Hi, Ian! This is common practice for a levels of Pipe Band drum corps to help them play better together. There's no drill or marching in Pipe Band competition, so they take advantage by always looking at the Lead Tip. Pipers will do the same by always looking at the hands of the Pipe Major. It's a great way to stay focused and add that extra layer of precision. What style of drumming do you play?:)
