For anyone who hasn't seen the stick height system for dynamics, I'd like to clear something up. The numbers are in reference to an outdated system that is meant to represent how high the bead of the stick comes up from the drum when playing at a given dynamic. The problem with this system is that a marching snare stick is usually 17" long, so how can the loudest dynamic only be 15"? EMC goes over this at 9:53 in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/inWTaJeAd9SNapY and mentions that a more accurate way of describing what's actually happening would be to make use of angle measurements. However, the old stick height system is a lot easier to remember and teach, which is why it is still in use. TL;DR: Don't take the notated stick heights so literally! They are from an old system and simply refer to dynamics without using traditional dynamic markings. 1/2" or 1" - pp 3" - p 6" - mp 9" - mf 12" - f 15" - ff

I switched just over a year ago to purely mention dynamic heights to my students. I agree with all of your points here, and I definitely love the degree angle points.

15" isn't the highest dynamic level, its just the upper limit of where the height system is useful. Once you're above 12" the dynamics become less reliant on specific heights, and more determined by how much arm and power you're using. It's archaic, but defining things as 3" or 6" or 9" or 12" is still effective in my opinion. It's easy for students to understand and visualize, most importantly.

I like the dynamics, they’re a little bit easier to understand for newer drummers.
