Decent enough list. Your reasoning for the double barrel was very good, especially when it comes to turkey and other fowl. No mess with having to restrict your magazine. If I’m on the stalk, I usually don’t carry a long gun at all as I prefer my bow. Center fire bolt guns are a great option for a seasoned hunter with the skill and patience to wait for the right shot. And something like a 700 is not overly pricey. Myself, I do like a semiautomatic, mainly because of familiarity. Oh, and breakdown to bolt is as fast for AR-style platforms with someone who is skilled. Ruger 10/22 both in choice of platform and ammo type is absolutely bulletproof!

A tin of .177 of 500 pellets cost about $10 more or less . While a brick of 22lr is about $50 more or less . Something to keep in mind is caliber restrictions in some states. Though the 308W is not as capable with heavy bullets as the 30-06 it is almost as good and there is a lot to be said for ammo availability. The 22 is something everyone should have. I am a lever action kind of guy (22 and centerfire) but cost wise the semi makes a lot of sense. Of course one should also consider handguns as they are the always with you option.

Your statement is the “300 win mag hits a lot harder than a 30-06 will” and there definitely is an edge. It is exactly the same edge that a 30-06 has over a 308. Those two are not the same. I have basically shot everything in North America and would not take a 308 (which I have 2) on anything other than Easter whitetails. Your comments regarding a double barrel shotgun are spot on.
@locacarnivore9004 ай бұрын
I'd say the .300 Wm has a bit more margin over the '06 than the '06 has over the .308. '06 gives 100 fps more per bullet weight than the .308. Whereas the WM, for instance, launches a 180 grain at 2950+fps compared to the '06 at 2700 fps. Difference on target is substantially greater than the mere math would suggest, based on my observations in the field. Wounds are more akin to a .375 H&H. Thanks for watching.
@troywesterbur7064 ай бұрын
I got news for you. There is nothing in North America that you can’t harvest with a 308. A 308 and a 30/06 have almost the exact same ballistics. In fact I will tell you that there is nothing that you can’t harvest with a 30/30. To me the 308 has far more advantages over the 06 because of ammo choice plus being a short action. The 308 will go all the way down into varmint rounds. Plus the short action allows a smaller rifle allowing you to hunt back country more comfortably. Both are excellent choices but ballistics of a 270 is better than both and has less recoil. 300 win is cool but if you are going for a magnum why not step up to the Weatherby. But if I was to choose just one it’s the 308 for versatility. Then the 06 as a close second.

