@@FCLaney Exactly! And to be fair, Zelma Davis was a strong singer in her own right (she was no Martha Wash, but she could sing). I read an oral history of that whole situation, and apparently when Zelma would tell people during the video shoot that someone else had sang, C + C told her to keep quiet. I got the sense that Zelma was young and as blindsided by the controversy as anyone.

I think the quote at around 3:41 sums up the root of the issue: people superficially caring more about what they see rather than who the talent is or where the real talent is coming from. Pop music has always relied on shiny, flashy, superficially attractive imagery to hook people since the music industry even began, but there are times where the industry takes it too far. This was one of those times.

y'all don't realize image was everything back then. if image wasn't a problem they would've used Martha in the videos. you rarely saw overweight women in videos back then, and if you did they would use video trickery to try to make you look thinner like Vesta or Ann Wilson from Heart. The look was more important than the voice when it came to marketing.
@SmartRobot-wc2fb
@SmartRobot-wc2fb 7 жыл бұрын
steve LOL...that is not true...it's the other way around...nowadays is the time where is getting incredibly difficult to see a overweight pop star/singer!...What happened was that the industry wasn't accustomed in crediting back up voices or the use of back up voices as lead voices...and that was all about what happened in Martha's case if you inform yourself up closely...plus, that was a side project and they weren't expecting such degree of success...due mostly to Martha's voice...so...it was fair enough for her to claim all her rights...

Guys, Media lies and people can act on TV… FACT: Martha WASH was absolutely asked to be in the group directly by Robert Clivilles and David Cole, she wasn't surprised in any way when she heard Seduction, Black Box or C&C on the radio. Seduction was released in 1989, no lawsuit ever took place, and Martha kept working with my Dad and David and recorded "Gonna make you Sweat" as a real song 4 years later, not a demo? You really think Martha Wash should still be surpriced recording almost 5 years in a row from 1989 to end of 1991 songs coming out with her singing and someone else doing the music videos? Seriously? You guys are gonna fall for that? My Dad never made Demos, he created records on the spot. It's simple, Milli Vanilli came out the closet in public, then Paula Abdul, then someone whispered "Payday" and you will be finally recognized with a controversy in Martha's ear. All these singers were singing and letting whoever front bands back then, it was common. My Dad and David would of gladly had Martha on the whole first and second C&C Album, she decided not to be in the band as Freedom stated. It was in poor taste that Freedom made the other statement. Martha is a great talent and went on to sing more dance records. But do not ever dismiss who the "real talent" is... You can be a great singer, but if there ain't no hit song created, there's no need for a great singer :-) The real talent was my Dad Robert Clivilles and uncle David Cole, they created, wrote, arranged and produced all the C&C Music Factory Albums and went on to write, arrange and produce: Mariah"s Emotions album and her next album after that, Aretha Franklin "Pride a Deeper Love", Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston on the Body Guard Album, Lisa Lisa, Natalie Cole, Busta Rhymes, James Brown etc..etc..etc.. to many hits and to many artists to even list, together they sold 200 million albums and 50 million singles that continue playing all around the world….

Amazing footage you have there!. In C&C's defense, they weren't expecting "Sweat" to explode the way it did, but they should've ponied up when the money came. She did the work....it's HER voice. She was told by C&C that Sweat was for demo purposes only, so she should've been told that the RCA wanted to release it as the C&C's first single, and been compensated. Too bad she had to sue them to force them to do the right thing, but she got hers.

Martha Wash is the best R&B singer ever. It makes me so mad that her vocals were used in music videos, but instead enlisted these non-singing, non-tune-carrying models to lip-synch off her (Black Box's Katrin Quinol can't even sing professionally, as she's just a fashion model, and Zelma Davis really can't sing at all, as she's proven when she was on a previous segment of "Showtime at the Apollo"). Martha should've been in the music videos, not those 2.

The difference is Zelma Davis actually sang and was an actual member in the C&C Music Factory. The thing is this is not the first time Wash had done a song with C&C and had her vocals fronted. The first Seduction hit "True Love" was sung entirely by her and the actual girl group that was later formed that bore the name were lip synching to her vocals. I think the reason for the lawsuit was she felt the Milli Vanilli scandal was an opportunity for her for vindication and to cash in.

