't read an authoritative source on that whether it was done at the Depot level or in the field (or both), if you don't mind to point me to a good primer on the subject. Carry handles were removed also no slings. Carry handles would deflect brass into peoples eyes and well if you have it in your hands you're quicker to respond to an ambush. Also if you've ever had to sling around an FAL for a long time it'll throw your back out, best to carry it with your mitts.

"One Fire" and the album it's from, "Passage to Rhodesia" are both honestly *extremely* melancholy. The album is presented as being from the perspective of a white Rhodesian who is looking back at everything and realizing the futility of the war and how they were probably not even fighting for the right cause, with lyrics like "[Rhodesia] were you ever even ours?" Give the full thing a listen, it's pretty nuanced.

I used the British version of the FAL back in my cadets days and it was outstanding. I am no giant at 6'1" but it didn't seem cumbersome at all - in fact it seemed pretty slim, light and easy to handle - more like a properly ergonomic hunting rifle than some lumpy crude battle rifle. Accuracy was good as was reliability. We used to clean them by filling a bin with hot soapy water and chucking them in to soak. Worked fine.

I love my South African made/Rhodesian FAL I bought an older kit and luckily the SA serial numbers and the Rhodesian serial numbers all match. Used a DSA receiver too and aged it to match the rest of the kit. I found a Halbek device for the muzzle and it does work well. Also scored a camo RA boonie hat as well as a camo RA rifle shoulder bag. Would love to know where you found the uniform.

SLR L1A1 was my weapon in military service back in the 1970’s. 9 pounds 15 ounces fully loaded. I loved the long flat trajectory of the 7.62mm rounds and the accuracy and reliability of the rifle. The carry handle was useful on longer marches.

The thing is that once you got shot with the FN FAL (or R1) you stayed shot. That thing could comfortably take a person out from behind a big tree. I served in the South African military in1979 and 1980. Initially it was heavy to carry but you once got used to that , you just felt really safe with it on your side. It was no pop gun for sure. The only problem with it in the SA situation (dusty on the border) was that it was a prima donna. It (especially the magazines) wanted to be perfectly clean at all time. That caused a lot of stoppages. It was replaced around 1980 onwards with the so called R4 (basically a Galil platform) . A very good rifle too.

Really cool video. It is nice to see a video about Rhodesian FAL with its true history. The South African R1. Also don't worry about the pattern 83 battle jacket that is not right for the rifle. It still looks great with the brushstroke camo. In South Africa we used the Pattern 70 if I remember correctly with the R1. I have both and the pattern 83 is much more comfortable. The pattern 70 is heavy and have zero comfort build in to it. They were made for tough men. Good luck!!

The secret to Rhodesia's combat effectiveness was not fire force. It was, in fact, the shorts. A warrior wearing those shorts is effectively transformed into an absolute Chad on the battlefield. But no seriously. Any dude willing to go into the African bush wearing shorts and kick ass has my vote
