Rhythm of the Winds
By Frank Erickson
Item: 00-BD00366
Series: Belwin Classic Band
Category: Concert Band
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Level: 4
What a great interplay of rhythms! History will remember this work as one of the most played concert and contest pieces of all time. The alternation of two rhythms---one syncopated and the other an after-beat pattern---form the rhythmic foundation for the work’s theme. This rhythmic pattern has become a staple for many contemporary band compositions. It’s just as classy as it is classic! (5:15)

I had a substitute teacher who looked at this music and laughed. Apparently he used to play this when he was in school and at all the festivals, Frank Erickson would actually come and listened to his own music:D

So when I was in my junior year of high school (2022) we had county band. And I come from a school with a very small band, so being in a room of 200 kids and having every instrument imaginable, we opened up with this song and when I tell you I shed a tear at how beautifully my ears were serenaded that day🥲

Played this when in ninth grade along with Erickson's magnum opus, Blue Ridge Overture. Good memories from a horn in F player.... Edit: Star Wars section.... I remember thinking that when we played it, but this piece was composed in 1964..... Maybe it's Star Wars that has a Rhythm of the Winds section.....

This piece was my first concert piece for the very first concert I played in junior high school in 1966. I have loved it ever since and am genuinely shocked, surprised and totally delighted that it still exists!!! I'm going to try and get my concert bandmaster to buy it or I'll buy it myself, and see if I could get him to play it as a light piece in one of our concerts.

my high school band played this for a national competition though at the time our teacher thought it was a low level 3 we were preforming at level 2 so the judges were fairly impressed with the fact that it was somewhat coherent for context our other pieces were rhythm stand and suite for a band of players, so a fair bit more complicated.

I remember this being popular for Junior high band competitions back in the 80's Not sure ..grade 4 means what? I thought that grade 5 was like larger higher school level for adjudicated events Which makes me think I dont know the grading system they are using here calling this a grade 4
@dantepatterson6496

@@dantepatterson6496 I am not familiar with this grading system. I am more familiar with say the UIL grading system used in say Texas schools where you have class C and then it moves up by 1, 2, 3,4 ,5...with 5 being larger high school and with works like American Overture for Band, Psalm for Band...but also including more " college" level works such as the Pines Of Rome, Till Eulenspiegel Back in the day , when I was in high school,there was a level 6 that included the latter works I mentioned
