The town of Rhyolite began in 1905 as a mining camp after gold was discovered in the surrounding hills. The town grew for five years until the gold ran out. By 1919 it was a deserted ghost town. The last person living there died in 1924. Today the Cook Bank, school house, railway station and a few other buildings remain. As well as the bottle house. In 1907 almost 4000 people called it home. It once had 53 saloons, three hospitals, an opera and three newspapers. As well as 3 railway lines. Today around ten buildings remain.
