This movie so perfectly captures the blue-collar aura of Pittsburgh/Johnstown, & of the entire Rust Belt in general. The look, the colors, the cars, the dialogue, the atmosphere of smoke & gloom that permeates all year 'round, even in the summer & fall (The greater Pittsburgh metro area only averages about 50-55 sunny days per year)...Incredible. Only thing missing is the Yinzer accent of SW PA. I was in high school in the Pittsburgh area when it came out...It was a huge deal all throughout the WPIAL region.
@donufro6 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right. I grew up in Johnstown in the 80s and 90s and this movie "feels like" Johnstown, even though most of the mills were gone by the time I was born. It wasn't smoky or dirty by then, but it was definitely gloomy weather-wise and football is king around western PA, probably second only to Texas. This song actually makes me a little wistful.

Tom Cruise's most underrated movie; the late Christopher Penn is tremendous as well, and Lea Thompson was her usual fetching self. And I'm happy that I bought this hard-to-find, very repeatable ultra-catchy 45 at the time at Musicland. (It was on a 3" cd-single also.) And everyone needs to be aware that there is a nearly perfect (unlike the domestic release of her very premature best-of LP) Jennifer Warnes' import compilation CD available from Australia; fabulous sound and even in-depth liner notes, with the only significant missing track being "Nights are Forever".

If you grew up in Cleveland, Cincy, Weirton, Wheeling, Pittsburgh, or Johnstown (or anywhere else in the Rust Belt) in the late '70s-early '80s -- Just as the American steel industry was imploding & collapsing -- This movie goes straight to the heart....Hits so close to home. They coulda filmed it anywhere in the Pittsburgh/Johnstown area & it woulda been identical/interchangeable. In fact, through the rest of the '80s (pre-Google, pre-internet, pre-IMDB), high school kids all over the greater Pittsburgh area would either brag that the movie was filmed at their schools, or claim that Ampipe & Walnut Heights were based on their schools, especially kids who went to Ambridge and/or Woodland Hills....
@gymnast28905 жыл бұрын
Well, that's kind of depressing. This is the best & most underrated Cruise film. Everyone is great in it. A football movie was filmed where I grew up, I was in it. I'm in the trailer (beauty pageant scene). My boyfriend's best friend played Dennis Quaid's son in a bit part, & a Coach from my school was in it. Baton Rouge, La. I met Jessica Lange, Meg Ryan (talked to her for a hr, didn't know who she was. She was dating Dennis Quaid.). Everybody's All American Taylor Hackford was the director (of Against All Odds, Officer and a Gentleman, etc). Do you know where the movie was filmed? Obviously I'm not familiar with those parts. You can see some of Baton Rouge in the parts. Especially LSU, although it was filmed at different stadiums.

I remember seeing this for the first time when I was in high school in the late 90s, and though I grew up a couple hours south down in Clarksburg, WV, this resonated then. I sort of had the mentality they did where they had to do something extraordinary to get out, and they had to work around the gatekeepers like Coach and avoid potentially devastating circumstances like an accidental pregnancy. Lea Thompson was perfect in this role. Cruise was perfect. The movie was gritty and real, and seeing all the dilapidated buildings, the mud, the “guts” of the city, having parents who didn’t want me to follow my dreams; man I’m tearing up thinking about it. It wasn’t easy, but I got out. Now Clarksburg is run down and drug infested, and I’m in Philly with a beautiful family and a burgeoning freelance music career. I ended up going to grad school at Duquesne and saw all of the surrounding areas of Pgh from playing at various churches and such, and it’s such a romantic movie in its authenticity. Can’t say enough how much I love this movie.

Tarantulisimo ampipe came from Ambridge and walnut hills came from north hills. Being from WPa and playing high school ball, as all the jobs dried up, Friday night was for keeps. You were either good enough to play college ball or it was the military.
@Tarantulisimo4 жыл бұрын
@@Biggdoom344 True...I also grew up partially in SW PA. Yes, Ampipe was obviously patterned on Ambridge, but it also reflects several other steel town districts between Pittsburgh & Johnstown. And Walnut Heights was obviously modeled on several larger & more upper class districts such as North Hills, USC, & Fox Chapel, but mainly Westmont Hilltop in Johnstown. Back then, I remember that every school in the WPIAL network would claim that the schools were based on their schools.

What a great line. Tom Cruise best movie. He played a great role. Made it seem so real. Craig T Nelson was very good. The scene where Djordjevic sees Coach Nickerson and his wife in the restaurant and he apologizes then leaves. Nickerson tries to talk to him and Djordjevic says "You screwed me, man. Who the hell do you think you are?" You are just a typing teacher, you are not god". Best lines in the movie. So true because in the era, the high school coach had the player in the palm of their hand. Thank god for travel ball. That movie still hits home 40 years later. The girlfriend, Lisa, went to the Nickersons wife and talked sense to her. The wife had Nickerson give Djordjevic a scholarship eve though it was to CAL POLY. lol The girlfriend went out of her way to do that because she knew how much the football scholarship meant to Djordjevic. Funny thing is, I married a Lisa (Conn) Gloucester NJ. They dont make movies like this no longer.

+Tarantulisimo All right, and thanks for the info. He was really young when he made this! Never been to Johnstown but must be very similar to Pittsburgh .

Yes Johnstown is pretty much a smaller version of Pittsburgh, with identical topography & working class vibe. In fact, most towns, boroughs, & cities in SW PA are basically mini-Pittsburghs. Each one has (or at least had) it's mills & factories, they all have hilly terrain, & all have the same gloomy overcast climate 350 days outta the year....

funny thing, bet if you were to ask Tom Cruise about this movie, he probably doesn't even remember it. smh, this was the ages of the good Tom Cruise!

She also sang the Oscar-winning songs "Up Where We Belong" from "An Officer and a Gentleman" (with Joe Cocker) and "It Goes Like It Goes" from "Norma Rae." "(I've Had)the Time of My Life" was an Oscar winner, too.

@MrKGor Yeah, this is as great movie and an under-rated movie no doubt. Tom Cruise was very convincing as a high school cornerback, you could tell that he really worked out and was serious about the movie role. The film reflected the depressed economic times of the early 1980s. It's relevant today to our depressed economic times. Could there be a remake? Seems like it would be a good fit for the times that we live in with the layoffs, the unemployment and the despair of the rustbelt region.

Right now at bars all through the SW PA Rust Belt, somebody is still telling somebody else that this movie was filmed in their town at their old high school...Ongoing urban legend.
