Here's a tip on this game. Evasive skills like super explosive wave and moves like it can cancel a good amount of enemy ultimate moves if it's a one hit ultimate move that is. Like a special beam Canon, a kamehameha and etc. There are ultimate moves that consist of multiple hits and using an evasive skill will only cancel the damage of a couple of those hits. But it can be good to not only cancel the enemies ultimate damage but it can leave the enemy open to be stamina broken.

I'd recommend that he starts with the Ultra Packs 1 & 2 DLC. Along with the powerful additional characters, it also comes with very useful skills, equipment, and super souls. Plus in Ultra Pack 1 you can get Krillin's super soul "Power! A lotta power! It's great!" which gives you maximum ki and stamina (and all you have to do to get it is defeat Krillin in that PQ after some certain dialogue, or defeat Androids 17 & 18 first).
