I know this video is pretty old, but I think it's really important, especially for newbies like me. I've been playing acoustic guitar for 30 years, and only just started electric guitar last year. String muting is one of the most vital techniques to master (I am still struggling with it), especially for playing rhythm guitar, yet it (and rhythm guitar for that matter) hardly gets any attention. So, thanks, Marty!

Hi Marty, I know this is a pretty old video but I was trawling through trying to find good string muting instruction… Great lesson. I just wanted to say, did you realise that when you’re playing on the D string with your index and pinky, that your middle two fingers are bouncing up and down on the A string to mute it as well? Just a thought, thanks mate.

In my experience what you taught was good however more detail and alternate angles and closeups would benefit the lesson greatly Marty. This skill is one that in my experience requires MUCH DELIBERATE FOCUS AND DETAIL by the instructor and many on the LEARNING end find this aspect of skill building very frustrating!!! Thank you!😁
@stephenmcconnell78686 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. I have tons of your old video courses, but they didn't cover this. As I move from acoustic to electric guitar (I have become a DeadHead) and trying to play like Bob Weir, I find that when I dig in to rhythm unwanted strings ring out.... (My acoustic playing doesn't do that). These techniques solve SO many problems I'm having in my transition. I am really having trouble with Triads on the 2,3 & 4 strings. Muting the strings above and muting the 1 string. Lots of work to do.

It would be MOST BENEFICIAL if we could see WHEN AND WHERE your right and left hand fingers and palm areas were ACTUALLY TOUCHING THE STRINGS AS WELL AS RIGHT HAND PLACEMENT ON THE FRETBOARD. This skill is as difficult one to develop and VERY FRUSTRATING for many trying to learn it. Any chance of another such video covering the afore mentioned???

FYI, something I recent learned is that a lower action makes it much harder to mute effectively. You end up accidentally fretting strings. Higher action makes it much easier.