Arguing over which is better. 30-06, 308, or even 7.62x54R Is pointless and pure user preferences I will take any of them. They are the same. The only difference is the physical size of the brass. And the 308 is a automatic round. Meaning it's not rimmed and fires better in something automatic. However all three do just fine in full auto. The bullet/ projectile is the same. And all three can be made ( reloaded) to fire the same . Surprisingly in most 30/30 you can load them and fire fine with 30/06 ballistics. So if you want you can add 30/30 to that group. Again it also uses the same projectile. Though a 30/30 it's self is like a Sks or ak47. That being a 7.62x39 . Which again takes the same projectile. You could load them like a 30-06 also. But it best to use a 7.62x39 and 30/30 as they are. The only one that does not and can not equal a 30-06 is a 30 carbine. Which again used the same projectile. But it's power is less then a 22lr. I know them 30 carbines don't like the truth. They are like a guy wearing a Son of Anchary vest pretending he is a 1% biker. But in truth is just a beach. So in short. It personal preference. But hey. If you want to give me one. I will take any. I will even take a 30 carbine. I need a reload able plinker. And I have a mild for.30 cal Btw. Not to be confused with the 303 which for some reason unlike the other that all use .308 projectile/ 7.62. The 303 brit uses a .311 projectile. Now I can not say for sure but I think I recall that the malzier 8 mm uses the same projectile. But you need to verify that. Btw. Just so you know. The original 30-06 . Which was made for the M1903. Was less powerful than a .308 for the AR-10. The predaceser to the AR 15 / M16. NOTE. EVEN though the AR-10 was made prior to the AR-15 it was turned down. And the M14 was choice because it was like the M1 . Myself I like the mechanics of the ARs over the M1 Just use the rifle you like. Again I would take a 30-06, 308 or 7.62x54R any time. I've own all three and thier isn't anything in the Americas that they won't kill. Mind you id rather have a .308 or a BAR when going against the big ones . Because they fire faster. But by far id rather have a 30-06 or 7.62x 54R bolt action then a .22lr against the big ones . Can a .22lr kill the big ones. Sure. But I don't want to be the fool that does it. Now if you were to use a 22lr. Don't bother with a head shot. Go right for the heart. It's your best chance. Because I've seen 500 lbs hogs that a .223 didn't go through the skull. And a 223 is a lot more powerful then a 22lr. It's not matter of missing at point plank . Those were mad piggies each time. But the worse I've seen was a Japanese little 7mm palm gun. On a 300 lbs sow. I think it was 8 rounds. And the worse it did was put a hairline crack and made it disorientated enough to slit it throut. That was fun. Oh and stupid I will add. At least the 500 lbs boar I hit with the .223. when I picked my jaw up a second later. I ran in and got a 30-06. He was not happy at all. But the 06 did the job great. Anyhow my point is a bear skull and a hog skull are the same. So don't bother with a head shot with anything then the .308 family with the big ones. Just do a heart shot and move. Because there is a high chance that it's coming for you and you need it to pump that blood out before it gets to you. Ok now for some insane stuff. That goes for a shepard sling as well. But with it. You want to break the ribs above the heart. And you want it to move a lot. So it puts that broken rib into its own heart. The other option but less effective. Is a hind leg break Either way expect to run as fast as you can for over mile. The goal is to be faster then what is chasing you. And faster then the slowest friend. Lol. Btw. Yes a 300 win mag is a better choice. But you are wrong on the 30-06 and .308. I am guessing but you don't reload do you? You are just going off brass size and recoil. No question a .300 win mag is above the others. Even reloading. Though you could load a 300 win mag lighter to equal them. And technically you could load them hot to equal a 300 win mag. But why? If you want that . Just buy a 300 win mag and save wear on your rifle. Now like I said I agree a 300 win mag is hotter. But I've never owned a 300 win mag. I never needed one If you really want to go big or go home. The just send a school bus. .50 BMG I have fired that a bit. And there ain't nothing breathing on earth that a .50 BMG WON'T DROP That like saying my Brown Bess. If that .76 cal hits you. You butt is hitting the ground. Not say you are dead . But something is missing Like a BMG it takes arms off it takes legs off. Yes for 3 east payment of 39.95 . It slices it dices order today... . 50 BMG I'm hoping you don't see me. But I'm running for at least 5 miles. Most anything else I will just stay down . But when ma bell talks . I'm not taking that call . I've hit too many things with a Ma Duece. On the other hand I'm also not got to carry a . 50 BMG HEY if you like the 300 win mag. 👍 I would be happy with a 30-06, 308 , or a 7.62 x54R. At one time or another I've had each. And if I had a choice. Id take a M1903 or a ( the Russian WWI and WWII service rifle) . Yes even over the M1 .I just didn't like the Garnd or however it's called. I know it's a good rifle. I just didn't like mine. I wish I never sold my M1903 or Russian rifle. I like the fell of both. But liked the M1903 A slight bit more. Can beat the iron sights of a US military rifle since at least the M1903. anyone know if the Krag had the adjustable peep sights like the M1903 . OR when the US started using the adjustable peep sights? Like to fire Krag some day. I didn't think of it . What did the sharps and Spencer use for sights?

I bought a bolt action gun in 1980. Within 24 hours, the bolt got locked up and couldn't move it. I traded it back in on a lever action and that is the only lever action I ever had. I have never had another bolt action gun. I've had three Mossberg 500 pumps and a 590. I've had five 22lr rifles and three Mini-14's, a Mini-30, a Remington 742 in 3006, a CETME 308 and other great guns, a few in Stainless Steel.