They treated Martha like a wash rag and tossed her aside. I was an audio engineer at Sony Studios and the shit you hear producers and record executives say in the studio, would just floor anyone today. Back then they would make fun of people like Martha, because back then if you were fat no label would sign you. Back then they used to make lots of jokes as soon as the fat artist left the studio after doing their job they were hired to do. And the fat jokes came in for hours. You would be very hard pressed if you were fat to get signed to a label. Most of those fat girls like Martha used to be used only for what they call "Studio Sessions" Back then they pay you between $1,000 to $5,000 to come in and sing the song and someone else came in and do a Millie Vanillie shit on you. Happened so many times that it became the norm back then..... --- Its really sad that I got to experience that in my entire as an Studio Audio Engineer. After 4½ decades as an audio engineer I'm glad shit like that is no longer the norm. Though some labels still are in their old ways..... But now that people can release their own songs, they don't have to deal with that shit anymore.....

Martha was just born in the wrong generation where a small size was taught to be beautiful, times are changing now, it's not completely changed, but size doesn't matter anymore as much as it used to, look at Adele? Plus size girl who had an album certified DIAMOND. People back in the early 90s were greedy and selfish asses

This all could've been solved with a contract explicitly stating that Martha would be paid as a lead vocalist for one song. If they didn't want to pay royalties, the contract should've said that she'd also be paid as a session musician/ singer.

That's how things work since and nowdays, but it wasn't like that back then...BUT things could've been easily solved by putting Martha in those videos and crediting her...and they didn't have to show her whole body for that matter...if you're a creative video director you'll find solutions for eventual issues...

Crazy how people care more about the image... do they listen to music with their eyes? Sadly David Cole said that the song could have had anyone else's voice and it would have been a hit. Ok, then rerecord it. Even if it becomes a hit, its because of the VOICE. Not because of the visuals that came after

Wouldn't it be far more exciting as an audience member to see the person actually singing the song sing it live? Elton John said something similar to wanting a refund if you pay to see a live show and the person lip syncs. Amplify that about double in this case.

I hate what they did to Martha they just use her voice but don't paid her a fair amount (she did all the singing while the model did is just lip syncing and looked pretty). I feel that what they did was fucked up but I could understand why they did it. In the music industry sex sells more than talent does so yeah there is going to use someone that look like a model over someone that is plus size in videos esp. in dance videos.

Not sure why they used the white girl in the video.

Zelma could sing this song great. There's lot of disrespect towards her, but remember: She didn't have anything to do with Martha not staying with the group, and she also sang several other songs on that album, AND she could do Martha's vocals live just fine...in addition to dancing all over the place. The girl is super talented. The only lip syncing she did on this song was on the video, and even the original singers lip sync videos. So what? Martha got paid for this performance. Might not have been a load of money, but you're talking a brand new group nobody had ever heard of on their first album. Nobody knew if it would even sell or not. And she AGREED to the amount, probably thinking it's just another job in the studio, and this one just happened to be a hit. She only had a problem with it after it became a hit. I guarantee you if this hadn't been a hit, you'd have never heard a word from her. And y'all can say Martha's voice made that song....it helped, but the video helped make it, too because video was huge back then, and Zelma helped sell the video. So both contributed. In fact, I'd say the song's popularity helped Marth as much or more than she helped that one song.

Zelma does have an amazing singing voice but it isn’t as impactful or soulful as Martha’s and it is a shame that people think that Zelma couldn’t sing at all when that wasn’t the case. The Black Box model couldn’t speak English which is why we never her her sing or speak.

There is no lawsuit for lying to the public... (there should be probably) LOL the attorney is ridiculous... sorry, if you sign a studio performer agreement you are bound by it. Same as actors sign release forms to the producers. There is not a single fact that creates a cause of action. Don't do studio sessions if you're gonna complain later. However, the fake singer can't win the award for vocals unless they did them.
