Yeah I’d definitely take the American gun for half the price and feel much more confident about it’s reliability and life frame. Though this thing does have a aesthetic cool factor. I’ve got a Mossberg 535 that doesn’t have much use to me anymore...but it’s hard to actually put up for sale. I’d love to “tac” it out, but it kinda seems silly to add an extended tube, ATI folder and/or new barrel that would cost as much as I paid for the gun itself.

Looks a lot like the old model 37 Ithaca riotgun that for years was the standard for many police departments among them the LAPD in fact it was marketed as the LAPD model. When Ithaca went out of business, most departments switched to the Remington 870, or the Winchester 1300.

Remington already had the vast majority of the business when Ithaca went under, LAPD was an anomaly. LA was also still using round nose lead .38's, long after many/most agencies had gone to hollow points. Other than Metro or SIS, they were not an agency to emulate when it came to firearms in those days.

In Single Action Cowboy shooting, the rules allow for the 1897 Winchester. The pump had to be loaded one round at a time through the breach. This was designed to allow for side by side coach style guns to remain competitive. Alot of the “practically free” trench guns people are referring to in the comments here were snapped up by Cowboy shooters until they were expensive, and then along came the reproductions.

I shot a 97 in cowboy action shooting. It is significantly faster than sxs shotguns when going for more than 2 targets. Mine was made in 1908 of I remember correctly. It was tuned by a high-end gunsmith and ran flawlessly. I would grab 4 shells in my right hand (I am left-handed) drop one in the chamber, close the chamber, fire, pump back, load again, repeat. It was a good system for me. I won a few county classes with that gun and miss it.

Slam fire isn’t useless it’s just 99% of pump guns have a disconnect that nobody has the skill to slam fire anymore and just go to semi auto guns instead. Much like fanning a revolver it has become a style of fast shooting no longer practical because of safety and semi auto technology.

Man I'm bummed out by the lack of a bayonet lug, but this is still pretty cool! I don't think the Inland Manufacturing M37 Trench Shotguns are still available, but those were $1,000+ anyway. And creating a replica from a base Ithaca 37 would likely cost more than this Rock Island clone is out the door. It seems to be a nice option for someone that would have fun hunting or target shooting with a "Trench Gun" that they won't feel bad about scratching or getting dirty.

$390? Great price. RIA should not miss the opportunity to offer this gun with a 25-26" plain (no vent rib) sporting barrel with interchangeable choke tubes. I have an older, original Ithaca 37 with 2 barrels, both serial numbered to the gun (there were no interchangeable barrels at that time, barrels had to be factory fitted) They ARE incredibly smooth and fast to operate. I also own some Winchester model 12s (6) and Remington 870s (2) and the Ithaca is far ahead of either of them in smooth, fast operation. The Ithaca, IMO, is one gun that looks better without a vent rib. Turkish guns always have that beautiful Circassian (Turkish) walnut. The malfunction of the bolt release I would write off to a rough finish that should wear in. Not great, but if it disappears, nothing to worry about. Hard to tell because of the cerakote finish, but is the receiver steel? Or is it aluminum? The Ithaca design really needs a steel receiver since the bolt does not lock into a barrel extension like a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. It locks into a recess in the top of the receiver. Also the bolt rides on a carrier in cuts inside the receiver, not on "action bars" like the Remington or Mossberg. In the Ithaca design the receiver is a functional part of the gun that is subject to wear. Ithaca themselves offered an aluminum frame Model 37 called the "Super Featherlite" which didn't fare too well because of wear on the receiver. Interesting. I'll check them out. Thanks for the video.

Great review! I wonder how it compares to the Winchester SXP Trench gun, im on the fence right now..

I own two winchesters. The old 1300 and the SXP 24” stick model. The action is the same. Trigger pull is crisp. Accurate. Shoots cheap shells as well as the top shelf stuff with no issue. The slide assist helps with rapid fire. The alloy frame makes it nice and light to lug around. All in all the SXP is a good bang for your buck and I put it against a Mossberg or Remington any day. This one I haven’t fired but I own an Ithaca 87 I bought years back. Old, dented, worn off bluing, chucks of stock and fore end missing, and using a 37 barrel in place of the 87. In that horrific condition I paid $200 and I’ve shot that thing with no issues whatsoever. No jams, no misfires, no failure to eject, no frozen slide, absolutely nothing went wrong with that gun. So if a beat out Ithaca that’s been kicked around since the 80’s can manage to shoot under those conditions, my gut tells me that this model should function just fine. And given Turkey’s cult like following of shotgun sports and production of weapons, I’d say this would be worth a try. But if you want something modern, light, fast shooting and reliable I’d go with the SXP purely for the cost savings and the availability of replacement parts as well as ease of maintenance and field stripping. Hope that helps.

Honestly if Rock Island wanted to make a repo. Then add the signature bayonet lug and have it with a slam fire option

John Browning designed it after he designed the model 12. He thought the 12 ejecting empties across the face of the left handed shooter was bad. So he designed this shotgun to eject out the bottom. Oliver Winchester didn't like it. So they sold the rights to Remington, they produced it in 20 gauge only. It was the model 17. (1917) Remington sold it to Ithaca, they produced it in (1937). I'm thinking the trench guns were slam fire too. If I remember correctly...

That's already my next shotgun I'm working on raising the money to buy, it I want it, I used to have a Chinese knockoff of the model 37 and it was light weight and well-balanced. Definitely like the gun, hope it takes 3 inch but I'll settle for two and three quarter. Hopefully it'll take mini shells too.😂

Not to be a fanboy. I hunted with a Harrison & Richardson bolt as action.410. 1st dove. Next season new old model 37 feather light. It slam fired.. was newer than my father's. Long story out of business baut store eastern NC. I don't say it's the best but I have never ever shot a finer shotgun. No M4. NoA5 no old 1100.

I'd say it's more of an 870 in drag as a 1897. The 1897 is WAY better looking imo, but that's exactly what it is...My Opinion, everyone else is entitled to theirs as well. I think the Boomstick doesn't get enough credit now days as a Viable Defense weapon. With the Right guy behind one that knows how to Maximize it's strong points, it's Very Formidable and Devastating.

Same, still waiting for a cimarron 1897 but I did get a chance to buy one of these and they are amazing. It a pump shotgun so not much can go wrong and I even compare it to my ithica model 37 featherlight and it pretty much the same. Not sure why they call it a tpas t1897 but management really need to correct it also panzer arms makes the exact copy for less money.

The only bad thing about this shotgun is it doesn't have a bayonet lug which the Ithaca did have, it would add to the "Trench Gun" aspect. Nice shotty though.