Okay. First off, I am 75 yrs. old and have hunted wild game for 65 yrs. I agree with your choice of a shotgun, but disagree with the double barrel. I have had my Remington 870 Wingmaster .12 ga. since I bought it new in 76. Never failed me in any respect. I might also add that you brought up the noise factor of a pump when "sneaking up" on a deer. Unless you are EXTREMELY good at stalking, you are not going to sneak up on a deer. You may be able to get within range without being a professional, but never in my life have I frightened a deer off due to the rattle of the pump shotguns slide action noise. I agree with a good bolt action rifle and also agree that a .308 would be my go to caliber. I also agree with the .22 LR. I use my Ruger 10/22 more than any firearm I own here on the homestead. Lastly, 3 firearms just wont really do the trick for me. There has to be handgun in the mix. My choice would be a good .357 magnum revolver. Low maintenance, less chance of malfunction, and capable of using .357 or .38 Special ammo.

Great choices Sir. My choices are below. 1. Henry All Weather Lever Action chambered in 45-70 for Mountain Lions, Wolves, or Grizzly Bears OH MY 😂. 2. Glock 20 semi automatic pistol chambered in 10 mm as a backup for the Henry against the same predators. 3. Henry Long Ranger lever action rifle chambered in .308 with an Optic for Deer, Elk,and Moose. 4. I have an old semiautomatic Marlin chambered for .22 short, long, and magnum for small game and rodents. 5. Ruger Mini 14 Tactical chambered in 5.56 for home and self defense. 6. The backup for the mini 14 is the Glock 17 Gen 4 chambered in 9mm. 7. Remington Field Master Super Mag 12 gauge shotgun for hunting water fowl and other birds. 8. My every day carry is a Ruger LCR snub nose revolver chambered in .38 special +p loaded with Buffalo Bore 158 grain lead SWCHPs. This is my list that covers all my needs. What’s yours?

a 16 oz, 6" single stack 9mm looks like a waller in your pocket. Load it with 3 ozs of the 50 gr, 2000 fps, solid copper, 450 ft lbs Liberty arms solid copper hp, which has no more recoil thaan a hot 380 load which has at most half the power of the 9mm load. An 18 oz, S&W 2214 pocket .22lr has great sights and trigger. At 3 ozs of aluminum silencer, 1 oz of 22 ammo and the total for both guns and their ammo is 40 ozs. A Browning , CZ,, or other steel framed double stack 9mm weighs more and offers much less versatility around the farm. The 22 can reliably hit starlings at 20m. or chucks to 50m. Yes, he'll go down his hole to die, but then you get the shovel, dig him out and have 7 lbs of fatty meat. That chuck wont be eating any more of your garden.

. 300 win mag or 30-06 covers most large game, .22lr small game spruce chicken, squirrel, tarmgon and is a great trainer for kids, 12 guage, water fowl, and side arm, .44 mag/.40 cal. But as usual it is all subjective..
@johnkelleher82304 ай бұрын
The main thing to think about is where you live out west yea the 300 win mag or the 30-06 back east the 30-30 is a better choice for pine forest and brush same with shotguns in the open go sidexside or over-under in heavy forest semi-auto or pump is better and just about any 22 will work

I have 5 guns. I like the idea of handgun and rifle that use to same ammo. 3, 22 RF, a bolt, 581s, a auto 10/22, "Inter" , a revolver, 8 shot, 4 inch barrel. To step it up a bit, I reach for my 357's, I hand load for the 357. 5 shot revolver, 4 inch barrel. Rifle in 357, 22 inch barrel, single shot, break action, scoped with a 3x9x40. With my 22's I'll never go hungry. For bigger game the 357 rifle works real well. So far, 2 Deer, one at 60 yards and one at 70 yards. One boar hog at 30 feet. All were with ONE shot.

