Your vertical text on the Sunset brought back an image of the vertical multicoloured sign that used to be there (obviously done from knowledge). I used to spend my teens in Rhyl and then a bit later at The Bistro (Savoy Bistro) for the alternative scene. Best club in North Wales & the best people. Codfather chippy next to it was always interesting at 3am ;)
@UKTravelAdventures1Ай бұрын
Yes, I always remember the sunset sign down the side of the building. Also, every room having a sea view obviously long before the new sea defences were built, making the promenade much higher and wider.

Used to go on Holidays to Rhyl as a Kid in late 60s early 70s i used to call it the Welsh Las Vegas. Then we started going to Greenacres Porthmadog

god what have they done to the place, had so many great days out there in the early seventies, loads to do , beautiful beachfront gardens were always immaculate, looks like a ghost town now, so sad
@UKTravelAdventures1Ай бұрын
It is sad..if you didn't know how it used to be, you would never guess now..such a shame, such fantastic memories for thousands of families locked into the fabric and foundation of the place.

I have tried to bring my memories of the place to life..there was so much more to Rhyl than you can see or I can ever recall or depict, so much fun and life, so much character, incredible stories long forgotten..my father and his father have recalled memories to me so forgotten now of those times....8 hr trips in ford consuls or austin minis... just to get there...cycling to Rhyl from Stoke-on-Trent ..the Corner Cafe in the 50s and 60s.. the mod scooters and the bikers or how about camping on the beach or in the fields with little or no money just to be there...what an amazing atmosphere and great time people still had..

Spent every Summer holidays in the 70s with my parents and my sister in Rhyl, caught two trains to get there and always walked from the train station to the same hotel evey year on Edward Henry St. Spent many a hour in the kids pool with the fountain in the middle also went on the paddle boats for the set time before the shout of "come in No4 your time is up". Also remember the cycle track, trampolines, bowling green and of course the fun fair. Also remember walking from the hotel before reaching to main road there was a small bus depot I think and always remember the Black Cat amusements which is now mini golf. So many happy Summers holidays, oh and punch and Judy under the clock tower.

It's heart breaking Rhyl used to be the place to go for a family holiday it was wonderful and the beaches are so nice I remember going when I was little with my mum it's disgusting how they have been allowed to underinvest and let the place go to pot

I remember when I was 17 back in the summer of 1966...me and two mates hitchhiked from Kirkby, Liverpool to Rhyl which was really lively back then...and after a night at the funfair it was time to find somewhere to get our heads down...my two mates had a sleeping bag each, and I never...But we decided to sleep on the sand dunes...I was tucked in between my mates all cosy in their bags but I was absolutely freezing!..I thought I was going to die so woke them up and we decided then to go on the parade and try and sleep in one of the open shelters there...we all managed to doze off...but suddenly I was awoken by a copper smacking me across my head with a heavy gloved hand...I thought my head had exploded!...He started yelling at us to get out of Rhyl ...and shouting “I don’t want you scum in this town!”....We were up and leggin’ out of there as fast as we could!....I haven’t been back to that place ever since.

I have lived in Rhyl all my life and seen the decline of Rhyl it used to be a children's paradise it said it as you came over the blue bridge things are closing by the week the sealife centre next the cinema shops etc I would like to know who ruined Rhyl by pulling all the attractions down and making it a ghost town the holiday flats and the b and b's are made into permenant flats and bedsits I read it was the worse seaside resort in the UK so come on make Rhyl great again it was great here when I was growing up x

I lived in Rhyl (viola avenue) when I was a good bit younger than I am now, i absolutely loved it there, Baron nights were at the theatre one time and I got up on the stage to sing with them, mothers insistence, I was very embarrassed but it was fun, another time rod or Roy hull was there and he asked for a woman who had lots of kids so I stuck my hand up and called out she has 12 (most were step kids) but it didn’t matter, so he threw her a prize, it was half pound of echo margarine, everyone laughed, I wasn’t forgiven that evening, Mother loved playing bingo and winning tickets for the theatre, I worked in the kitchen at shepards restaurant then did waitressing when they were busy, such lovely people who owned it, then went to work on the fair, geeing which was holding a top prize ( a huge teddy) so that people would see it and play the game I got £2 for each evening, I didn’t mind because I could hear great music being played, after that I worked on the beach with the donkeys, guiding children up and down the beach, it was great fun, my younger brother found an old broken pram and made it into a cart with fathers help, and he used to take peoples luggage from the railway station to the guest house where they were staying, such wonderful memories and Rhyl will always have a special place in my heart, such a shame that it has such bad reports these days. Thank you for the memories. ❤

They were good times, Rhyl in its day was a good place and holds special memories in many peoples hearts, most sadly now gone, I always wanted to create something to honour those people and the fabulous holidays and enjoyment it gave to those folk.

I love Rhyl. Raised here, live here and will die here. Yes it’s seen better days but then Spain opened up with cheap hols in the Sun so Rhyl kinda got hit bad.

It did and in fairness to rhyl there's not to many places in the uk that have faired much better in recent years..especially seaside resorts.

Do you guys remember the smell of onions cooking, real candyfloss, or how about the sound of the clicking of the chain on the log flume..I'll never forget that sound. Did you ride one of the BMX bikes where the pavilion swimming pool used to be and later an ice skating rink ? Maybe you drank in the palace hotel? Or even rode the Monorail Leave your messages below..😊

I remember swimming in the open air lido down by the Pavilion area & to this day the shock i got when the water was salty as i was used to chlorinated baths water sticks in me mind. Also there was the seemingly huge glasshouses of the Botanical Gardens & inside I got my 1st look at the colourful blue + yellow Parrots which in the early 70s appeared so exotic in my B & W Tv days. Later in the mid 80s i visited the 2 nightclubs, 1 was the Kings downstairs at the Palace which was always rough & played alternative sounds but my favourite club was the Bistro mainly due to the little manager who sat at the foot of the entrance stairs passing judgement on who could enter. I very rarely saw or experienced trouble there even in mid-summer due to the vetting at the door & that club played indie sounds. I went once to the Orange Juice by the fair but it was like the wild West the night i went & i never went back.

the council need to give there heads a wobble, we all know the history behind the former council and how they neglected Rhyl. Its now a new council body right through, I hope they do the right thing and bring Rhyl back to what it once was, a thriving/busting tourist/holiday location that for many was once the "getaway" we all needed, at present its just an empty shell but full of memories....
@UKTravelAdventures13 ай бұрын
Rhyl could be so good again, it still has a lot going for it, I just wish they had preserved more of it's history and not been so quick to demolish and redevelop everything.