The only caveat I would throw in is terrain and vegetation. These will affect yardages that you can fire. I live down the in South Texas, in the brush country. You have to see it to understand it. Sure, Texas is flat, right? Sort of, in places. On my ranch, brush grows everywhere. I have made improvements over time to remove a lot, BUT, areas I have cleared as recently as five years ago, need upkeep now again. It is a war against the brush and cactus (prickly pear, which makes a fine jelly for me every year). The terrain goes up gradually in places, then back down lower. I checked google earth and examined the ranch. My longest shot possible is about 125 to 135 yards. In many places, from where you are to where deer or hogs might be that you can see is in that range. They could be five yards further, and the elevation and or brush changes, now they are shielded. Match your centerfire rife to the game and your average distances, but you know that. I use a 30-30 Henry with a Vortex 2-7 scope a lot. I handload so I use LeverRevolution powder, and a Hornady RN and it is all I need for where I am. That load is a fine pig thumper. It dumps its energy in the animal. As for a 22LR and a shotgun, yes! Every farm and ranch should have these. I have a chicken fortress (I do not lose chickens at night any more. I let them out to eat bugs during the day, that is when I will sometimes lose one.) the varmints always want to try to enter at night. The 22LR handles that (yes, magnification and a light help). I have HD shotguns, a squirrel/rabbit shotgun, and a turkey gun. My biggest threat animals out here are illegals and rattle snakes. I carry a G19 and two extra mags ALL the time now. (we have had incidents!) Excellent topic! I agree, if the distances are not far AND you do not have bears, a 308 is easy recoil, ammo is easy to find if you do not reload, and you will not burn out the barrel. Everyone be safe out there and God bless.

I cannot argue with this gentleman’s recommendations. Proper categories for certain, and since everyone else is sharing their firearms, I might as well add my firearms, antiquarian as they may be….. #1 Krag Jorgensen M1898 rifle in 30-40 Krag. #2 20 gauge bird gun. #3 Colt M1892 revolver in 38 Long (I like a 6” barrel revolver over a .22 cal rifle, but that’s not a recommendation. Pistol craft takes A LOT of effort to become proficient; it’s just my preference). So why all the antique guns in obsolete calibers? I’m old, I trust them because they are robust and I am proficient in their use, and I “turned the clock back” a long time ago. Happy hunting friends. 🇺🇸

You left out handguns, The noisy way to bowhunt. A freedom arms or ruger 454 casull 4.5/8 barrel can always be on you. The handload er can load that 454 case with cowboy shooting trail blazer powder Down to 800 fps. That 454 will also shoot 45 long colt, A 460 s w , Could also work, But now there is hearing damage possibilities. In addition to a larger size gun. A 480 ruger alaskan 2.5 barrel fits everywhere. It may seem to be a chunky monkey at first, But with the right holster like a triple k hunter it carries flat against the side. When not in your chest holster, I actually like the 480 ruger 9.5 ballance feel better, But that requires a triple k torso rig. Great for, 🐎/ four wheeler, But rubs on the steering wheel. The 480 ruger with longer barrels 9.5 ,,,memics the 1873 45 70 military rifles, With less recoil then full 454 casull, Plus, for entertainment value,, it can be loaded with hard white rice, like a shot gun for flies.... The most powerfull 480 ruger loads are the lower end of the 500 linebaugh. Buy your 480 ruger brass in large quantities when u see it, starline.... With careful reloading and at 1100 fps cases should last over 8 times The same can be said for the 500 linebaugh, That is just a more expensive way to go, A kimber k6s 4inch target or combat model on the front left hip can be a nice alternative when bison 🦬 size animals aren't around to be penitrated. Look up Ron Spomer outdoors channel interview with phill shoemaker.

1. A .22 rifle. 2. A 12 ga. pump shotgun with interchangeable chokes. 3. A heavy rifle that will drop the biggest game in your area. That means a 30.06, which will drop anything on the NA continent. Good to have. A heavy pistol for close self defense. An AR-15 platform with the current military round. For defense against the government.

interesting take on guns for average person 👍 learned a few things even though I don't hunt and have little or no experience with guns I have had some exposure to them and ammo simply because you may need to use one for whatever ( probably self defense) reason I like your choices thums up 👍 probably 306 bolt action ( no scope ) would be only gun I would need if had to choose simple enough to handle not too powerful to shoot but leathal enough

I have a few rifles shotguns and handguns that would fit the bill . For the sake of argument for the center fire rifle I like my Remington model 7 in 308 it tends to be very accurate with Remington core lock ammo. For the shotgun I have Bikal Russian made over and under in 20 gauge with interchangeable choke tunes, and of course I would need a good 22 long rifle I have several good Ruger rifles in 22 caliber one bolt action and 2 semi automatics ,I also have a Smith and Wesson revolver in 22 long rifle that would provide a great option in a survival situation

Decent info. The only thing I would add is that I would have made it 4 guns instead of 3 and made the forth a handgun. Some kind of ultra reliable 9mm such as the Glock 19 would be a great choice.
